2007 is already the clear, clear winner

Just got offed, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

My lists of Top 50 albums of each year tell me 2002 was best, followed by 2005 and 2001.

As for the quality of mainstream music, it would be 2003 or 2004.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Need listing people.

acrobat, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

2001

Love and Theft, White Blood Cells, Know Your Enemy, Southern Rock Opera, Is This It?, The Argument, Gold, the list goes on.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

My intuitive-impulsive pick is 2003.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

For one thing, Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

2001 for me

bjork/vespertine
daft punk/discovery
fugazi/the argument
ted leo/the tyranny of distance
low/things we lost in the fire
mogwai/rock action
my morning jacket/at dawn
pulp/we love life
radiohead/amnesiac
spiritualized/let it come down
spoon/girls can tell
white stripes/white blood cells

that looks to me like a fucking best-of-career list for most (if not all) of these guys, with arguable exceptions of course, but those are all in the running for best-of-career albums...

stephen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

I doubt I'll vote...too difficult. 2006 has the best album, but I don't think it's the strongest year. I remember 2004 being good, I think?

Tape Store, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 06:35 (eighteen years ago)

i voted '05. three of my fave records this decade, Tha Carter II, Silent Alarm and Apologies to the Queen Mary, plus a great Maximo Park record and Illinois which i like a lot. plus the reemergence of Clipse.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

Tape Store, what's the best album from 2006 that you mention?

I'm tempted to go for this year.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

i'm terrible at recalling in what year a particular record came out in

that said, 2000 brought us lift your skinny fist, sigur ros' finest, kid a, my fave dirty three, moon and antarctica, lost souls, mass romantic...

2001 hmmm... low, daft punk, les savy fav, the strokes, opeth, basement jaxx, the microphones, especially fugazi had outstanding releases

2002 you forgot it in people, yankee, thought for food, turn on the bright lights, source tags and codes, murray street, mclusky do dallas, they threw us all in a trench.., kill the moonlight, original pirate material

2003 gave us stunners from unicorns, cursive, the blood brothers, the wrens, m83, deerhoof, manitoba, the books (again)

2004...ah, misery is a butterfly, milk-eyed mender, sung tongs, abbatoir blues..., last exit, from a basement on the hill etc.

2005 was all about sunn o)) robyn, opeth, clap your hands, um...not a great year, for mine

2006 had, well, hot chip, scott walker, boris, katatonia, liars, yo la tengo return to form, and tv on the radio

2007, i haven't been paying a huge amount of attention to. but i like very much what blonde redhead, pig destroyer, spoon, okkervil river have done.

on the back of all that, i have to go with either 2002 or 2003. and i'm finding it really tough to pick those apart. i'm going to go with 2003, what the hey

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

actually the more i think about it, the better 2004 is sounding. 'you are the quarry' also came out that year.

i'd forgotten about 'hail to the thief' as well. another tick in the box for 2003.

also, 'shoso strip' is a winner from 2000 as well. damn, most of these years are pretty sharp.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

2001, 2002 and 2004 in retrospect look like purple patches, 2007 is shaping up very nicely indeed as well. 2000 and 2006 probably the worst.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

2005 - Kate Bush, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Metric, The Books, Broadcast, Girls Aloud, Charlotte Church...gets my vote!

2for25, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm loving 2007. seriously.

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

2000: Radiohead - Kid A, Björk - Selmasongs, Barbara Morgenstern - Fjorden

2001: Björk - Vespertine, Mouse on Mars - Idiology, Gotan Project - La revancha del tango, Radiohead - Amnesiac

2002: Asa-Chang & Jun Ray - Jun Ray Song Chang, Luciano - Live @ Weetamix ...

2003: Ellen Allien - Berlinette, Ricardo Villalobos - Alcachofa, Melt-Banana - Cell-Scape (+ great albums from AGF, Kevin Blechdom)

2004: Björk - Medúlla , Elliott Smith - Either/Or... hmmm

2005: Ellen Allien - Thrills, Matias Aguayo - Are You Really Lost, Kate Bush - Aerial, Cansei de Ser Sexy - CSS, Isolée - We Are Monster, TBA - Annulé (!) + fucking LOADS more I could have listed (Suckfish! Untilted! Awfully Deep! Hello Mom! Robyn!) not even inc. great albums from AGF, Kevin Blechdom (again)

2006: Scott Walker - The Drift, The Knife - Silent Shout, Ellen Allien & Apparat - Orchestra Of Bubbles, Skream & Kode 9 with the token (but still decent) Dubstep albums, outside of the few great record I found... I didn't feel like much interesting was going on :/ losing interest in 'minimal' big time (despite Kiki & Cassy's mix CDs thrilling me like nothing else in that vein since maybe 03/04

2007: that Marnie Stern album is fun... as is OLD MUSIC... kill me now, just can't be bothered anymore!

I want to give it to 2003 for pure excitement, but 2005 WAY better than I remembered or maybe my hunting instincts were just best then (and clearly had no purchasing self-control)... 2004 just as big a let-down as I remembered, 2006 not that bad after all, 2001 gets the bronze medal.

fandango, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Tape Store, what's the best album from 2006 that you mention?

FutureSex/LoveSounds

Tape Store, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

2007 is kicking all kinds of ass so far

pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

2006/7 has been pretty amazing as far as pop music is concerned.

Christyles, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

futuresex/lovesounds. that sounds suspiciously like a justin timberlake record

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

C'mon Charlie, this is ILM, the most pop-friendly music messageboard on the internet. If he can't say it here, where can he say it?

Just got offed, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

the most pop-friendly music messageboard on the internet.

ILX System, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

2001 people! who's with me?

stephen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

i used the site Acclaimed Music to help me remember.

i have to go with 2002, though 2004 and 2006 weren't too far behind. this has been a great decade for music, once again, with 2007 being a barn burner.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think I remember 2004 being great for music, but then that was the year I got broadband and was able to hear a lot more, so that might be skewed. Sung Tongs skews things too.

the next grozart, Thursday, 16 August 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

hahah, don't worry lads, i'm just having a dig. :) popfriendly is fine with me

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 16 August 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wait, they both suck

Preview of the Matrix 12, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get it either. 2007 has been almost totally worthless for music as far as i'm concerned

electricsound, Saturday, 18 August 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm currently hoping for the new HORSE the band to blow my mind (or at least interest me somewhat), which really says something, I think.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 18 August 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

Seems the R&B/hip-hop fans here made sure 2001 won.

Oh well, in terms of best albums, 2001 was not at all bad. I mean, if you ignore the crap that was actually popular that year...

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 18 August 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

2007 has had Justice and the Of Montreal album. The former is fine, the latter amazing. Apart from that, no I can't think of very much.
