Yes, it's totally fantastic cut-up madness. Apparently, Akufen has an album out next month. Make sure you check out his Quebec Nightclub single from late last year. Influenced by Todd Edwards and Herbert?

I like the way it never actually totally resolves itself; even the most straightforward moments sound totally unbalanced. Definitely a Todd Edwards feel to the track - basically Afuken has taken Edwards' superstructural elements (ie. the cut-up vocals) and made them the basis for the groove, which sounds simple but it's amazing how bizarre/great it sounds.

The album's coming out in three weeks' time!

JoB, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ACOUSTIC GUITAR sounds GRATE on the dancefloor! (am starting to think the Al Di Meola back catalogue = years of future hits)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Madonna's Don't Tell Me influencing the dance avant-garde...

JoB, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's great but the psychometry series on trapez (particularly vol 2 and 3) and quebec nightclub on perlon are even better. personally, i think he stomps all over todd edwards and makes 99% of house music sound jaded, dated and redundant.

stirmonster, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very indie somehow. I like it though.

Tom, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JoB yeah the guitar is actually used sort of similarly in "deck the house"; but but! also imagine hip-hop style nonverbal vocal cut-ins, clipped string swells, and about 30 other snips and snares building like a fugue. and before/after you're ready for it, when you are thoroughly discombobulated, a big cocky bass funk squidges into the room

six years pass...

At like 2:30 in the morning last night I, for no good reason at all, turned on my radio, gave the dial one big turn without even looking at it, and out of nowhere it landed perfectly (on a radio with shitty reception, nonetheless) on a this track (and the station played pretty much just really cheesy indie rock afterwards). I was impressed, at least.

Seriously though, wasn't there word his 2nd album was going to come out this year, anyone know what's doing with that?

yaaaaawn

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

The lack of "woah, Jesus is great!" bollocks makes Akufen way more palatable than Todd Edwards.

To begin with, I did think 'Todd Edwards rip-off’ but there’s something in some of Akufen’s work that just has so much fun and joy which surpases even Edwards, sure as:

"1re Tournee"

Akufen is also more able to use space in music, whereas Todd - as much as I love him - is relentlessly dense.

Plus he’s an awesome DJ. And took the piss of Richie Hawtin’s risible “The Cube” marketing recently:

Todd Edwards never made anything like 'Skidoos' sadly

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

I never really followed anything he did after My Way - it was the title track and the first two or three on the album that really did it for me. Did he carry on further down the microhouse path or did he go for full-on wacky cut-up madness?

i just played this 12" for my mom last week - she liked it!

Ha, I nearly posted the exact same thing last night.

The last original production I've heard of Mark's was his horror inc.'s contribution to Superlongevity 4, which unfortunately, I didn't find particularly good at all.

What was his stuff for pregnant ladies like?

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

is there todd edwards stuff with radio sounds, static, crisp cut ups?

i dont think they're really that comparable from what i've heard. edwards seems much more informed by uk garage / 2 step whereas akufen comes from the minimal school, lots of space in the track, very clean sounding samples.

edwards is melody overload, akufen seems to imply melody through his choice of samples.

they're both similar in their funkyness i guess, but thats about it.

it'd be great if they worked on a track together, or if one remixed the other.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Edwards' priority seems to be more on traditional songwriting, his tracks are relatively coherent with each one only cutting up about three or four different sources. the cutups are instantly distinctive but it's mainly about the lead vocal melody, and that guy can write some incredible tunes. that last record of his Odyssey was seriously slept on, it should have been everywhere

what I love about 'Deck The House' is that I think he started off with an expert house chord sequence, then oriented the samples on top to compliment & harmonize with it to take it in more of a dissonant / Public Enemy direction, then subtracted the chord pads. The bass line points at the chords, the dozens of brief tonal stabs hint at the harmony & drive everything forward -- you can feel where the music should be, but the absence is disorienting, the only thing you can count on is the rhythm

always preferred the Herbert remix of 'Deck The House' tho

The 'Pregnant Ladies' stuff is really great, and a testament to the fact he's not just radio samples and microhouse. Really really nice music.

What's he been up to?

ok star grumbles (lukas), Sunday, 18 October 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

I think he's touring now actually (well, playing at various global mutek things, at least). I saw him play last May at Mutek, although I was a bit feverish and not entirely there. A lot of it was less housey, and more on the slower funk side of things. Nothing that blew me away, and he's still up to the same tricks, but I neither hold it against him (I can't fairly hold him up to my 'the guy who got me into house in the first place' standards, anyways), and I would certainly be interested in hearing some recorded stuff, whenever that may or may not surface.
