What is a 'g' in hip-hop?

It might be spelled 'gee', not sure, but it gets mentioned an awful lot.

mei, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously? It's "gangsta", though I guess it can also refer to a gram (as in "two grams of cocaine").

Tuomas, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

groin.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yes seriously.

It can't be gangsta can it? I'm sure I've used it in a context that would rule that out.

If it is gangsta, is it just used generically, like 'niggah' or 'bitch'?

mei, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

gay

blueski, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I'm listening to a hilarious Hip-Hop only station now where ther chorus is:

"Niggah
Bitch
Niggah
Bitch
Niggah
Bitch
Niggah
Bitch"

but even they couldn't with a straight face call each other gangsters, when they're not?

mei, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

gangsta andy partidge, obv.

Er... not to be rude, but if you're asking what it means, you probably shouldn't be using it.

Richard Wood Johnson, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

poster didn't say they used it, holmes.

thats right, scholesy

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it really does mean "gangsta". Can't think of any other rap meaning for it, if it refers to a person. And yeah, it's a generic term, it doesn't necessarily mean a big-time criminal.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

G can also refer to a thousand dollars. Or Gilbert.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

It is etymologically linked to the word "gangster", but like the word "douchebag", it has come to mean something quite different from its lexicological progenitor.

I think perhaps that in the "Outtie (Audi) 5000, G" era, G could mean either "guy" or "girl." Lo these many years later, of course, it is almost certainly gangsta.

A letter that is usually silent when it appears at the end of words in in hiphop songs ("Steady Mobbin'," "Nothin' But A G Thang," etc.).

mike a, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

In fact, the "g"s referenced, are those extra g's left off of contractions in the black vernacular.

I eat cannibals, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

Trick question! There is no 'g' in hip-hop. Try using a dictionary, people!

dad a, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

g was used as short for 'guy' (I think) in Damon Runyon stories about NY lowlife as far back as the twenties.

G can mean several things, actually.

Usually, it means 'gangsta,' and connotes an individual whose early life was spent 'on the streets,' or 'in the hood.' This individual may have spent his formative years 'in a gang,' or 'slanging drugs on a street corner,' indicating an intersection of two ghetto streets.

Often, however, g indicates a middle-class individual whose parents went to UCLA. In these cases, g still means 'gangsta', but the individual spent their early life 'on the cul-de-sac', or 'in The Grove.' These individuals are 'gangstas,' in that they call themselves such, and they have a in-depth knowledge of the LAPD, whose members they employ as private security guards.

humansuit, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

um, GORP stands for GOBS OF RAISINS and PEANUTS. granola was only added after granola came into the lexicon in the 70s-- trust me, my grandma has been calling it GORP since she was popping babies out.
