"Whirlwind" was close for me. The other poll had me playing Siren nonstop today and every time "Could It Happen to Me?" came on I got itchy skippy finger.

Davey D, Thursday, 16 August 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

"Could It Happen to Me?" has that great pianner hook and Ferry singing "oh boy is it getting rough/when my Old World charm isn't quite enough"! What's wrong with it?

My least favorite (but by no means a bad song) is "Sentimental Fool," whose instrumental intro seems, for once, inappropriate.

I just voted "Whirlwind" the best song on Siren in the other exciting Siren poll.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

For me, it would probably have to go to "Whirlwind" (I started the other poll, and "Could It Happen to Me?" is the one I voted for as best). Though "Whirlwind"'s not a bad song.

Both Ends Burning. One of my least favorite songs by them.

i always skip Love is the Drug, so it must be that one!

>>"Sentimental Fool," whose instrumental intro seems, for once, inappropriate.

But, but... it worked soooo well as the opening song of the setlist on the '75 Siren tour, several minutes of minor-key droning in the darkness, Ferry finally entering to intone "Surely you cannot be leading me on..." It was majestic.

My vote's for "Nightingale," and I like that one, just a bit less than the others.

Agreed -- how on earth is "Sentimental Fool"'s intro "inappropriate?"

Voted for "Nightingale," btw.

Agreed -- how on earth is "Sentimental Fool"'s intro "inappropriate?"

It faffs about, much too languorous for my liking. Usually I don't mind these instrumental longeurs in Roxy (well, no, I don't much like "The Bogus Man").

glad to see nobody's mentioned "She Sells" yet...

henry s, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE the intro to "Sentimental Fool." The guitar part sounds all Frippy to me.

"Could It Happen to Me" has always seemed forced to me - musically, at least. It will admit that it has great lyrics, but the melody doesn't do anything for me at all (and the intro sax/piano hook that keeps popping up makes me queasy).

Davey D, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

I like the sax/piano hook on that song...what bothers me is the little-girl-lost sentiment of the song...

My recollection is that the Spin Record Guide got the rap on Siren exactly right -- that songs like "Could It Happen To Me?" "Whirlwind" and "Nightingale" just weren't up to snuff from a songwriting standpoint. That said, I can't remember whether it mentions the extent to which it's brilliantly lyrically/conceptually, which is why it's still better than any other record of theirs.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

You just named my bottom three! "Whirlwind" IS fun though. I've always liked the line "crack your cheeks and blow."

Davey D, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

Rob Sheffield writes: "In `Could It Happen to Me?' and "Just Another High," Ferry faces the music and dances into the realization that `my Old World charm isn't quite enough,' which only adds to his Old World charm."

Can someone send me a link to what exactly this Spin Record Guide is? I want to buy, but all the book sites I go to, there are a number of them...many thanks.
ps I voted for Could It Happen to Me

The SPIN Alternative Guide, published in 1995. It's something of a bible, really. Much of the writing is extraordinary.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

Awesome, thanks m'lord
