October 1st 2007 sees the release of Radio 1. Established 1967, a
compilation celebrating the 40th anniversary of Radio 1, which first
broadcast on 30th September 1967.

Unique, in terms of most compilations, the album gathers together a
series of 40 cover versions by contemporary artists, each one taken
from one of the forty years Radio 1 has been on air. Included is a
cover version by The Kaiser Chiefs of the very first track played on
the station, Flowers In The Rain by The Move.

The forty tracks included are totally exclusive and recorded
specifically for this album. They have not previously been available
elsewhere.

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

I so fucking want to hear that Foo Fighters cover, but the Fratellis one sounds the most horrifying.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know where to start...

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit, just noticed Klaxons covering "No Diggity", that could either be the most awesome thing ever or a trainwreck.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

could be OK:
1972 – Betcha By Golly Wow (The Stylistics) covered by Sugababes
1977 – Sound & Vision (David Bowie) covered by Franz Ferdinand
1978 – Teenage Kicks (The Undertones) covered by The Raconteurs
1981 – Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie) covered by Keane
1986 – Don't Get Me Wrong (The Pretenders) covered by Lily Allen
1988 – Fast Car (Tracy Chapman) covered by Mutya Buena
1991 – Crazy For You (Madonna) covered by Groove Armada

the rest must die

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, meant to delete that Teenage Kicks one (would be competent but so pointless a direct repro)

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

Since Sound and Vision is currently doing the rotation in my head as likely candidate for greatest song ever recorded, I'd have to pick that.

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

2005 – Father & Son (Yusuf & Ronan Keating)

Huh? Did they perform it together or something?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

The Fratellis should be beaten to death obviously. The Lily Allen sounds appalling - I can just hear her squeaking the chorus of DGMW.

But I think I must go for Razorlight.

I bet the Girls Aloud is magnificent, also the Sugababes. Also I think Corinne B-R might work.

Dr.C, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

Can't Stand Losing You (The Police) covered by Mika
- awful

Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie) covered by Keane
- could be hilarious

You Sexy Thing (Hot Chocolate) covered by Stereophonics
- ?!?!

Don't Get Me Wrong (The Pretenders) covered by Lily Allen
- kinda fitting even though i like the song and hate lily allen

Lullaby (the Cure) covered by Editors
- why why why

Ray Of Light (Madonna) covered by Natasha Bedingfield
- carbon copy

Toxic (Britney Spears) covered by Hard-Fi
- sounds like a car crash, will in fact be utterly dull

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i think 'Sound And Vision' fits FF like a glove tho not particularly challenging/hard to imagine.

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

2005 – Father & Son (Yusuf & Ronan Keating)

Huh? Did they perform it together or something?

I envy you having no prior knowledge of this abomination

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

1995 – Stillness In Time (Jamiroquai) covered by Calvin Harris

real under-rated awfulness here

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Never heard the song, or of Calvin Harris. I'm probably very lucky there.

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

1980 – Too Much Too Young (The Specials) covered by Kasabian

Gumph!

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

1992 – It Must Be Love (Madness) covered by Paolo Nutini
- solo, acoustic guitar, i can hear it now.

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

1987 – You Sexy Thing (Hot Chocolate)
1992 – It Must Be Love (Madness)

You what? Weren't these hits in 76 and 81 respectively?

Billy Dods, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Reissues. PRetty much fucks up the whole concept doesn't it.

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

Plus at least 3 of these were covers anyway (inc Madness)

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I bet the Girls Aloud is magnificent, also the Sugababes.

wasn't GA doing teenage dirtbag not already a b-side to one of their singles? a live version IIRC.
the suga1babes thing is the only one I am looking forward to hearing.

Joris Stereo, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think the frank fergussons doing sound and vision is a good idea at all. it's one of bowie's "hi i'm dave" songs and FF really can't drop the archness convinvingly yet, cf their fuck up of lcd soundsystem's all my friends.

acrobat, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

1968 – All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix Experience)by Fratellis

PRESS! PRESS! PRESS!!!!

not even the feeling doing Carly simon....

Mark G, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

These polls need multiple "tick all that apply" check boxes instead of radio buttons.

onimo, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

I want to hear this: 2001 – Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus) covered by Girls Aloud

Fratellis doing Hendrix is just WTF.

onimo, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

The Streets covering "Your Song" sounds very scary indeed.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I want to hear this: 2001 – Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus) covered by Girls Aloud

Me too! If only for WTFness. I have a feeling that

1982 – Town Called Malice (The Jam) covered by McFly

is something they've already done too, but I can't bring myself to check

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

1990 – Englishman In New York (Sting) covered by Razorlight

This is pretty horrific

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

The Great Beyond (REM)

I know I'll never forget what I was doing when this one was announced on the Sunday charts

Will probably be the worst: 2003 – Don't Look Back Into The Sun (The Libertines) covered by The View

One that offends me most: 1979 – Can't Stand Losing You (The Police) covered by Mika

McFly doing The Jam could be OK, I suppose.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Sugababes is probably the only one that could possibly be OK. The G.A. one in theory, but I bet it'll actually be pretty underwhelming.

I voted for Kasabian because I got the biggest knee-jerk wtf reaction to that pairing, actually a couple of them are probably going to be OKish, but the vast majority of these just sound dreadful to me. Not dreadful as in something you might get some pleasure out of hating either, just a bunch of jobsworth, boring pointless fucks covering a bunch of mostly half-decent songs in a forgettable, pointless, soulless lulz-free way. I wonder if the compilers of this record are doing it with any enthusiasm. This will be the musical equivalent to what? Standing at a bus stop in the cold and it's raining, and your feet are wet, and you're waiting for the bus to come and take you to some night out that you don't really want to go to, and then the bus doesn't turn up anyway, and someone phones you up and gives you a hard time for not showing up, then you get home and yr g/f gives you a hard time for something or other so you go to bed and lie awake and wonder what life is all about, exactly, except not in a good way, you just lie there feeling miserable and pointless. That's what comes to mind when I read that lineup.

Pashmina, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

McFly doing The Jam could be OK, I suppose

Agreed. Don't like the song that much anyway.

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

... it could even be improved on by not having Weller's gorblimey vocalising on it

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

That's what I was thinking, girlish howling > Weller ten days out of ten.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

i like Jam-era Weller. McFly dude's voice is so weedy dull.

no Muse on this. small mercies?

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

1992 – On A Ragga Tip (SL2) covered by Muse

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

"Ernie - The Fastest Milkman in the West"

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

"I like to move it" covered by Muse would have ruled this comp.

Pashmina, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, that's telepathy in action!

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Or "No Limits", better still.

Pashmina, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

You're reading my mind.

They could have did it as "I like to Muse it, Muse it"

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

1993 - Informer (Snow) covered by Arctic Monkeys

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

1997 – No Way No Way (Vanilla) covered by Dirty Pretty Things

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

1998 – Ray Of Light (Madonna) covered by Natasha BedingfieldDimmu Borgir.

Pashmina, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

At least Pete Doherty's not on, doing "My Old Man's a Dustman" or sumthin'

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

2002 - Grindin' (Clipse) covered by Kate Nash

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost)They should have had him doing "Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West", that would have suited him down to the ground.

I might perhaps be alone in thinking that Maximo Park covering Justin Timberlake might actually be okay.

I bet the Mika/Police one is horrible but not as bad as his cover of I Want You Back that I was exposed to at Glastonbury.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 August 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm convinced Radio 1 assigned years to the bands but the bands chose the songs.

blueski, Friday, 17 August 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

What in blue blazes is "The Great Beyond"?

Is it the pushing an elephant up the stairs song? I couldn't sing you a single other REM song from the last 13 years

The Klaxons' cover of "My Love" worked out pretty well...I mean, nothing mindblowing, but I'm sure "No Diggity" will turn out just as well.

Tape Store, Sunday, 19 August 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine No Diggity by The Klaxons being anything more than awful. It's one of the greatest singles ever, how could they possibly do it justice?

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

2006 – Steady As She Goes (The Raconteurs) covered by Corinne Bailey Rae 0

.. because this might actually be good/better?

Mark G, Monday, 20 August 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

It is a fucking travesty that no one voted for that Carly Simon cover.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 August 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed. But there was just so many choices to choose from!

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

i can sort of imagine what most of them will be like, but not the fratellis. sixth-form music studies end-of-term performance, i guess.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly I can imagine exactly what the Shittyphonics one will be like.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

ILM hates fun shockah

musically, Monday, 20 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, mr fun-time happy guys, that's the stereophonics alright.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 20 August 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I cannot think of a more regimented, restricted, mundane, fun-polarised collection of moneygrabbing twatheads than this fucking list, Mr. Musically.

Just got offed, Monday, 20 August 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

If you can't find at least one vaguely decent pairing then you need to lighten up. I mean, the KLAXONS are doing NO DIGGITY! That might turn out horrible but at least it's a pretty amusing idea.

musically, Monday, 20 August 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

Lily Allen's doing "Don't Get Me Wrong"???!!! Holy horrific!!! Her voice is no match to Chrissie Hynde's tone. Allen's voice, besides having no distinct tone (ergo, pretty generic), is just weak and squeaky at places that the cover's bound to trail off to pathetic-dom. She has more of a Nina Persson voice so she should switch places with Just Jack and cover "Love Fool" instead.

redekmanguz, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that'd be exciting!

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

how about louis, you and dj martain provide us with an alternative listing?

xp

1988 – Somewhere In My Heart (Aztec Camera) covered by Sulley Muntari

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

1998 - Witness to a Murder pt 1 (Mansun) covered by 65 Days of Static

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

there never was a witness to a murder part 1 (are you deliberately trying to piss me off here?)

Just got offed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

it's a very rare demo recording only known by the most devoted fans. i thought you of all people would have known about it?

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Go and stand in the corner

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

come with me?

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Four corners in a room, plenty of room for everyone

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

that's my other favourite on the masun rarities cd

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

*mansun

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

I have that "Manson" single, you know...

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

Klaxons' "No Diggity" is like a less smug Jamie Lidell. Approved.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to enter a formal request for confirmation that the Streets Elton John cover is just a shitty as I imagined it would be.

John Justen, Monday, 8 October 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

ILX circa 2002 would argue with you, but they'd be wrong

Dom Passantino, Monday, 8 October 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

playlouder (well ok, john doran) have given this atrocity a reet kicking.

can any one confirm this????

also i like both band and song, but how the hell did this get no votes?

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

actually they might be quriky (retarded) enough to pull it off reasonably well.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

'alex macpherson listens to radio 1 40th anniversary comp. and ruminates' would make for an A+ reality show.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:20 (eighteen years ago)

tho i guess we can't use alex macphereson and reality in the same sentence.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:21 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, dude's pretty svelte.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, the correct zing we were looking for was 'i dunno, dude's pretty svelt'
please try again later.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 08:33 (eighteen years ago)

You svelte it wrong.

Mark G, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Having now listened to this album, Drinking in LA (Bran Van 3000) covered by The Twang is my new vote for the worst song ever recorded.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

It's like Lo Fidelity Allstars crossed with Primal Scream crossed with those weird faceless children who scream at you in nightmares.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I still want to hear "Ban Don Derun" by the Foos, just that one, no other.

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

i can't remember what i voted for, but the only real losers are the public.
