The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

and feel free to argue what bands belong in what genre

The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

stop stop stop the madness

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Currently the Doom/Stoner/Drone/Post Metal genre I guess. Alternative Metal/Grunge and Industrial in my youth.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Louis's just pissed off there's no Oceansize option.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Mind you he's getting into metal now. ILM can shape his future listening!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

oceansize/youthmovies progressive british hard rock movement stands to take over music

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

and what bands are at the forefront of that apart from Oceansize?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Trying to decide where to place my weirdo-metal leanings, since there is no category for weirdometal.

John Justen, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, if there was a Foetus option, I'd vote that.

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oceansize are a band apart, HGN.

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

so the progressive british hard rock movement consists of one band?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

I mentioned Youthmovies, did I not?

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

As soon as I figure out the intersection point between SYL, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Ulver, Korplikaani (Yeah, pretty sure I spelled that wrong), and Fantomas, I'll get back to you all on this one.

xposts, obv.

John Justen, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, yeah, whatever genre Mr. Bungle's in.

God, I don't know. Can't we love all genres? Can't we just love music regardless of genre?

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Trying to decide where to place my weirdo-metal leanings, since there is no category for weirdometal."

Wikipedia listed avant-garde metal but I didn't include it as I thought people would say no such thing existed and was utterly ridiculous.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

U WERE RONG ;_;

John Justen, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Someone will be along to say it's ridiculous soon.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, John.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

I can't work out what the difference between Viking Metal and Black Metal are? Obviously there are some BM bands that are Viking and some that aren't. Is Enslaved Viking or BM?

Metal I like: Electric Wizard, Sigh, Emperor, Bal Sagoth, Rhapsody, Manowar. I guess they don't really all fit in any style.

the next grozart, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

I can't work out what the difference between Viking Metal and Black Metal are?

Mostly lyrical content, but I feel that the "Viking Metal" I've heard is a bit slower and less.... bleak? depressing?

Wikipedia says

"Viking metal is known as either a type of metal music or as a cross-genre reference usually used to describe the lyrical and thematic elements of bands rather than the music itself. The bands associated with Viking metal cover a broad range of musical genres and influences, such as folk metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal, and power metal."

Lyrics are shit.

Kick ass Black Metal lyrics :

TEN THOUSAND TROLLS HARD AS ROCK COLD AS ICE
OH, THEY RAN WHEN I ROSE TO FACE THEM
TEN HUNGRY WAVES THEY SWALLOWED MY SHIP
OH, I STEADILY WALKED HOME (AND I ONLY GOT WET ON MY FEET)

"Kick ass" Viking Metal lyrics :

Welcome to the hall of death
Great Odin we hail him
Come in, enjoy the glorious afterlife, my friend
Here we fill the ranks of Tyr
Battle is our way
Every morning day and night till the winter fiercest come

MRZBW, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite is whatever category DHG, Virus and Ved Buens Ende+++++ fits in.

MRZBW, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

(And Aura Noir and the "blacker" variations on thrash should really win too)

MRZBW, Friday, 17 August 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

If I'm in love with that new Angelic Process album, where do I vote?

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 17 August 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

80s glam metal.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 17 August 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

Stop.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 17 August 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

"If I'm in love with that new Angelic Process album, where do I vote?"

I woud say that would come under doom/drone

The Twisted Pollstarter, Friday, 17 August 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you get confused logging in and out with all these account?

onimo, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

accounts

onimo, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

MRZBW, I prefer the Viking lyrics to the BM lyrics tbh.

the next grozart, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

why is there is no option for Canadian Werewolf True Pitch Black Metal, this twisted pollstarter seems not twisted but merely unaware

Vas Djifrens, Friday, 17 August 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot "battle metal" as well. I'm useless.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Friday, 17 August 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

What will geir pick!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 17 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Don't like the list 'cuz it lumps doom/stoner in with drone/post. Love the former, not so much the latter. Go with NWOBHM.

Bob Standard, Friday, 17 August 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

No complaints about goth metal not being in there (yet).

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

There aren't any complaints about it not being in there because it is in there.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 17 August 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh so it is. I didn't see it earlier.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 17 August 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Get those votes in you damn metalheads.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

Toss-up between Doom/etc & Grindcore.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Xhuxk once opined that "It can be argued that metal actually peaked before it even had a name", and I'm inclined to agree with that. Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, The Stooges, Uriah Heep, etc.: Giants all, and they all debuted before May '71, when Metal Mike Saunders officially gave the genre its name. And that's good enough for me. Proto-metal it is.

But I also love me huge portions of Classic and AOR Metal, and lesser portions of Speed- and Black- and Doom-Metal. And probably the '70s-Heavy/Blues (whatever that is.)

A Funk Metal conundrum: Most classic funk bands dabbled in metal and did a damn fine job. And ditto metal bands who could play as funky as they wanted (even if only accidentally.) So, then how come Funk Metal sucks immensely?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

Because they were doing it on purpose, tagging it for something you-ought-to-consume-because-it-was-once-thought-new-and-hip. Anyway, that's the way I remember it. The Dan Reed Network. Extreme. Electric Somethingorother. When you get purposeful on creating a hybrid genre and specifically defining and telling people about it, as if it's a new plate of squid-in-ink-juice on the menu, things go downhill fast.

People obsessed with naming and defining ever more thinly sliced microniches of heavy metal -- or any other flavor of pop music -- are usually in the business of outlining decadence. Even though they don't know it.

Gorge, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 07:13 (eighteen years ago)

Funk metal really did suck, didn't it!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Like MVB, I'm going with Proto-Metal (whatever that may be). (OK, I'll come up with my own ass-backwards definition and say that P-M ranks would be filled with the likes of the MC5, the Stooges, Alice Cooper, the NY Dolls, '70s Aerosmith, etc. Likewise, the Zep, Sab & Purps, would of course be included. Oh, and Hendrix, anc Cream, and Blue Cheer, and so on and so forth.)

JN$OT, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

That's exactly what I meant. I know there's a lot of fans of that stuff who would complain it wasn't included.

Black Sabbath and Deep Purple would be classic metal to me(maybe not others?)
Who knows what you would call Led Zep because they hated being called Heavy Metal didn't they? But I'm sure plenty would consider them classic metal too.
Possibly i should've included a "classic rock" option? Oh well I'd say that's what the 70's heavy/blues* is anyway. Which was included for xhukk and gorge really.

*couldn't think of a better term,sorry.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

Decided Black Metal was my closest option.

John Justen, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

See? I knew all that talk about doom/drone hitting hipster critical mass was just bullshit.

Bob Standard, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder who the joker was voting for funk metal?!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

You people need to listen to some proper metal.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Post metal is, by definition, not metal.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe all the votes were for doom or stoner

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 23 August 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Which was included for xhukk and gorge really.

I didn't vote. I see it was a wise policy.

this guy

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 23 August 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Doom/Stoner/Drone/Post Metal

What does this mean? All the stoner metal I reviewed for paying slots in the mainstream press had nothing to do with post metal (what's that?) and drone. The large number of stoner metal CDs I listened to were retro, even when they missed the target.

The reactionary ILRolling Metal "fan" has always metaphorically been akin to someone who slips back onto the battlefield to bayonet the wounded, or cheat at a straightforward game of cards by substituting something hidden up the sleeve for a bad or mediocre hand.

Gorge, Thursday, 23 August 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

What the hell are you talking about?

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea, but bayoneting the wounded is a service to mankind.

Bob Standard, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Helps take care of overpopulation, provides good fertilizer.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Still no Geir metal vote?

t**t, Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe he was one of the AOR votes.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Gorge, Thursday, 23 August 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. Of course. That explains everything! I totally get your cryptic and insulting statement now.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Come on George just this once give someone a straight answer!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 23 August 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Over 50 votes!! I'm surprised at the winning margin it has to be said.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 23 August 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

"I wonder who the joker was voting for funk metal?!"

I skimmed the poll, decided it was kinda bullshit, and figured no one else would vote for funk metal.

I eat cannibals, Thursday, 23 August 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Poll Skimming: C or D?

Bob Standard, Thursday, 23 August 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be more interested in the breakdown between stoner/Doom and post-metal/drone. I suspect that would be more telling.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 24 August 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Poll skimming— S/D!

I eat cannibals, Friday, 24 August 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

xpost si

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

If there was a poll on the breakdown for the 4 genres it would probably get about 3 votes this time.
I would expect most votes were for doom and stoner though and a couple each for the others.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 24 August 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

Who voted metalcore?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 3 January 2008 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

And I finally found out what AOR stood for a week or so ago. I always thought it stood for Adult Orientated Rock.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 3 January 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

Ha! I missed this one. But it doesn't look like my vote was needed.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 3 January 2008 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

Haha true. I'm still surprised at the lack of votes for bm and dm though.
