There's no best-of Kraftwerk, so let's make one.

One of those bands where the best-known material is the most worthy.
...off the top of my head...
Autobahn Computer World Home Computer The Man-Machine Metal on Metal The Model Neon Lights Ohm Sweet Ohm Radioactivity (my favorite) Trans-Europe Express
― stephen, Monday, 20 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
Neon Lights Hall of Mirrors Pocket Calculator Vitamin Trans-Europe Express Kometmelodie Musique Non Stop Autobahn Stratavarius (live) The Robots
― sexyDancer, Monday, 20 August 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)
how apt; i've been listening to nothing but kraftwerk for the past month.
Autobahn Numbers (preferably a live one, with that jamming electro beat) Europe Endless Franz Schubert Boom Boing Tschak Home Computer (The Mix version) Spacelab Neon Lights Pocket Calculator Dentaku
― Stevie D, Monday, 20 August 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)
the only song that appears on all three lists so far: Autobahn
― stephen, Monday, 20 August 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
Musique Non Stop Numbers It's More Fun To Compute Computer Love Neon Lights Trans-Europe Express The Robots Radioactivity Strom Uranium
― blunt, Monday, 20 August 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)
(on all four so far: Neon Lights)
― blunt, Monday, 20 August 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
The 12" version of Neon Lights is my fave (found it on Ultra Rare Traxx Vol 3 boot)
― sexyDancer, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)
ah right! Neon Lights, somehow i missed that one on all three (now four)
― stephen, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
also right off the top of my head, and in no particular order:
- trans-europe express - metal on metal (i'd make a case for having these as the same song, but stephen has set a precedent) - computer love (my core KW moment; the album version, not the single edit) - radio-activity - tanzmusik - autobahn (the minimum-maximum version, which i adore) - neon lights (hey, i ain't gonna be the iconoclast) - europe endless - sex object (yes, really) - ohm sweet ohm
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)
Chronologically,
- Elektrisches Roulette
- Radioactivity - Radioland
- Showroom Dummies - Trans-Europe Express + Metal on Metal
- The Robots - Neon Lights
- Computer World - Numbers + Computer World, Pt. 2 - Home Computer
I guess I cheated, twice, but in both cases the songs are inseparable and complement each other so flawlessly. Neon Lights is going to make nearly every version of this POX, I suppose. The last few minutes of it would make perfect music for breaking out of the atmosphere and into outer space, if the engines weren't so loud.

i can feel a huge kraftwerk session coming on.
IF i'm allowed to have TEE and MoM as one track, then ... actually, it gets tough. "tour de france"? maybe. more likely "computer world". there's a strong case for "numbers", too (esp if i can do the "... into computer world part two" thing). and "radioland", and "antenna". oh god.
and, of course, "the model", which i notice we're all ignoring. hmm. actually, if it wasn't for the shockingly poor version on "minimum-maximum", which sounds like a kabaret kraftwerk kovers konvention, i'd probably have put it in my original list somewhere.
then again, maybe not.
i forget how much i love kraftwerk.

I forgot to add that Señor Coconut's El Baile Alemán will forever remain u+k!
― blunt, Monday, 20 August 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)
'heavy metal kids'! 'ruckzuck'!
― geeta, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)
oh come on now, 'heavy metal kids'/any kraftneu does not count!
― Stevie D, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)
"Wellenlange" is a really good one from the second album. But then, the second album is pretty solid, I'd say. Along with the uberclassic Electric Cafe album. I need to give Trans Europe Express another spin before commenting, but it sounded fairly solid as well. Of course "Computer Love" has always been my favourite (full album version as Grimly says), but I'm trying to branch out here. Radioactivity album was good to revisit, I actually recognized the songs and I didn't expect to. Autobahn album and the first album were fairly boring. I used to have that red album with the Model on it but I don't want to have that again for some reason.
I must admit it feels a bit strange as a long-time New Order fan not to have heard the song "Europe Endless" before.

sex object (yes, really)
!
― Eisbaer, Sunday, 16 March 2008 06:49 (seventeen years ago)
Why? I don't get this
― baaderonixx, Monday, 17 March 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
Because it sounds an awful lot like some early New Order especially "Your Silent Face" which the band originally entitled "KW1" in honor of their heroes, Kraftwerk! :)

Bimble, you're really missing out by not giving Man Machine another shot. "The Model" is catchy on the first few listens, but for me at least, it's "Spacelab", "Metropolis", and especially "Neon Lights" that make it the best, most consistent Kraftwerk album of all. That's not even to mention "The Robots", or the title track. Shit, there's only 6 tracks on it, and each one is perfect.
― Z S, Monday, 17 March 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)
i feel like the Man Machine is the best overall album that they did. but really, they didnt do much that i don't like.
― pipecock, Monday, 17 March 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
"Man Machine" = first one I heard/owned (and still my favourite too!)
― Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)
"Man Machine" Minimum-Maximum is a monolith. Hearing it live has broken my head.
― baaderonixx, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)
I'm hearing Man Machine tonight for the first time in many years. Sigh. Let me say first that I'm embarassed to have been prejudiced for many years about "Neon Lights" simply because I heard the dismal American band Love Tractor's version of "Neon Lights" before I ever heard Kraftwerk's.
And hearing "The Model" for the first time in as many years is really something. I swear I'm gonna do a proper POX of these guys at some point. In fact, on ILE there is this thread that keeps getting revived asking for someone to compile a bunch of Kraftwerk songs to play at the gym and the funny thing is NO ONE EVER RISES TO THE CHALLENGE and the thread just keeps getting revived over and over. I must conquer this. Who will beat me to it?
― Bimble, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
Also that album entitled "The Mix" really wasn't so great okay?
― Bimble, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)
Hey -- let's not go cuttin' on Love Tractor. I used to work with the bass player's sister.
The Mix was a total let down, yes.
― Alex in NYC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
I am actually still working on a gym POX for these guys, and I've got some ideas so far. I'm taking it very seriously, in fact. I actually got goose pimples today listening to "Neon Lights" and "The Model"! Sometimes I admit they are a bit boring, but when you are in the right mood...
They remind me of ice skating. So cold, but it's like gliding gracefully on ice. Beauty in coldness.
― Bimble, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
what is wrong with the mix? those are the versions they do live, and the minimum-maximum DVD is pretty awesome. i like the mix, it is the closest thing they have to a greatest hits, you just need to add a couple jams.
