... that is, as in the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Premiering in early November at BAM.

Well, moving on from states shows encouraging flexibility.

Sur, this was like a month ago when I checked. I was researching something unrelated for work -- prob. something about Mark Morris.

ladies love sufjan ... at least, my wife does. and several female friends. i don't think he's awful, i enjoy some songs of his. but i find the extra-musical stuff that surrounds him to be a little bit unbearable.
― tylerw, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
Reminds me of a 1996 review in the NY Times of Combustible Edison playing at Windows on the World, and how the band couldn't quite cut it as a lounge band in an authentic lounge setting. Same way, the burden here is to play in a hall where, as a composer and arranger, he can't just allude to Glass and the like but has to hold his own in comparison to them.

i resent this. we don't all drink starbucks and watch garden state while listening to this. it's only about 90% of us
― harminov, Saturday, 3 November 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)
So, when does "Minnesota" arrive then?
― Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 November 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)
This whole thing sounds really embarrassing. Sufjan is a kitten of a man born in a cornfield, and he's triyng to take on thurrr bright lights big city, and the ghosts of genius composers past. It seems like it's much too big for both his upbringing and his musical ability.
But I'm sure the 35 year old Park Slope crowd from Illinois and Nebraska will lurrrrrrrrv it. It's basically tailor made for them.

This one was a BAM commission, and it makes sense for artists to use commissions to push their boundaries, whether or not they succeed at the work created.
― Eazy, Saturday, 3 November 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)
right. i think the story goes he didn't even know what commission meant.
i mean, you'd be kind of a fool to turn it down.

Got free tickets to the opening. Never a big Surfin Stevens, but I had a fine time. No surprises in "BQE," save one little orchestral freakout section. The orchesta/screen split was done well, and the last half of the video was really great (and during the 2nd half, I thought some of the video stuff was A++++ would zone out to again).
All in all, I can't imagine "BQE" being worth price of admission unless you're a big fan. Felt like a 30-minute string of instrumentals from his album. That said, I guess he's got his style down enough where his sound is distinct. Surprisingly good job w/ the video, though.

On July 21, 2009 it was announced that the multimedia package would be released on October 20, 2009. It will consist of a CD of the show's soundtrack, a DVD of Brooklyn-Queen Expressway footage that accompanied the original performance (not a film of the performance itself), a 40-page booklet with liner notes and photos, and a stereoscopic 3D View-Master reel. There will also be a limited edition version that features the soundtrack on 180-gram vinyl and a 40-page BQE-themed comic book starring the show's hula hooping wonder women, the Hooper Heroes.
