I rekcon this is not only the finest album of the Tropicalia movement (even though it came afterwards, essentially), but one of the greatest, most audacious, most fun, most tuneful, most brilliant records ever. What do you think?

i've never heard it but would be very excited were this the case, i found build up a little flat in places, certainly not as good as davina comedia, and that put me off. Hoje O Primeiro is supposed to be a little wilder, proggier, is it similiar in tone to that mutantes english language lp? that was the same year no?
― cw, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)
I've not heard the English language LP, it's about the only early Mutantes I've not got (I have the first five LPs).
This is... not proggy, because that implies length and indulgence. This is incredibly fucking tight and focused but also completely fucking schizo and off-the-wall. The 2006 Rev-Ola remaster is also the best-sounding thing I have by any of the Tropicalistas, astonishing bass and guitar sound. It's totally a throwback to the first two Mutantes albums, but less damaged. They were obviously better, more accomplished and assured in the studio and with their instruments than when they started out.

okay sold. the artwork of the reissue is a big improvement also, that horrible wilting caricature of rita has put me off in the past. i like the english language lp a lot, some of the versions of stuff from the first 3 lps are inferior and a lot of the mystique is lost in the translation of the lyrics but it's loads of fun nonethless

There's seriously some of the best guitar and bass playing on this record ever ever ever.

I picked this up on your recommendation, Mr Mouthall, and I have to agree it is genius. It's so confident, audacious and assured, way better than the equivalent Mutantes stuff. Great songs and amazing arrangements above all. Although I ended up getting the reissue with the shitty original cover, rest assured it still sounds great. This is a fantastic recording. Makes me want to get that second Soul Jazz Brasilian comp that has the 70s stuff on it. Anyone heard that?
― myopic_void, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)
wow. this finally arrived today. it is pretty amazing, far more unhinged than i was expecting. far better than build up. the soul jazz brazil 70 comp is very fine also. (this thread cost me big bucks)

Yes cw, I don't like 'build-up' at all, myself. Looking forward to checking out this recommendation.
I know this is not a search and destroy thread, but I thought I'd mention while I'm here that I have her self-titled efforts from 1979 and 1980, which are mostly silly and cheesy, but contain a couple of gems each. Doce Vampiro is such a fantastic track.

both of her first 2 "solo" records are good, some brilliant stuff on par with the proper os mutantes material, and some songs that fall a bit flat.
