TS: George Michael's "Freedom '90" vs "Too Funky"

The easy answer is "Freedom '90," but its Top Ten knockoff holds up very well, and probably does the house-piano shufflebeat thing better. I suspect "Too Funky"'s a bit obscure. Plus, its video is an improved, streamlined version of "Freedom '90."

I like "Freedom '90" fine, but it got SO much airplay from programmers, relieved to find the one "fast" George album on an album whose dirges and minor chords begged to be taken seriously. Thus, as a manifesto its impact is dulled. But as a proto coming-out narrative, it's almost as moving as the Pet Shop Boys' "Was It Worth It?"

"Freedom 90" is better than "Too Funky," but "Happy" is better than better than both of them.

Oh god, the "Too Funky" video is probably my favorite video of all time for one reason: handlebars.

The "Too Funky" CD single has something called "Too Jazzy," which is a laid-back merging of both "Too Funky" and "Happy."

They are kind similar. I prefer "Too Funky" but "Freek!" is way better than both.

I think "Freedom '90" is the better song, but I've gotten a little tired of it, just because it's one of a crop of about a half-dozen songs that all my 32-year-old friends play to death at parties and weddings (others include "Laid," "No Diggity," and "Groove Is in the Heart").

"Too Funky," meanwhile, is underrated. Koo koo ka choo, Mrs. Robinson.
