...does anyone own the Expedit from Ikea?
Been wanting to buy this - seems ideal - but of course Ikea doesn't list how many LPs it actually holds. I just counted my LPs (god help me - I cheated a little using a tape measure and rounding up but still) and have close to 2000 and would like a 2500 capacity so I don't have to buy another one for a while. Should I just buy two? Anyone know how many records this thing holds? Link to follow...

that's 6 foot wide and has 5 shelves. do you have 30ft of LPs? (i have no idea how many records fit in a foot. anyone?)
― koogs, Friday, 24 August 2007 09:33 (eighteen years ago)
I actually figured out that a rough estimate is 175 LPs per every 36". So let's see - 30 feet would be 360 inches...my math is bad - does that mean the capacity is around 1,750? That might work if I get rid of some shit first (long overdue anyway)

Oh my lord, I just bought the Expedit last week in order to store my records. It's a dream. I'll count how many records it holds when I sober up.

I got this last month when I moved into my new flat, having just spent 2 years with them all collecting on the floor. I got the 5x5 cabinet, and each of the compartments takes around 75-85 records. Mine just take up 10 compartments, totaling around 750-850 records (it looks a lot less than it did spread across the floor).
So all in all, with the 5x5, you're probably looking at around 2000 records.
The unit is brilliant. No sag at all in the compartments, because they're split up into quite small blocks and the shelves are fairly thick. I did just about go mental, and rip my hands to shreds, trying to piece the thing together, but it was worth it.

anyone have one of these long term? i'm wondering about sag after years, not just a month or two.

Yeah, a little worried about the 'assembly' part. Between my wife and I we're pretty handy, but Ikea's instructions are notoriously vague and crazy.

The construction was fine for the most part. You just lay it out on the floor and piece together the grid. It was just one part - when we'd put together all the internal shelves and we tried to join the last two outer edges that we struggled. It was really doing my head in, but we eventually managed to sort of force. I found that standing it upright and simply pulling my weight down on it helped get everything into place. It doesn't sound too scientific, but it's just worth knowing that it might not all click into place in 5 minutes. Chill some beers in preparation for 'job well done' time.

I've had one for a couple of years and it's fine. The shelves are thick and only about a foot wide, so there's minimal chance of saggage.

I'm down the Expedit. Owned 2 of the smaller ones for about 6 months and have friends that have owned them for years ... no problems.

I need something like this that is CD sized.

Expedit rules. Have one in place now for nigh on five years - no complaints.

scout's right with her estimate. i dont know which one i have but it's got 8 squares. i just did a count of 84 records in one square. i don't know about 2000 records -- maybe, i saw dmr's expedit once and it had something mental like 25 sqaures. assembly is a breeze, just make sure you tape the ikea key to the back of it in case you ever have to move and disassemble.

Jon, I bought Ikea's Billy system with CD inserts that look great, but the inserts are being discontinued so they're off the web site and if you want them you should hop to it - call stores.

I've also had the Billy (which looks the same as Expedit, but 4 x 4 instead of 5 x 5) for about 5 years and it's held up great. I've disassembled and reassembled it over the course of various apartment/house moves and it's still completely sturdy.
Just to further recommend it's sturdiness, I removed the central vertical divider on the top shelf (the horizontal shelves are full length, the vertical ones are just shelf-height) to fit the turntable in there. I wouldn't recommend taking out too many of them, but that worked out quite well since placing the turntable on the top of the unit made it just a little too far out of view.
Also, the CD inserts may look a bit clunky in the store but do work great if you can still find them. They also hold smaller books very well.

I've moved with the Expedit twice, once taking it apart and putting it back together, another time just moving it whole and it's held up remarkably well. Also consider...the top can be used for storage. I have all these metal file holder rack type things that I put on top and use it to hold certain records...new purchases or stuff for a mix I want to do. Also a plant is on top of there.

Failing the Billy CD inserts mentioned above, there's also the Benno CD tower:

I found the Expedit fairly easy to assemble - took about 20 minutes.
― Davey D, Friday, 24 August 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
the benno seems really overpriced for the amount of storage you get (unless you buy the, ugh, white one). i bought a discontinued model from target that holds 400+ cds for five bucks less, that's what i need more of.
or maybe i should just face up to my compulsiveness and sell some stuff.

i bought 25 of those bags unlimited boxes because i had to go pick up, like, 8000 records in a uhaul truck and i knew it would make my life so easy. and it really did. and now i just empty them and fill them back up and i use them every day. should have done it sooner. 25 of their white boxes costs 120 bucks. just being able to stack 5 boxes of records on top of each other is such a space saver.

Question: how high do you guys usually stack these things? I mean the plastic corrugated ones, not the cardboard (though if anyone has those, please weigh in). I'm loath to put expensive / valuable records on the bottom of a stack of five and usually reserve the bottom two boxes for easily replaceable stuff like Bee Gees LPs and shit - is this unreasonable? Does Bags Unlimited have a max weight for on top of these babies, rather than just the max weight you can put inside them?
