Enter the 90s!
I sort of want to start all over with "Hits Album" comps instead, but I feel like I have to end the "Now" string, even though the quality of 90s chart music isn't even remotely up there with 80s chart music.

Have to vote for "Enjoy The Silence", but "Real Real", "This Is How It Feels", "Shine On", "Chime" and even "Kingston Town" are all great.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 25 August 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

there's loads of teh great chart hits in the nineties! you generalise!

Mark G, Saturday, 25 August 2007 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

This is one of the strongest comps yet! (though I'm talking with my nostalgia hat on a bit).
In the end "She-she-she Shine On"

DavidM, Saturday, 25 August 2007 07:21 (eighteen years ago)

please describe each track so i could make a decision w/o listening to this

First record I ever bought with my own money. It's still very strong and one of the most representative NOW comps. Definitely my favourite. So hard to choose. "Moments In Soul" is a great bit of smooth sample-house; Mantronix and Jam Troniks made a nice triumverate. "Kingston Town" is still one of UB40's best. Adamski's "Killer" is in there pre-Seal megastardom. I didn't really like the rock/indie stuff at 9 years old but House Of Love track is really really amazing. And of course there's Chime. I think I'm gonna go with "Shine On" though.

<b>Erasure : "Blue Savannah"</b>
This felt really mature and grown up when I was young. Very good tune.

<b>The Rebel MC : "Better World"</B>
Awesome slice of Brit-Hip-House with a wicked little bassline a go on.

<b>Paula Abdul : "Opposites Attract"</b>
This was that silly duet with MC Skatkat (who was rumoured to be MC Hammer). I like the cheesy lyrics in this "She makes the bed/And he steals the covers". It's a bit weird that Paula was so proud of her bestial instincts though.

<b>Beats International : "Dub Be Good to Me"</b>
OH NO! I totally missed this! I wish I'd voted for this. Best thing Norman Cook has ever done. A unique (for the time) mashup of the Clash, SOS Band and that Ennio Morricone (I think) thing. Take flight, bosswalk, jam nitty gritty, you'rew listening to the boys from the big bad city - this is JAM HOT!

<b>UB40 : "Kingston Town"</b>
Really pleasant bit of Reggae-Pop that appeared just before UB40 became absolutely nauseating. Boring black and white video, typical of the time.

<b>Candy Flip : "Strawberry Fields Forever"</b>
A canny baggy cover of the Beatles classic. Released as a double A-side with "Penny Lane", I remember at 9 years old thinking Candy Flip had got away with murder. I later found out the meaning of a cover version and that yes, they do exist.

<b>Tina Turner : "I Don't Wanna Lose You"</b>
Meh. Not at all her best song.

<b>Phil Collins : "I Wish It Would Rain Down"</b>
Pitifully dull cod-gospel bullshit.

<b>Happy Mondays : "Step On"</b>
YEAH! Great baggy stuff. Even as a kid who only got off on Bleep-Techno and comedy dance tracks about the Thunderbirds, who couldn't love a song about twisting a melon?

<b>Primal Scream : "Loaded"</b>
Very confusing for me as a child. Love it now.

<b>Depeche Mode : "Enjoy the Silence"</b>
I only realised how amazing this song is (def one of my fave DM tracks) until I was about 18 so I can't really comment.

<b>Jesus Jones : "Real Real Real"</b>
Nice rock/dance dirge.

<b>Inspiral Carpets : "This Is How It Feels"</b>
Poignant lyrics, lovely Hammond sounds. The Inspirals are sadly forgotten today.

<b>The House of Love : "Shine On"</b>
I voted for this, but I should've voted for Beats International. This is a wonderful bit of Shoegazey stuff with an amazing coda and chorus.

<b>Faith No More : "From out of Nowhere"</b>
Not FNM's best song, but still really fit.

<b>The Quireboys : "Hey You"</b>
Terrible name for a band. This is cobblers really. The arse end of hair metal but with a bit of Rolling Stones chucked in.

Technotronic feat. MC Eric : "This Beat Is Technotronic"
Technotronic may have certain flaws, but this is great! How many singles did this band ever release?

Lonnie Gordon : "Happenin' All over Again"
Meh. Rubbishy diva-style house-pop.

49ers : "Don't You Love Me"
I think this is the only one I don't remember.

Jimmy Somerville : "Read My Lips (Enough Is Enough)"
Very catchy to me when I was 9.

Cliff Richard : "Stronger Than That
Fucking nobrot.

Jam Tronix : "Another Day in Paradise"
Better than the Phil Collins version. Take that as you will.

JT & The Big Family : "Moments in Soul"
Really groovy Italian house with all the classic early-90s samples ("Ah Yeah" etc) rolled into one.

Mantronix feat. Wondress : "Got to Have Your Love"
The nifty bassline is one of my alltime faves, more recently covered by Liberty X. Not much of a song in this late-period Mantronix track though.

Bizz Nizz : "Don't Miss the Party Line"
Daft, reedy faux-rave with suitably crap euro-rapping. Sounds like an advert for a gay chatline.

E-Zee Posse featuring MC Kinky : "Everything Starts With an 'e'"
Yeah this is amazing. Whatever happened to that MC? She was on this unabashed ecstasy anthem and that dodgy ABBAesque thing Erasure did and then disappeared. "E comininstrang, C comininstrang, DJ long J long" who fucking knows what she was saying? "What planet are you on? Planet ecstasy/Who do you know? No one/Take a trip with me". Pure LOLZ

D-Mob featuring Nuff Juice : "Put Your Hands Together"
See Bizz Nizz - Party Line. I barely remember anything about this song.

Adamski feat. Seal : "Killer"
You know, even though I was a huge fan of Adamski when I was a kid (yes I was weird), I always found this track a bit dreary. Never liked Seal's voice at all. That said, this is still an anthem.

Orbital : "Chime"
Speaking of anthems though... unfuckablewith

Tongue 'n' Cheek : "Tomorrow"
Can't remember the song so well but one of the band members had ridiculous fold out sunglasses. I get mixed up with these and that band Soho who only had one hit before being banned from TOTP for having a risque sticker on a guitar or something.

Electribe 101 : "Talking with Myself"
Moody pop house (lots of that on here) with Billy Ray Martin on vocals. Not too bad.

Sydney Youngblood : "I'd Rather Go Blind"
Well it's just Sydney Youngblood doing his usual thing.

At the time, I think I'd have almost preferred those Phil Collins/Cliff Richard/etc. tracks. Today I obviously don't. Phil Collins has been involved with a lot of really, really great music. Even as a soloist in the 80s. But "I Wish It Would Rain Down" is a really sad number, sounding way to much like "Wish You Were Here" and showing someone on the way down artistically. Even Eric Clapton providing guitar cannot save it.

And as for those techno/house tracks that I hated at the time, there are at least several that I kind of like by now. Plus my Britpop phase later on secured the likes of House Of Love, Inspiral Carpets and Jesus Jones (well, Primal Scream too, even though this is one of their least song-oriented moments) mean more to me now than they did in early 1990.

"step on"... you're twistin' my melon man!
