And why don't more of them do it? All that spring to mind are Simon Gallup and gthe Cocteau Twins dude. High notes with effects and rhythmic emphasis.

Curtis has turned me on to this French band called Asylum Party, and there are some tracks where they sound Hooky-ish.

Lowlife maybe?

Does Simon Gallup play on the Glove album?
nope. possibly a mix of Severin and Smith though (the latter, at least through the early 90s, did his songwriting on six-string bass.)

The Minutemen copied(?) it a bit on "Three-way Tie for Last".

Wire, but that isn't really "copping" because it was more the other way round

Weird nobody mentioned The Cure yet. "In-Between Days" is sooo New Order.

Don't think I agree w/Galaxie 500, since Naomi's thing lacks rhythm and really is kind of different.
But the Luna track "Astronaut" steals it blatantly, and it works nicely.

I almost posted Galaxie 500, as I once read an interview with Naomi in which she tells a story about giving bass guitar lessons a try; in brief, she played a recording of some Joy Division song in order to give the instructor an idea of what kind of music she enjoyed or wanted to play, whereupon the instructor laughed and said something to the effect of "that's not real bass-playing"...if I recall correctly, that constituted her first and only lesson.
The interview appears in some "women in rock"-themed book which came out circa mid to late-'90's...maybe somebody here knows what I am referring to and can relate the anecdote in a more precise fashion than I did.
But, you're right, her thing is different. For the most part she played more of a floating melodic thing, rather than being anchored in Hook-style grooves.

ha, my cousin had a similar guitar-lesson thing back in the late eighties.
guitar teacher: "so, what do you want to play like?" [cousin puts on "psychocandy"] [guitar teacher leaves, for ever]
anyway ... the mkI beloved are the most obvious example of the slavish new order-copying thing (seek out the awesome "where it is" compilation for myriad goodness). depeche mode's "enjoy the silence" deserves a mention (it's not a bass, but hey) ... and one day i'll have to play some of you the stuff i was doing about seven years ago. heh.

i'm sure i've had this discussion round these parts before, but i can't find any trace of it. i did find this thread, though, which is quite interesting in parts.

Theres a song by college-rock lovers the Oxford Collapse that has a pretty mighty chorused bassline that fans of Peter Hook should enjoy, you can download it from their website:
