Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's like Keane and The View had a lovechild then dropped it down five flights of stairs.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

they sound like the feeling with jokes, and i'm sure that can't be a good idea.

mind you, they do have a song about michaela strachan...

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I lasted 1.5min of that youtube video. Fucking mediocre bollocks.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god, they're doing an instore at the local indie soon. I had to double take when I saw a sign outside saying "SCOUTING FOR GIRLS IN STORE. I'm not going.

Okay, just heard it. I nearly chucked my computer out the window, then realised it would be easier to hit the back button.

something has united dom and DL, it must be pretty comprehensive. alas, this work computer doesn't have flash, so i'm spared. i can only imagine the worst, though.

Commented on it, har. +1ed it from my other account too.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

If you want to know what it sounds like, Louis it's basically someone failing to do an impression of him out of Maximo Park over this shit shit shit shit shit shit piano-led pop-punk thing. The chorus goes "She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's so luv-a-ly/She's pretty/twitty/this song's so shitty/someone block my face up with a pillow full of sick" (I wish). And then surprise surprise, she's got some boyfriend or other. Then there's a line where the singer wonders what the object of his desire looked like ten years ago. Considering he's probably in his early 20s, this is grounds to have his cock and balls kicked off by Eric Cantona. Mind you, he's probably safe since the "girl" in the video looks like she ought to be on some kind of MILF site. Then there's another bit where he sings: "I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/I think that you are luv-lay/Somebody shove a rusty telescope up my waste gate NOOOOW".

the next grozart, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

It's basically an emasculated, feeble britishes-indie version of Bowling for Soup's "Girl all the bad guys want".

Pashmina, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

If it's supposed to be a joke, it's not funny. If it's supposed to be serious then god help them.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

She's pretty/twitty/this song's so shitty/someone block my face up with a pillow full of sick

"London indie-pop trio Scouting for Girls are lifelong
friends Roy, Greg & Pete, who formed in 2005. The name
is both a cheeky pun and a beautifully rounded image;
infused with the nostalgia of innocent childhood and
boyish adventure, yet suggestive of maturation towards
experience, adulthood and disillusionment. Inspirational,
quirky, escapist, and friendly, their music is unashamedly
nostalgic, mottled with loss, disillusion and a poignant
lamentation for innocent past times.
Scouting For Girls debut album is packed with potential
hits including current single 'She's So Lovely' plus stand
outs 'Keep On Walking', 'James Bond' and 'Elvis Ain't Dead'."

xpost: no, clearly a repetitive 'orchestral' shitfest of the most terrifying kind

or a two-minute song with a three minute silence and then a hilarious 'message from the band'

*checks*

oh! they've cut if from the final album. wonder why...

CharlieNo4, Friday, 31 August 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

would be *genuinely* impressed with a michaela tabb tribute song

Just got offed, Friday, 31 August 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

you really need to see these lyrics:

i turned on the telly
when i got home from school
you were there in your wellies
and a yellow kagoul

you opened my eyes
to the birds and the bees
i loved you so on the really wild show
on the bbc

michaela strachan, you broke my heart
michaela strachan, you tore me apart
michaela strachan, you broke my heart
when i was 12...

want any more?

Is "indie-pop" the new "emo" for abused genre names?

Colonel Poo, Friday, 31 August 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

"The name is both a cheeky pun and a beautifully rounded image; infused with the nostalgia of innocent childhood and boyish adventure, yet suggestive of maturation towards experience, adulthood and disillusionment."

Sorry PR folks, the name can only be described as utter wank. Why? Because in the UK there's no such thing as Girl Scouts... they're Girl GUIDES. What you've done is try and shoehorn an existing piece of wry humour (e.g. Powel's book was called "Scouting For Boys"/scoutmasters are notorious child abusers) into something that totally misses the point. It attempts to say "we want to be funny and camp (pun intended) - we're a bunch of cheeky lads - definitely not pedos."

Shame, at least if they were "that pedo band" there'd be something to distinguish them from the other faces in the sea of Anglo-dross that they're flailing about in.

(FWIW I've not even bothered to click the link or listen to their music, so please tell me if my snap-judgement of the band is woefully wrong.)

one year passes...

‘The Light Between Us’ is an album full of love songs recorded in 10 studios across the world with 5 producers, and has been 2 years in the making. Roy Stride comments on the beginning of the recording process saying: "We wanted to make an album with a concept behind it, we tried but the songs were rubbish, so we decided to write an album of singles instead!”

The eight months Scouting For Girls spent in the studio also produced some surprises. The album’s beautiful title track is a startlingly sparse ballad that lasts just over a minute, includes two great train metaphors (“There’s a light in this tunnel/And I think it’s a train” is one) and shows a new, soulful side to Stride’s vocal. The singer’s favourite song is album closer 'Make This One Last', a stunning, strings-soaked ballad that proves SFG can do tender slow songs without sounding soppy.

Best friends Roy, Greg and Pete have a plan to kickstart the British summer with their new single 'Summertime In The City'. A classic Scouting For Girls smash it is three minutes of boisterous pop, witty lyrics and a chorus built for chanting back celebrating good-for-the-soul, shorts and shades days with burping brass, Blur-like bass, pounding piano and a hooky demand that it doesn’t rain.

Stride says “I’m counting on the song bringing the sun out. Imagine it as a telethon. The more people play it, the more the sun will shine. If it’s a hit, we’ll reach our target of endless glorious days. We could end up with an Indian Summer that lasts until November.”

I remember the year they played Glastonbury around the time their first album was out, my uncle was sat in his house watching the coverage on TV. "These don't seem too bad," he said to himself as they launched into the first song, much to my disgust. He took his eyes off the TV for about 10 or 12 minutes while he had a conversation with someone, during which they'd played something like three or four songs, and when he finally started paying attention to it again, this look of confusion came across his face. "Is this still the same song?". I was laughing my tits off!

Can’t wait!

I am the stranger, killing the Boer (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 25 May 2025 23:57 (ten months ago)

The nostalgia cycle is so strange. And it feels like it's lengthening?

The rest of the bands at the festival were cover bands. It was not a music festival, it was a 'foodie festival' whatever that is. Of the bands we suffered through, one did 60s rock, the next 80s synthpop. So we were drifting round the local garden centre first to the Stones and the Animals then to Soft Cell and The Buggles.

The gap from (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction to Everybody Wants To Rule The World was 20 years. But the gap from Tears For Fears to today is more like 40 years. Is the widening nostalgia gap due to the idea that 20 years ago was rubbish like Scouting for Girls? But then again from the (audible) reaction of the crowd, people were responding enthusiastically.
