Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

Exhausting. I haven't heard more than about 5% - 10% of these jammies.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm more disengaged with what's coming out this year than I have been for several years, but I'm fairly happy with the salsa nominations. Arroz con Habichuela is pretty good (love the title song). I haven't heard the others, but I've liked some tracks from the Tito Nieves album (even if the overall sound is so lazy and formulaic). They are good songs to begin with though. Also, that Issac Delgado/Victor Manuelle collaboration grew on me a little while I was on vacation out in ABQ. I haven't heard the whole album. (And I've heard nothing from the new Andy Montanez or Willy Chirino, although I have no interest in the latter anyway.)

In "Best Contemporary Tropical Album," I would predict it's between Aventura and Oscar D'Leon. I don't think Albita has a very high profile these days. Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz are a little too esoteric. (How many people who aren't salsa fans, and specifically, aren't really into Puerto Rican salsa, are going to know them?) However, I don't know who Nino Segarra is, so I might be missing another contender.

Best merengue: presumably it will be either Elvis Crespo or Juan Luis Guerra. (The other acts are big, but aren't going to have the crossover audience.)

Urban album will probably go to Calle 13 again, pissing off Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

(Also note the absence of Spanish Harlem Orchestra heheheh. Not that Latin Grammy nominations prove anything, but I still find it perversely gratifying.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

Hopefully those of you who know the other stuff will comment on it.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

(I don't want this to be one of *my* threads. But in that case I should probably stop adding pointless posts to it, eh?)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 03:44 (eighteen years ago)

Brasileira — Ao Vivo
Margareth Menezes

I have an album from hers on vinyl I think from the 80s. I haven't listened to her since then. I guess she's still active in Brazil.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 30 August 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

Rockist, you have a serious hate-on for SHO that I still just don't get. I can understand not liking them all that much, but you kinda sound like they shot your grandma or something.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 30 August 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

It's not SHO's fault they're the salsa group most promoted to Anglos (although I think RS just does not like their music as much as that of salsa groups marketed to Puerto Ricans). But of course, I sometimes snear at Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings because they're the retro soul group that's marketed to indie-rockers.

I was gonna review this vallenato group live when I saw an ad for their gig in a local DC Spanish newspaper. But then they couldn't get visas in time and the tour got cancelled. I saw a youtube video or 2 of 'em but never heard the cd.
Son...Para El Mundo
Jorge Celedón y Jimmy Zambrano
[SonyBMG Music/Norte]

curmudgeon, Thursday, 30 August 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

I thought SHO's new album was lifeless and I'm tired of all the nonsensical hype around them. Maybe SHO is my Coldplay? And to some extent it is their fault how they are marketed, because some members are kind of involved with all of that.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to see Album of the Year go to Alejandro Sanz. I'd also like to see Mala Rodriguez beat 'em all for Urban Album. Calle 13 can have Best Urban Song, though; "Pal Norte" is one of the best tracks on RoV. I'd like to see Miranda! win Best Group, just 'cause the only other nominee I've heard is La Quinta Estacion, and they're awful. That Sones de Mexico Ensemble album that's nominated in Best Folk is terrific, though I'm putting my money on Mariza, 'cause people have heard of her. I would love to see Dafnis Prieto win Best New Artist, but he's a Latin jazz drummer, so good luck with that. Best Rock Album, I'd be fine with Panda or Rabanes. And as long as Aterciopelados walks away empty-handed, I'm cool. I hate their last record; it was watery hippie bullshit.

unperson, Thursday, 30 August 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'd love to see Mala Rodriguez beat them all as well, as there are some real duds on that Calle 13 album - plus she's even on the best track on RoV.

danzig, Thursday, 30 August 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

the thing is though that SHO is barely barely known outside, like, this thread. but whatevz.

in brazilian rock, i'm voting for Skank, they do pretty psychedelic harmonites.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 30 August 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

the thing is though that SHO is barely barely known outside, like, this thread. but whatevz.

Hahaha. Their are also salseros who should know better who talk them up (on more specialized boards and whatnot), plus they do get a lot of coverage in the "world music" press (especially compared to other salsa bands).

I'm pretty sure I saw Dafnis Prieto perform with Elio Villafranco a while back, and he's a hell of a drummer (regardless of my overall feelings about Latin jazz).

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

in a survey of 100000 Americans, how many of them would have ever heard of Spanish Harlem Orchestra, like five? and if other salsa bands are lesser-known than SHO, that's marketing, not musical capitulation

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Did I say anything about musical capitulation?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard a lot of salsa. For me, most of Spanish Harlem Orchestra's music just sits there. It may tick off various things on the salsa dura checklist, but it lacks that certain something.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Bump. (Sorry to always be droning on about the poor Spanish Harlem Orchestra.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 1 November 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

To remind myself (and all of us) that:

The 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, set for November 8 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, will be broadcast live on the Univision Network from 8 - 11 p.m.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 1 November 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm much more excited about possible performances than I am about the actual award outcomes.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 1 November 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Me, too.

unperson, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

I was on vacation when this thread happened. What I would have said had I been there is that Malamarismo doesn't hold a candle to Residente o Visitante. Yes, Mala Rodriguez is on what is probably my favorite RoV track, but that track is significantly better (to my ears) than anything on Malamarismo.

I listen to Malamarismo at work, because it's basically anodyne. It's not bad at all, but it doesn't get in the way of anything else.

Vornado, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

Malamarisimo is...weird. The aesthetic of about half the record seems pitched about halfway between grime and Dillz/Madlib art-thump, but much more shiny and poppy than either. The rest is kind of a grab bag.

I actually think the Calle 13 album might be my favorite of this year. The Mala and Yankee albums are good-not-great. The Ivy Queen is rather boring. Are Orishas any good?

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

The opening act is quadruple nominee Ricky Martin with the Blue Man Group. . .

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

haha, Brilliant bit of casting.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

"Dillz" should be "Dilla". Correcting your posts a week later: C/D?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

I like the Calle 13 cd also, even if it's a bit uneven(with some annoying cuts).

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

It is a bit uneven, but damn those heights. The only cut that annoys me at this point is "A Limpiar el Sucio", mostly because Residente seems to think the best way to convey aggression is to ignore the beat. (which is a problem with about a quarter of their first album and luckily reduced to one song here)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

A couple of the songs that annoyed me at first, namely "Uiyi Guaye" and especially "El Avion Se Cae", have grown on me a lot. The latter is at this point probably one of my favorite songs on the album. Psychadelic surf-electro = A+

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

Are Orishas any good?

Yes. They do Cuban hip-hop (maybe you know that much). I think their rapping style tends to be a little dated sounding (and probably would be even more so to someone who actually follows hip-hop, instead of someone like me), but overall, their sound works pretty well.

Search "Barrio." In general, A Lo Cubano from 2000 is pretty good.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, thanks.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, also "La Vacuna," from El Kilo, I know I like that one.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

I was looking at Billboard magazine at Border's yesterday and columnist Leila Cobo offered her predictions. But now I can't remember most of them or find them online! She predicts a Calle 13 win I remember that (based on the electorate). But yeah the performances should be more interesting than the ballots.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Gotta remember to tape this. No mention of it in my newspaper tv guide.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

(no bother, I'll prob. end up just looking up the performances on youtube)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 8 November 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

The show is Celebrando Nuestra Musica.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is sponsored by Dos Equis tonight.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a Corona man. (Actually, I like Sol better, but can't always find it.)

The Reverend, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

Heineken wants a big share of that Latino market.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

Daddy Yankee was a bit uncharismatic (and that's one of the songs from his most recent album that I like).

Mostly it's kind of meh this year. I do like the touch of including Las Vegas show-girls.

Last year in NYC things really went wrong for the salsa segment, thanks to Willie Colon dropping out at the last minute, basically.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

This year is boooooooooooooooring.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

Why don't they just call it the Mexican Grammys?

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

hahahahahahahahahaha

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

Juan Luis Guerra thanks Jesus every time.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think an increasing number of Latinos are Christians these days. There was an article about that. :)

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have this nervous feeling that they are going to leave Ivy Queen until the end, and then cut off her performance. Or she has already stormed out of the building. They aren't even announcing her name any more when they say what's coming up, which is weird. She will have a hard time following up the Calle 13 performance. (Was Visitante on the stage at all for that?)

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

Kinky was a nice jolt of energy.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

Who won the salsa album award? I think that must have been one of those merely announced categories, without a presentation. How humiliating.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

It was El Gran Combo's Arroz Con Habichuela, which is a pretty good album.

For One Dominican Songwriter, Top Music Honors
By JON PARELES

Juan Luis Guerra, a songwriter from the Dominican Republic, was the big winner at the eighth annual Latin Grammy Awards last night.

His “La Llave de Mi Corazón” (“The Key to My Heart”) was named album of the year as well as best merengue album; its title track, a cheerful song about a caller to a radio station’s romantic advice show, was named record of the year, song of the year and best tropical song. The album also won an award for audio engineering.

In an acceptance speech, Mr. Guerra spoke about the damage done to the Dominican Republic by Tropical Storm Noel, saying, “We are a strong and valiant nation.”

The Dominican Republic is only part of the far-flung coalition represented by the awards: From Spain to Argentina, Brazil to Puerto Rico, Portugal to Mexico. At the Latin Grammy Awards, which were telecast from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas by the Univision network, performers did a lot of geographical roll calls, name-checking as many countries as they could fit over a beat.

Ricky Martin, who started the show dancing through his “La Bomba,” won the best male pop vocal album award. In his speech, he called for more unity among Latin countries and urged people to learn English but also keep speaking Spanish.

The Puerto Rican reggaetón duo Calle 13 won the award for best urban music album with its ambitious, innovative “Residente o Visitante,” which has immigration issues, among other things, on its mind. The duos’s rapper, Residente, pointedly thanked the many Latinos working in the United States, from construction workers to doctors.

Calle 13 gave the most explosive performance of the telecast. Sharing the stage with Orishas — a Cuban hip-hop group now based in France — and with drummers from the Las Vegas production of Stomp and with Arauco Indians from Colombia, it delivered a frenetic, percussive performance of its song “Pal Norte,” about crossing borders, legally or not. “Pal Norte” was named best urban song.

The duo’s producer, Visitante, said in his speech that music and business should be kept separate. Two other reggaetón acts, Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen, also had snazzy production numbers.

The Latin Grammys face a commercial fact: In the United States, by far the most consistently popular Latin music is rooted in Mexico. Mexican performers dominated the first part of the program: the singer Pepe Aguilar, who won the best ranchero album award, appeared with both a mariachi band and a banda (brass band) and sang about being “100 percent Mexican.” The winner of best pop album by a duo or group was the Mexican group La Quinta Estación, which belted a power-ballad medley. The best new artist was the pop-rock duo Jesse & Joy, from Mexico City.

While most of the show’s 48 awards were given before the telecast, Mexican music awards got plenty of air time. The award for best banda album went to Los Horóscopos de Durango, a rare banda with women as singers. The rock category had winners from Panama (Los Rabanes) and Argentina (Fito Paez, Gustavo Cerati).

Europe also had winners. Italy was represented when Laura Pausini won the best female pop vocal album award; she thanked Luciano Pavarotti, and sang a duet with Andrea Bocelli. Manu Chao, born in France but multilingual in his songs, won best alternative song for his “Me Llaman Calle” (“They Call Me the Street”).

The best alternative album was by Aterciopelados, from Colombia. In Brazilian music, the songwriter Caetano Veloso won two awards: best singer-songwriter album for his “Cê” and best Brazilian song for a song from that album. Other Latin Grammys for Brazilian music went to Lenine, Lobão, Zeca Pagodinho, Daniela Mercury, Cauby Peixoto and the collaboration of Leny Andrade and Cesar Mariano. In the tropical categories, which cover salsa, winners included Oscar d’Leon, from Venezuela, and El Gran Combo and Bobby Cruz, from Puerto Rico.

This year’s awards added a separate principality to the Latin coalition: Las Vegas. At times, the city received as much attention as the music, with jokes, video clips and omnipresent showgirls. Las Vegas has been making itself a magnet for awards shows, lately the MTV Video Music Awards. By now, the Vegas catchphrases about winners and luck are growing shopworn. And for Latin music — which is never short on sequins or hip-swiveling — Las Vegas glitz can be downright redundant.

I like Juan Luis Guerra's music despite his ocassionally preachy Christian philosophizing. And yea, I think some of you folks don't like his music either (but he won me over when I saw him live).

I forgot to tape the show, and just saw the very end after I came home from seeing Vieux Farka Toure and Tinariwen from Mali live in DC (a pretty good if not amazing show)

My impressions of the show.

So you hate Ruen Blades now?

merengue, for the most part, is vulgar, ass-shaking music made entirely out of Casio presets

Talk about "WTF". There's a ton of merengue that has nothing to do with Casios, though these days it tends to mostly stay in the DR.

And I'm sure the perfomers had a big hand in the Los Vegas show style exotica surrounding them.

The description of Daddy Yankee was apt though.

I don't hate Blades. I'm just saying Guerra manifests the worst aspects of Blades - the preachiness and faux-populism. Plus his music is fucking boring, which Blades' work at least usually isn't.

I agree that JLG is boring. I'm not sure his populism is really feigned though, but it's hard to tell without understanding his lyrics. Lots of people definitely buy into his poet of bachata schtick.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 9 November 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Metal and jazz and horn-filled salsa fan Unperson not liking straight-forward bachata dance beats -- That's consistent with his music tastes. Guys, my Spanish is poor, I like JLG's bachata beats and his vocal melodies. I'm not gonna win you guys over but that's ok--are tastes vary.

But shouldn't we be giving Jess and Maura at idolator a hard time for not mentioning these awards while live-blogging the country ones (I can run multiculti complaints into the ground !). Or maybe not, since RS did a nice job of live-blogging it here.

Email sent to Jess & Maura.

I'd say I did a very poor job of live blogging, but I wasn't interested enough in most of the show to be bothered.

The one pick I felt qualified making was Alacranes over Horoscopos for Banda album, and Horoscopos goes and wins! I'm completely disillusioned with the whole process. I agree that Horoscopos maybe sound better in theory, with all their Cyndi Lauper covers and their hotness, but Alacranes have more inventive arrangements. Horoscopos always end up sounding dry and samey.

Also, the Orishas album from 2005 is very good--I top-tenned it in Pazz/Jop. And I just listened to that Spanish Harlem Orchestra CD, and it does sound flat, like a supper club. You can basically read the horn charts as you listen.

Leila Cobo seemed to be expressing some unhappiness with the Latin Grammys process in Billboard, and folks have complained for years about the electorate for the other Grammys, so the same problems may exist here as well.
