I just realised there's a big jazz festival here this weekend, but I don't know much about anyone who's playing. The main lineup is:

riday, August 31, 2007
5:00-5:50pm - Robert Irving III: "The Works of Thelonious Monk"
6:00-6:55pm - Michele Rosewoman and Quintessence plus Guests
7:10-8:10pm - The Latin All Stars: "A Tribute to Hilton Ruiz"
8:30-9:30pm - Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood

Saturday, September 1, 2007
5:00-5:50pm - Dan Trudell's B3 Bombers
6:00-6:55pm - The Cookers featuring Eddie Henderson, James Spaulding, Billy Harper, George Cables, Cecil McBee, David Weiss and Gene Jackson
7:10-8:10pm - Ernestine Anderson and Frank Wess
8:30-9:30pm - Charlie Haden and the Liberation Music Orchestra

Sunday, September 2, 2007
5:00-5:50pm - "Revisiting the Apex Club" with Kim Cusack and John Otto
6:00-6:55pm - Bill Dixon
7:10-8:10pm - Bobby Watson’s Horizon featuring Jeremy Pelt, Ed Simon, Essiet Essiet and Victor Lewis
8:30-9:30pm - Mingus Big Band

Aargh I clearly hit return when I thought I'd hit backspace - I didn't realise this one had posted :-(

I'd be way into the Liberation Music Orchestra, Bobby Watson's band (because of Victor Lewis and Jeremy Pelt), and the Mingus Big Band.

Also I've got a slightly guilty thing for Scofield + MMW.

Depends what you like. Charlie Haden is a good bet. Mingus Big Band also. Medeski Martin Wood Scofield is a jammy funk organ thing - I like them ok but prefer them without Scofield. I like what I've heard of Bill Dixon. The Cookers sounds like a bunch of pretty good players but it could just be a wanky bebop blowing session kind of deal, which I don't care for too much.

Frank Wess is solid. I don't know what Bobby Watson's deal is but I'm guessing it's pretty straight ahead if Victor Lewis is playing drums

I've never heard of the guy doing the Monk tribute. Could be great or just mediocre.

The Hilton Ruiz tribute will probably be very standard latin jazz with good musicians so if you like latin jazz you'll like it.

I am most excited about this:

7:10-8:10pm - Ernestine Anderson and Frank Wess
8:30-9:30pm - Charlie Haden and the Liberation Music Orchestra

Never seen Charlie Haden before!! super psyched.

Also, on Sunday the Bill Dixon thing is not to be missed. He's actually playing with Rob Mazurak's group, which oughta be interesting as Mazurak's Underground ORchestra stuff more or less takes its sound from Dixon. I will probably stick around to see the start of the Mingus BB, but I'm gonna skedaddle early over to the Velvet Lounge for 8 Bold Souls with Kidd Jordan..

Apparently the Monk guy played on such albums as

I didn't notice that band with Cecil McBee and Gene Jackson at first, that could be cool, but yr right "the Cookers" sounds like blowing on standards.

Jordan, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, Robert Irving III is cool, I saw him a bunch of times playing with Malachi Thompson's (R.I.P.) groups

Dude! Philip Cohran is playing!?!

Bill Dixon seconded, and I'd probably check out that Cookers set because I have a huge weak spot for Eddie Henderson.

unperson, Thursday, 30 August 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Phil Cohran plays around here fairly often. well, often for someone of his age, but yeah.
