Sheena Easton - Classic or Dud?

Goodness, how has THIS not been asked?

Somewhere between classic and dud. "Morning Train (9 to Five)" and "For Your Eyes Only" are ok. The real fun starts in the mid-eighties, when she started showing some pink. Having heard "Strut" for the first time in 21 years tonight, I think it's a better song than "Sugar Walls"; it's all about the woodblock percussion (Rich Harrison, were you listening?) and horns. There's also a pretty good, Pointer Sisters-esque minor hit called "Do It For Love" from around the same time.

"U Got The Look" is a whole other story -- and thread.

"For Your Eyes Only" is one of the best ever Bond songs.

Okay I have the first four albums now (well, the first one is still in the post to me on vinyl, so I can't say I've heard that one yet) but this one is the very best album by far:
"Madness, Money & Music", 1982

Okay that last one is corny, but at least she's dressed nicely.

The Peel worship was always a bit puzzling for me, although it seemed proof of his eclecticism

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 14 December 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand. Are you saying Peel liked her, or did you mean to post on the Fall thread?

Cheap Uptown Dirt (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Sunday, 14 December 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

no mistake bimble, Peel really liked Sheena Easton

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 14 December 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Hahahah! OMG that made my day. Oh shit. LOL

9 to 5 was in his box of 142 favourite records. Quote from the Independent:

Another oddity is Sheena Easton's top three hit '9 to 5', which Peel loved so much he kept two copies. The DJ's widow said: 'That was big " he used to play it at all his gigs.'

Where Is The Love for "Modern Girl"?????

Piotr, Friday, 2 January 2009 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

Actually I'm not a huge fan of Modern Girl. In fact, I don't think I'm all that happy with the first album, period. At least You Could Have Been With Me has its moments.

Also here's something really funny I just noticed. The picture on the back sleeve of both albums shows her sitting in the more or less the same position, only her leg positions are reversed:

9 to 5 was in his box of 142 favourite records...9 to 5 is amazing

I was reading this last week, and I was all like "what the fuck, did Sheena cover the Dolly Parton song?" Then I noticed the title on a German '80s K-Tel comp this morning -- had no idea that "Morning Train" (which I've always loved) was originally called "9 To 5" in Europe. Joel Whitburn confirms, as I expected, that they changed the title to avoid confusion with Dolly's chart-topper from the year before.

dolly's is better :)

WOW WOW WOW WOW. Now that is some good trivia, thanks Chuck!

And more recently Glaswegians have shown their disapproval to stars such as Sheena Easton

Easton's much vaunted homecoming ended in disaster when she performed at the massive Big Day festival on Glasgow Green in 1990.

She was booed by tens of thousands of fans after introducing tracks in an excruciating mid-Atlantic accent.

The visibly shaken singer was showered with bottles, some containing urine, throughout her short, chaotic set.

Afterwards, she vowed never to play in Scotland again and has been as good as her word.

I doubt she could find a small enough telephone box to play in.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 January 2009 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

I am horrified to think that all that happened to her because she lost some of her Scottish accent for an American one? Is this what really happened or do I have it wrong?

Anyway, I've got the LP cover on my wall now that I posted above of her in that striped outfit, and I'll never take it down EVER.

"u got the look" = top 5 prince 4 me.

Sugar Walls outgrosses pretty much every Prince song. That song is still shocking 25 years later.

It's not better than "Strut" though.

She was good. She made the sweet-to-slutty turn more naturally and believably than Olivia Newton-John did.

haha whoa but Spotify just scrambled "Strut" about 1/2 through and played it by removing (I'd say) every other 1/2 second, so that instead of a 4 minute song it was a 2 minute song...but despite that discontinuity it still sounded like "Strut", just a hyperfast version. It was great!

I'll take "Sugar Walls" over "Strut", though.
