Going back to the industrial music of the late 70s, electronic music has proven it can exhibit as much aggression and rage as any guitar driven rock formula. Throughout the 80s and 90s many of us discovered electronic music via the angst-ridden sounds of Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy and labels like Wax Trax!, all of whom helped in redefining the role of technology in subterranean music culture. The explosion of digital technology has led to Hard Techno, Hardcore, Electroclash and most recently French Electro providing an outlet for extreme dance music that owes as much to the Sex Pistols as it does to Kraftwerk. With artist monikers like Truckasaurus, Kill Memory Crash, MOTOR, and Guns ‘n’ Bombs headlining the “Rage and the Machine” Showcase you can expect nothing less than an all out electro assault. Come early for a listening party of Modeselektor’s brand new album “Happy Birthday”.

AMBIENT LANDSCAPES: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF AMBIENT MUSIC

$20 adv.+ service fee / $25 dos
Doors open at 6pm - show goes until 10pm

HAROLD BUDD & ROBIN GUTHRIE LIVE (US - Los Angeles / UK)
BIOSPHERE LIVE (Norway)
RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI LIVE (US - Seattle)

'Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.' — Brian Eno (Music for Airports liner notes, September 1978) Harold Budd is also one of the very few who can very rightly be called an ambient composer. On the 1980 “Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror,” the piano maestro collaborated with British pioneer Brian Eno to produce one landmark album of the Ambient genre. The result, a sparse and tonal wash of piano and sonic treatments, introduced an organic, melodically rich blueprint and set the tone for their later collaborations. A contract with Eno’s Opal Records resulted in one of Budd's most glorious albums – “The White Arcades” (1988), recorded in Edinburgh with Robin Guthrie and Brian Eno.

Robin Guthrie is the co-founder of influential and prolific indie band Cocteau Twins. Long-regarded by many as the “father of shoegaze and dreampop,” Robin’s reverb-drenched guitar textures have had a significant impact on alternative music since the early '80s. Guthrie contributed to the sound and aesthetic of UK’s legendary 4AD label more than any other artist did, either as part of the Cocteau Twins or with This Mortal Coil, Wolfgang Press, and Dif Juz. Numerous acts have emulated his style and several others — including Felt, the Gun Club, Ian McCulloch, Chapterhouse, Ulrich Schnauss and Lush — have enlisted his production skills.

In 1986, Robin Guthrie – along with bandmates Simon Raymonde and Liz Fraser – recorded an album with Harold Budd titled “The Moon & The Melodies.” It would mark the beginning of a long-standing creative relationship between Budd and Guthrie. On Budd and Guthrie’s 2007 dual release “After The Night Falls” and “Before The Day Breaks” the two have once again collaborated on a masterpiece of sustaining guitar textures, minimalist piano composition and subtle beauty.

If Eno and Budd are the chief architects of Ambient Music, Biosphere’s Geir Jenssen is quite possibly its greatest innovator. Biosphere’s discography, which spans over fifteen years and over two-dozen albums, is a true testament to the composers’ phenomenal work ethic and ability to adapt over the years. His “Substrata” album for Eno’s All Saints Records is regarded as one of the all time classic ambient albums.

Opening the showcase is Seattle’s own Rafael Anton Irisarri, whose 2007 debut album “Daydreaming” on Norway’s Miasmah label has been gaining critical acclaim across the globe.

BENDER aka BYETONE LIVE (Germany)
PIXEL LIVE (Denmark)
KANGDING RAY LIVE (Germany)

Raster-Noton began in 1999 as a fusion of two labels, Olaf Bender’s and Frank Bretschneider’s Rastermusic label and Carsten Nicolai’s Noton label. The three audio and visual artists viewed the new found label as a creative platform for exploring the various intersections between pop, art, and technology. Together they study relationships, examining what exists between sound and space, the part versus the whole surrounding it, the result of the juxtaposition between absolute elements of the scientific and mathematical processes and the illogical elements of nature, and the beauty of irregularity within order. The label has managed to bring these concepts together, very successfully creating an austere digital sound and visual aesthetic that is at once both abstract and highly dynamic. At the heart of every Raster-Noton release is experimentation with sound, art and design in its purist digital form. Their most ambitious project to date was the legendary "20 to 2000" series, during which they released one 20 minute CD each month for a year leading up to the millennium, marking them as one of the first labels to bring together artists as diverse and pioneering as Coil and Ryoji Ikeda. With a dual focus on visual elements, Nicolai is an internationally renowned visual artists and Bender serves the Raster-Noton Creative Director, making award-winning design for the Raster print and music releases. Representing the label in an audio and visual showcawse at Decibel is co-founder Olaf Bender, also known as Beyotone, Danish composer Pixel and the label’s most recent addition, Kangding Ray.

2007 HEADFUK SHOWCASE / DB FINALE - MOTHERSHIP LABEL SHOWCASE

$15 adv. + service fee / $17 dos
Joint cover for Neumos, VIP Room and Moe Bar
Doors open at 8pm - goes until 1:45am

IN THE NEUMOS MAIN ROOM
WOLFGANG FLUR LIVE (Germany)
CHRIS DE LUCA vs. PHON.O LIVE (Germany)
FRIVOLOUS LIVE (Canada / Germany)
AAM LIVE (Mexico)
KRIS MOON LIVE (US - Seattle)
STRUGGLE DJ (US - Seattle)

Over the past four years, Decibel has carried on a tradition of choosing one showcase that simply cannot be categorized, which we aptly call “The Headfuk Showcase”. This year’s Headfuk Showcase is by far our most adventurous and ambitious showcase to date. Kicking things off are two of Seattle’s most respected dub aficionados, Dubstep pioneer DJ Struggle and Kris Moon, the latter of whom will be performing one of his legendary “Deep and Dubby” live PAs. From Jamaica we’ll be taking a trip to Mexico and the “Kraut-rock-tronica” of AAM whose recent release on Static Discos offers a dizzying array of instrumentation and influences ranging from Neu! to Aphex Twin. Following AAM is the Canadian expatriate Frivolous, whose found-sound electronic funk has won him massive praise and comparisons to artists like Herbert. Next up on the bill will be the German Crunk of former Funkstorung beat destroyer Chris De Luca and Shitkatatpult’s Phon.o. Combined the two will battle it out with a spirited live set of glitched out accapellas, booty bass and the filthiest break beats you’re likely to ever hear. Closing out the 2007 Headfuk Showcase is quite possibly electronic music’s most influential percussionist, Wolfgang Flur. This ex-Kraftwerk member (1973 to 1987) was responsible for constructing/engineering rhythms to the quartet’s most beloved classics, including “Trans Europe Express”, “Autobahn” and “Computer World / Numbers”, which was later sampled by Africa Bambatta on “Planet Rock”. Flur’s current performance includes many of these classics mixed together with vintage Kraftwerk footage, live dance performances and songs from is most recent project, Yamo which features Mouse on Mars. From Northwestern Dub, to Mexican Krautrock, to Canadian Funk, to German Crunk, to the godfather of electronic rhythm himself, this year’s Headfuk promises to be one hell of a finale.

IN THE VIP ROOM & MOE BAR
CLAUDE VONSTROKE DJ (US - San Francisco)
ITALOBOYZ DJ (UK)
MONTY LUKE aka ML TRONIK DJ (US - San Francisco)

2007 marks the launch of the San Francisco based experimental dance label mothership. Founded by Barclay Crenshaw, (aka Claude VonStroke) the concept for the label is to create a deeper more experimental techno based sound than the tech-funk sound of his other well-known label, dirtybird. With artists like Italoboyz, Samim and Lee Curtis producing for their first release, mothership is already turning some serious heads while burning up the club charts. Performing at the showcase is label boss Claude VonStroke, whose funk fueled productions and DJ sets have made him an icon amongst the underground dance community worldwide. Co-headlining the bill is the London based duo Italoboyz who have released on several labels, including Treibstoff, Einmaleins, Safari Electronique and Gumption. Their debut release for mothership, "Victor Casanova." has quickly increased their popularity as a production duo - not bad for only releasing music for two years. Starting off the evening will be the SF based Monty Luke (aka ML Tronik) who's been a staple in the San Francisco underground scene for years and is an artist on the second mothership release. A large portion of the money mothership earns will go towards helping music education programs in a school in downtown Detroit. Decibel is quite proud to be hosting one of the first showcases for this inspiring new label.

LOL @ Earplug from yesterday:

Seattle ranks a step above Milwaukee in international electronic-music cred.

jergïns, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.earplug.cc/137712

Trapped in the shadow of corporate "indie" overlords Sub Pop Records, Seattle ranks a step above Milwaukee in international electronic-music cred.

This sounds in-jokey since the piece seems chummy with Sean, so I'm not going to get worked about this at all but I'm sick to shit of any music article about anything electronic that comes from Seattle that doesn't start with some shit like "Despite Seattle's penchant for being the birthplace of GRUNGE...". I wish I could buy the whole target-audience-only-knows-for-Seattle-for-X-Y-and-Z argument, but fuck it. When does this stop? Even Sub Pop is sick of this shit. Fucking music journalists.

Miza Din II, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

well, the pacific northwest in general is hardly known for a strong electronic dance music scene.

pshrbrn, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, this is true. And I don't think the festival is trying to rewrite history either. I was just being bitchy going off on the tangent of lame writers who can't stop using the tired "grunge" thing mostly as a joke.

Imagine being the one person who's different the others at work, and the others are nice to you but won't stop pointing out how you're different every day, just because they think it's funny or something. It's like retarded high school bullshit. Like the one proud meat eater who can't stop poking fun at the one vegetarian. Something like that. That's how I see the whole Seattle/Grunge thing in the press right now.

Anyway I'll stop bitching now. I'm sorry.

Miza Din II, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

i think we've recently gotten a reputation for at least bringing shows to the northwest. still, there hasn't been that one break out artist from here to get me excited and root for. caro, jerry abstract, lusine, pronsato, they're all fine and good but nothing to shout from the rooftops about.

jergïns, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

what will the opening gala thing be like tonight, i wonder. i didn't get to go last year. heavy anticipation though. sherburne spins.

tip for those who haven't been to the Henry: seek out the James Turrell skyroom. it is amazing and worth your time.

jergïns, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

the simko/sherburne at the museum, under the turrell sky thingee(pictures here though not of the show) was totally great and fun. Simian Mobile Disco were alright. Switch was fucking annoying. Didn't see Diplo. Is this the thread where I talk to myself?

jergïns, Friday, 21 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Jergins, I only saw a part of the show at Neumo's because of work. And I am still at work. If only they could invent the four day weekend.

I saw Simian Mobile Disco who were fun.

I really liked Switch even if he did the aerobics thing too much and jerked off with the stutter knob too much.

I had to leave just as Diplo started. I got a text message from a friend telling me that he played Nirvana and Paul Simon! Dare I ask in what form this happened!

Miza Din II, Friday, 21 September 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

deej, Friday, 21 September 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

*Swoon* If only it was that Switch!

Miza Din II, Friday, 21 September 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Diplo last year in NYC and from what I heard he basically did the same thing last night (i.e. sucked), so I'm glad I went to the Orac showcase instead. Too bad about the glitch that marred the last choon in the Caro/Randy Jones set but he was in excellent form, singing live and being as much of a showman as you can behind a bunch of equipment. "My Little Pony" = totally rocked.

Matos W.K., Friday, 21 September 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Motor has cancelled their entire U.S. tour due to visa problems. :(

The Neumo's lineup tonight will have a new opener and every one else who was scheduled originally will move up an hour.

Miza Din II, Saturday, 22 September 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

good to know--thanks

Matos W.K., Saturday, 22 September 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Please take it from someone who saw them here before at the SIFF gig - Harold Budd & Robin Guthrie are more boring than watching paint dry. I was really surprised, and sorry.

Bimble, Saturday, 22 September 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

i heard this one's going to be different (i can't go though so whatever)

jergïns, Saturday, 22 September 2007 04:54 (eighteen years ago)

holy shit Jeff Samuel!

jergïns, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

who among us does not love some trainspotting? he actually played a song i know: cassy's somelightuntothenight right at the end. i Soooo wanted it to be the last song but he kept going so i left.

i looked up one of the barnburners from earlier in his set (lolo the one with actual vocals) and it's Brett Johnson & DJ Heather 'Everything's Electric (Mike Shannon dub).' Fuck, that one was a corker on that soundsystem.

(the downstairs at Neumo's is totally a firetrap and a sweatpit and a stinkathon but it does replicate the outlaw/illegal party feel pretty well, what with the exposed wires and weird sideroom. )

jergïns, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

Wolfgang Flur WTF. it was like a self-aggrandizing educational movie about your life with a poorly mixed sub-kompakt soundtrack. you are one weird dude. i would have felt worse for you if you hadn't kept flashing your own name on the screen.

(italoboyz were ok downstairs but jeff samuel still pwnd all)

jergïns, Monday, 24 September 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Samuel's set was one of the handful of A+ DJ sets I've ever seen/danced to.

Matos W.K., Monday, 24 September 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

i really wanted to go to this. every year it just seems to sneak up on me though and the airfare is ridiculous, etc, etc.
