where do they go
moving on their way
walking down the
highways, and the byways
where do they go
people with their
shy ways, and their sly ways

- hollies, 'look through any window'

this is a super corny, but possibly mildly diverting, list thread for songs that have windows in their lyrics. i have nothing better to do, so.

super bonus points for anyone who thinks of a cheerful song, since as far as i can think of windows always represent TEXTBOOK SAD PENSIVE TIMES along the themes of outsiderism (ppl looking in), voyeurism and isolation (ppl looking out), and, on happy occasion, crazed madmen trying to murder you (ppl looking to run the fuck away.)

Cleaning Windows by Van is pretty cheerful for him

sonofstan, Saturday, 1 September 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

flying lizards - the window
wire - the other window
cypress hill - from the window of my room
violent femmes - gone out the window
david essex - window (clearest of winners!!)
tom jones - looking out my window

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 September 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

duhhhhh how can i forget george formby straight away!!!!!!!

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 September 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

the formby of course, is a very creepy song indeed. key line: "one day i'm sure"

As soon as I saw this thread title, "Looking Out My Window" by the Jackson 5 got totally stuck in my head.

and what, Saturday, 1 September 2007 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

(heads to itunes smart playlist...)

Go Away from My Window, Country Teasers
Polygon Window, Polygon Window
Window Sill, Aphex Twin
Windowlicker, Aphex Twin
(no lyrics for above three, sosumi)
Windowstill, Arcade Fire

ledge, Saturday, 1 September 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

songs about window SHOPPING (50, hank williams and indeed aphex) i think i'll set aside for the moment. altho maybe they do trade in the same paranoia perhaps.

songs about rain on windows that are more about rain than windows are also disqualified.

George Jones - The Window up Above (more about adultery than Windows though)

sonofstan, Saturday, 1 September 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

cor, i feel like i've heard every second of the jackson 5 already without actually having heard it itself before now. i see they have a window shopping one too.

nilsson's 'open your window' is very happy. maybe ella fitzgerald's version tho.

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 September 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

no, the george jones is cool!! "you must have thought that i was sleeping / and i wish that i had been / but it's best to get to knoooow you / and the way your heart can sin"

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

like, none of them are actually about windows per se

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 September 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

like, none of them are actually about windows per se

slight derail.... are there any songs about Windows, the much loved operating system?

sonofstan, Saturday, 1 September 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

I guess "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window" is more about the doggy than the window. Or was it about LSD or Freudian theory or something?

My favorite U2 song in a decade: Window In The Skies

it is about keeping her lonely love occupied while she's gone, apparently. although only wikipedia has dared to presume it's so he doesnt "look for affection from another woman"

also the b-side was called 'MY JEALOUS EYES' hem hem

Creepy :

How much is that doggie in the window,
The one with the waggly tail?
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie's for sale.

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone;
If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome,
And the doggie will have a good home.

Repeat Refrain:

I read in the paper there are robbers
With flashlights that shine in the dark;
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark.

I don't want a bunny or a kitty,
I don't want a parrot that talks;
I don't want a bowl of little fishies
He can't take a goldfish for walks.

Tom Waits - Rosie "I'm sitting on a windowsill blowing my horn"

Thought it's honestly probably about masturbation.

Touche. But let the record show those were both most likely started on the weekend as well. Just because I'm not blameless doesn't make it any less an epidemic. Death to the mundane!

GBV - Smothered in Hugs

(chorus)
but i believed you
no need for further questioning
i'm gonna leave with you
you can teach me all you know
which way will we go now
on our trip to taller windows
i really don't know now
i really don't know

"just my imagination" - temptations / the rolling stones / et al

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 September 2007 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

At one time my choices of what to play used to be about what ws happening when I looked outside (sure that's true to many). BUT it only counted if there were raindrops on a window or a fierce thunderstorm, its just way that drops had when running into a grimy window. If it ws sunny it actually didn't matter as much (so yes to sad and pensive)

anymore 'window pa(i)ne' ones?!

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 September 2007 12:48 (seventeen years ago)
