Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

needs more lionrock

and what, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Note: Please don't put me in the "rock writers and the art of pretend forgetfulness" noize board thread for that last one. I honestly don't remember which of the three singles listed on wikipedia was the one I liked, and I would listen to iTunes previews, but iTunes is down right now.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

freestylers joint with the ragga dude on it was dope

where is DEATH IN VEGAS????

and what, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Would you go with "Rude Boy Rock" &w? for Lionrock?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

no, 'Fire Up The Shoesaw'

blueski, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Would you go with "Dirt" &w? for Death In Vegas?

Even when I heard em in the late 90s, I always thought they were a rock band for some reason...

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'd pick "Keep Hope Alive" instead of "Busy Child". Also, "Paupau New Guinea" instead of "We Have Explosive" and "Poison" instead of "Breathe".

omg DEATH IN VEGAS I'd forgotten them

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

i guess i'm not the only one having a lazy sunday

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

(I know it's not really sensible to call "PNG" big beat but I love that track.)

All three of the alternatives I mentioned were massive when they were out, so I don't see how they don't qualify as HITZ...?

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Something from the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty?

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Switch out Propellerheads' "History Repeating" with either "Bang On!" or "Velvet Pants", or maybe even "Take California" (their best track)

Stevie D, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

AND DON'T YOU DARE GET RID OF WE HAVE EXPLOSIVE

Stevie D, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't directed at you per se. Though I never actually heard PNG.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Monkey Mafia ft. Patra 'Work Mi Body'
Jedi Knights 'Catch The Break'
Death In Vegas 'Dirt'
Wiseguys 'Cowbuy 78' (or i suppose 'Ooh La La' or 'Start The Commotion' if u want it populist)
eta 'Casual Sub'
Freddie Fresh 'Chupacabra (Bassbin Twins mix)'
Bentley Rhythm Ace 'Woosh'
Mr Scruff 'Chicken In A Box'

blueski, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Also, how do you feel about "Right Here, Right Now" by Fatboy instead of "Rockafeller Skank"? And what about Oakenfold's "Ready Steady Go"?

Stevie D, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Switch out Propellerheads' "History Repeating" with either "Bang On!"

Good call.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Also, how do you feel about "Right Here, Right Now" by Fatboy instead of "Rockafeller Skank"

"Rockafeller Skank" is one of the 500 best songs ever written.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

lo fidelity allstars were underrated as fuck btw - me & my friend pulled that cd out a couple weeks ago & its all the way yoga flame hotness, drop any joint on 12" white label & hipster dance bloghouse heads would be buggin out

what about SPYBREAK by propellerheads?? it was in the matrix!!

and what, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

I was going to say "Bang On!" but I figured I'd already nitpicked three tracks already so I'd let someone else do it.

DOOD I LOVE "WE HAVE EXPLOSIVE" I JUST AM A WHORE FOR "PNG"

(xp: blueski brings up BRA! YAY)
(more xp: My Fatboy pick would probably be "Everybody Needs A 303".)

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

I was in a car with two of my friends a few months ago and "Battleflag" came on the radio. I turned it up and they "what the fuck?" and looked at me like I just put on Skrewdriver. :/

for "essential" chemical bros you need to go back to their dust brothers days, and pick one of these two:

"loops of fury"
"bug powder dust (dust brothers mix)" by bomb the bass

both from 1994

No Cut La Roc, Space Raiders, Midfield General ("Devil In Sports Casual" please)? No not very good Cornershop remix?

Also, "Bang On" suggestions are, uh, bang on. And my Chemical Bros pick is "Leave Home", and the only Fatboy Slim I want to hear ever again is "Everybody Needs A 303".

Am I allowed Fuzz Townsend - "Tasty Big Ed"? No? Then I would like Bentley Rhythm Ace - "Midlander (There Can Only Be One)" or failing that "Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out". (I would totally shoehorn All Seeing I's "Beat Goes On" or Moloko's "Flipside" on here too but obviously not really big beat.)

Ooh, good call on the Mekon. I wanted to suggest "What's Going On (Mekon)" with Roxanne Shante but it was a few years too late and I figured "Welcome To Tackletown" was probably not HITZ enough. Same for ETA - "Casual Sub" I guess though I love it. Does DJ Kool - "Let Me Clear My Throat" count? Probably not but I remember it being played a lot by big beat and dnb DJs.

Someone make this stuff cool again because I seem to have TWO copies of the unsaleably uncool Lo Fidelity Allstars On The Floor At The Boutique, and I put on CJ Bolland's "Analogue Theatre" recently and after being all "hey, this is still pretty good" and "so underrated due to ridiculous supposed Prodigy ripoff flak" etc I finally settled on "actually, no, I'm never going to listen to this again".

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 2 September 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

If we're sidehorning in Moloko, shouldn't it be "Fun For Me"?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 2 September 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Lo-Fis On The Floor At The Boutique features one Jackson & His Computer Band, in 1999! I've had it for years and still don't remember hearing about him until the M83 remix. Is there other 90s stuff out there? Was it wellknown at the time?

MY BEATBOX
Deejay Punk Roc? OTM! Awesomely chunky electroesque drum machine beats - first track to kickstart big-beat-becomes-nu-skool-breaks faction via Freq Nasty/DJ Scissorkicks etc? (Probably not, what do I know?) But maybe you wanted the LRD mix anyway.

If we're sidehorning in Moloko, shouldn't it be "Fun For Me"?
Yeah I guess except I forgot what it was called and prefer The Flipside anyway (plus I don't think anyone except me is and even I can't quite justify it).

Jacques Your Body too house? Sons of Silence - Bobby Dazzler = too thin?
I just remembered owning this The Knowledge webzine free CD, wonder if I can still find it? Oh my youth, etc.

a lot of big beat "isn't big beat", guess it's defined by labels and 'scene' and stuff. 'work mi body' is probably monkey mafia's bestest, but doesn't sound like many other big beat tracks.

MM's remix of st etienne's 'filthy' is awes.

Yeah, that comp has great stuff on it.

I may have already told this story on ILM , but my favourite moment in a club ever in itself validates Big Beat as a genre for me (against its many detractors).

It was at Happiness Stan's (four-room eclectic/drum&bass/big beat club in Smithfields/Jazz Bistro) and they played Santa Cruz (after Buffalo Springfield) and the entire room started pogoing madly, literally everybody leaping up and down, and bang in the middle of all this a couple were slow dancing and kissing, like the eye of a storm.

Cool!

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 3 September 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Depth Charge 'Five Deadly Venoms' also good (same beat as 'Song To The Siren'), and the Give Em Enough Dope volumes

blueski, Monday, 3 September 2007 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

I bought Disko Vixen for a pound in a charity shop the other day, and was going to start a Depth Charge/DC Recordings S&D, C or D.

Classic stuff, and then now he puts out Padded Cell and Emperor Machine and so on.
