how big an influence have R.E.M been on modern Americana / Roots music ( and Alt. Country)

Some journalist seem to claim that early REM bought a rootsy-ness back to underground/alternative US music (although surely Green on Red and the like were mining simliar veins earlier ). If so - would they then have been a big influence on later roots based styles ( for want of a better word) ?
