Som a few months ago, the papers were all full of some rediscovered folk singer, and now I can't remember who she was. Any ideas?

It wasn't Vashti Bunyan or Anne Briggs.

It definitely wasn't Judee Sill or Shirley Collins, I don't think it was any of the others either but 'wow' to all those esp Sybille Baier - where has she been all my life?

Apologies for the vague question, I should have paid more attention at the time I think.

It's Jim Ford.

Man, the other night I was in a bar, and the DJ was playing something pretty good, and a friend told me it was a reissue that had just come out, and it was really loud in the bar and I thought he said it was someone called "Jim Fool" - I've spent the last few days asking around if anyone has heard of "Jim Fool." Looks like Jim Fool is me.

anyone got the Bear Family Jim Ford set?

Karen Dalton, Karen Dalton. I got a burn of the Karen Dalton record. one of the strangest things I've ever heard. She can't sing a lick, but that's sort of the point and then you realize she's singing anyway and you wonder how to approach music like that. Her cover versions are wildly variable, like her take on "When a Man Loves a Woman" is atrocious but then the approach she takes has its defenders and think maybe you're being unfair. her take on "How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You," the Holland-Dozier-Holland number, is also atrocious. Her version of the Band's "In a Station" is weird. I can't figure out this music at all. Part of me wants to think that it's just another rediscovery that's really a hype for bored music fans like me, part of me thinks she was onto something. All I know is, her voice gets on my nerves but I kind of want to listen again. the papers were full of her recently. Linda Thompson seems to have licked her voice problem.

I think Dalton has a gorgeous voice, and she's a totally unique singer.

Yeah, man, really. Do you also think Fred Neil "can't sing a lick?"

I think it is Karen Dalton! Hurrah. Thanks to Mr Hal Jam and whisperineddhurt.

Just listened to some and, yeah it is an unusual voice but pretty amazing. Downloading now.

what's that record like?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 6 September 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't really delved into that Catherine Howe record too much, first song is nice but i was expecting something folkier, she's much more sophisticated/orchestrated/almost jazzy. not bad at all, something that will grow on me perhaps

yes! it's killer. the bonus tracks aren't quite up to the album standard but are definitely worth hearing. "i'm gonna make her love me" has been running through my head 24/7 for months now.
