Talk about the dude who fucking played bass on 'I Want You Back'.

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

Man, I've just been trying to learn something about him this weekend myself. Apparently his main instrument is tenor sax and he plays smooth jazz, although he usually supplies a little grit for the oyster.

That is crazy.

The only other thing I have to add is that I recently learned that another guy whose bassline is sometimes wrongly attributed to Jamerson is the guy who played on Al Wilson's "Show And Tell," a dude named Dennis Parker (He's name sounds like he should have played drums for Funkadelic)

I just cut-and-pasted this link from another tab I had opened this morning

I guess we should find one of those threads about Musicians Who Are Proficient At More Than One Instrument and put him there.

Even though I can't vouch for his sax playing, never having been aware that it was there.

It's weird that guys who can make some of the rawest shit also like to make corny smooth jazz records. I'm thinking of Donald Harrison, for one.

Billy Kilson (Dave Holland's drummer) too. You put them in a cool situation and they're amazing, but when left to they're own advices it's just awful.

I saw some of the Atlantic session cats- Richard Tee, Cornell Dupree, Purdie maybe - back around 1990 and it was pretty smooth and pretty corny.

I saw Billy Kilson with Kirk Lightsey and he was great.

I should have followed them after the show to the John Hicks memorial jam session they were going to, but I had to get up early the next day for some reason.

Isn't Wilton Felder one of The (Jazz) Crusaders?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

Felder is one of the Crusaders. I love seeing this thread because when I opened the Jamerson best basslines thread I looked to see if he did "I Want You Back." And dang if it wasn't Felder. Dang.

Apparently in the Crusaders, while Wilton was playing sax, the bass duties were handled by one Robert Popwell.
