i don't know what to call these guys. it's not like they have the same sound - i turn to broker/dealer when i need some reverby fix, egoexpress when i want a more kitbuilders sort of vibe - but both groups have an outsiderish, "live" feel about them. i'd say "indie techno" but that makes me think of enfeebled sing-y stuff like borneo & sporenberg, or some of the stranger bpitch sublabel stuff which while erratic and odd, and some of which i quite like, don't have the live propulsive feel of these two.
my focus on some genre appellation isn't so i can squeeze them into a box, it's that i'm not sure there is even other stuff like them really, and a name would imply that there is. especially egoexpress. man i love them so much. have you heard these groups? do you like them? what else should i listen to if i like these guys?

is broker/dealer the thing with craig finn from hold steady/lftrpllr?
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 23:30 (seventeen years ago)
i have no idea! the first thing i heard from them was "haulin' oats", which sampled "no can do", and then i heard "initial public offering" - their full-length - which is very low-key but REALLY grew on me after listening to it a few times.

Don't know if I've heard anything from Broker/Dealer other than "Boots & Pants" but that one's an absolute classic.

if you like broker/dealer, you could check out other early-ish releases on traum like this which is one of my personal favorites and gives a nice overview of a bunch of related artists all remixing one album by process who later went on to record as cosmic sandwich. speaking of, cosmic sandwich isn't too far off the mark either. check out triple r's friends, too, if you don't already have that. his mix for my best friend (vol 1) is worth searching out also.

I love Broker/Dealer; their 'IPO' lp is like the American Burger/Ink. In fact, just today it was that lp, followed by Triola's Im Funftonraum lp. Great. Hope B/D is working on a new record.
― nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 03:27 (seventeen years ago)
american burger/ink is so right on, kudos to you.
love these guys, wish they'd put out a new record because that record is so classic. they do a great DJ night and are super nice dudes which is always classic.

Yeah when IPO came out they were riding the "microhouse" wave at that point. I can't really think of any other act I would call microhouse now though.

"a piece of the action" on ladomat 2000 was the first thing i heard from egoexpress. i don't know what the sample is from - it sounds a bit steely dan-ish - but it's just a repetition of this live, lush, glorious shuffle vamp, which they manage to tweak so that it builds and builds and builds to an unsustainable euphoric climax, drops back down, and begins building again.
i guess one thing you could call the sound i'm looking for is "the ladomat sound". egoexpress' 2005 full length, hotwire my heart, is astonishing in its eclecticism. by the strictly specialized standards of most techno acts every song sounds like it could be from a different band, but there's a consistency of quality there. no song sounds like a throwaway.
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:25 (seventeen years ago)
Hot wire my heart was also issued as a double-cd which contains a few excellent remixes. The Lawrence remix of "Aranda" in particular is great.
Mense Reents' (half of Egoexpress) Aus Freien Stücken album from 2003 is also excellent. Lots of samples from some of my favorite records (Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Chills) are incorporated into its songs in a way that makes them surprising and instantly familiar at the same time. Highly recommended.

willem hooked me on that record, it's really great and I'm suprised its not better known.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 12:52 (seventeen years ago)
i like the egoexpress mix of 'aranda' better than the lawrence or isolee, but have heard nothing else by them.
i saw broker/dealer live once. i liked it. guess i should give 'ipo' a listen?
― one time, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
it was an easy record to take for granted when it came out, lots of things sounded like it, but it's held up a lot better than many other albums that seemed to make a louder splash at the time
