The Naked Truth by Lil Kim

RIP Alex MacPherson, hope you up in heaven letting St Peter know why it's OK to call black people "niggers"

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

say what you will about that album the joint with twista & bun is worth 5 mics even if every other track was court tv audio of kim's plea bargain

nation of millions is a classic album but does anybody actually listen to that now????

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest

Me Against the World by 2Pac

this is the worst album on the list

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

Worse than Stillmatic?

talrose, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Stillmatic = A-

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

Stillmatic's album title = D+

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest

this is the worst album on the list

-- and what, Wednesday, September 5, 2007 3:26 PM (6 minutes ago)

i'd listen to that before Fugees

am0n, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Eh, I loved Stillmatic when it came out, but many of the songs, particularly in the second half, sound pretty limp today, although the track with AZ is spectacular.

Me Against the World has some of 2Pac's best songs: the title track, "Dear Mama," "So Many Tears," "Fuck the World." 2Pac at his most vulnerable in many instances, and stellar production throughout.

talrose, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

hard but i voted DOC cuz i've been listening to it alot lately.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

PE beats Biggie and the Wu. would take the Score over at best all but a dozen of these.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

The Naked Truth! WTF?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

i voted the diary

me against the world isn't even close to the worst album on that list

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

i like the score more than the tribe record too

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

the 1st tribe record i mean

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Are these really the only 5 mic records?

I'm gonna vote for Breaking Atoms just so it gets a vote.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

the score is way better than the first tribe no contest.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

THE WALLET HAD CONDOMS IN, SO IF HE DIDN'T GET IT BACK HE WOULD HAVE DIED OF AIDS

Lifesavas get like three mics from me.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

First album gets three and a half.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I'm not saying Me Against The World is a bad album, I would just reach for it last on that list. Pretty much every album on that list is fairly excellent.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

NO 7 DAY-THEORY NO CREDIBILITY

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

How can I put this so nobody gets pissed off? It was rude so don't acknowledge it. How's that?

humansuit, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Death Certificate

Fugees are horrible, easily the worst thing on the list.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

I had no idea Straight Out the Jungle got 5 mics

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

Retroactive 5-mic. Source wasn't around in 1988.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

Fugees are horrible, easily the worst thing on the list.

you are from California

gabbneb, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Hating Fugees is the 2007 version of hating Arrested Development

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

mods - please remove references to Arrested Development

gabbneb, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Hating Fugees is the 2007 version of hating Arrested Development

if you mean did I hate them when they came out and still think their music is crap whenever I hear it then yes

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

fugees were way more awesome than arrested development i don't even get why people always make that comparison.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

because they appeal to people who normally wouldn't like rap at all for pretty much the same reasons (they're "socially conscious", inoffensive, use clumsily obvious samples and comfortable bourgie reference points, etc.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

also because they're both bad

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I think this is one of those polls where the boring choice is probably the right one. except I'm not even 100% sure what the boring choice here would be (Illmatic? 36 Chambers? Straight Outta Compton?)

also, how is no one repping Aquemini yet? I thought ILM had a total hard-on for that album

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

Long Live the Kane by Big Daddy Kane 1

who is this bro

and what, Sunday, 9 September 2007 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

kinda shocked blueprint tied w/illmatic

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 9 September 2007 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

Once again, my vote didn't get counted. I'm ready to say 'fuck a poll.'

Oilyrags, Monday, 10 September 2007 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm so ronery.

The Reverend, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

one unpredictable thing: reasonable doubt gets NO votes.

the blueprint, which i do like, finishing that high is wack wack wack, it's above a dozen or more superior records.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

including reasonable doubt!

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

also i don't really get why death certificate is the "classic" album instead of Kill at Will or AmeriKKKA by Cube....

no votes for great adventures, now i kinda wish i woulda voted for that.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't hear Jay-z full-lengths until two or three years ago, but I'm surprised more people didn't realize Blueprint was the worst album he'd released at that point.

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

also i don't really get why death certificate is the "classic" album instead of Kill at Will or AmeriKKKA by Cube....

probably cuz its a "concept" album - I like records with unifying themes. Also I think the production in general is better than on AmeriKKa's Most Wanted, and um Kill at Will is just an EP.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't hear Jay-z full-lengths until two or three years ago, but I'm surprised more people didn't realize Blueprint was the worst album he'd released at that point.

its sound was extremely refreshing at the time, just several years of kanye/blaze SOULFUL RAP knockoffs have made it sounds like much more of a footnote than it did when it first dropped

deej, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

...and i still like it more than reasonable doubt and vol. 1, although vol. 1 has a couple of his best tracks on it

deej, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

i've always wondered if i could make a super awesome super tight 1 CD album mixtape out of gift and a curse...same thing w/use yr illusion by gnr.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

super awesome super tight 1 CD album mixtape out of gift and a curse

didn't Jay-Z try and fail?

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

haha yeah he did. in fact I think there have been multiple ILM threads built on the premise of doing that w/ various double albums, I think I did a single disc BP2 myself.

In My Lifetime Vol. 1 is an amazing album with weak singles the same way Vol. 2 is a weak album with amazing singles.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

did dah ranjaz (sp?) every put out an album?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think vol. 2 is a weak album at all

deej, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

and altho i defend bp2, i think blueprint's better than that and the black album as well

deej, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

I just think RD-v.3 is as good a run of consecutive rap LPs as I can think of by a rapper so I'm shocked when Blueprint's treated as a go-to.

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

volume 3 is do_ob

Doob may refer to several things:

Joseph Leo Doob, an American mathematician
Doob martingale
Doob's martingale inequality
Doob-Meyer decomposition theorem
Doob Doob O'Rama, the name of two Bollywood soundtrack compilations
The Doobie Brothers band
A doobie

maybe you can do a blend of "Snoopy Track" and that beat you sent me last week that sounded like "Long Train Runnin'."

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

I shoulda voted Critical Beatdown

bernard snowy, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

The Fix by Scarface 0

>:0

and what, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

I pulled out BP2 a couple weeks back, and there's a disconcerting amount of overblown EWF bullsh mixed in with the good tracks. "U Don't Know" remix knocks EVERYTHING the fuck down, though.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

hah but i like the EWFish tracks

"As One" is great
is it sparks that tries to make the noise of a money counter w/ his mouth

deej, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, something about EWF REALLY fucking bugs me, and I've never been able to put my finger one it, but I really have no desire to, either.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

"Fuck All Nite" = more sex jams need to sound like porn funk.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, something about EWF REALLY fucking bugs me, and I've never been able to put my finger one it, but I really have no desire to, either.

for real????

deej, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, a couple songs aside, I can't stand them at all.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's dude's (not fam. enough w/ personal) falsetto that grates.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

Now here's another "R&B" act that I really like. Lots of great songs. And not only a great singles band, in the 70s they tackled albums well too.

(I'm probably going to get picked apart for that statement, but meh.)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

hard knock life > blueprint

am0n, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

kinda shocked blueprint tied w/illmatic

-- BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, September 9, 2007 7:27 PM

Uh, YEAH! There are at least ten albums on that list that put that album in the dust.

talrose, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

Life After Death and Chronic 2001 are definitely not flawless albums. I'll give you Ready to Die, but L.A.D. is as bloated as the man himself

Erock Zombie, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

nah

deej, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

The first half of 2001 is so good that the second half could be made up of the Cold as Ice soundtrack, and it would still deserve to be on this list.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

Rev if U don't like "Serpentine Fire" then we arent secretly related after all

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

"Serpentine Fire" (which I'd never heard before) is alright. I think it's the combination of schmaltz and pomp that puts me off of them, neither of which that song falls prey to. I can deal with one or the other, but not both.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

where do u stand on 'lets groove'

deej, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

HATE! HATE! HATE!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

fwiw, "Shining Star" is the one song I've heard by them that I like quite a bit.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

ok ban rev

deej, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

shining star is like ... "man i really like that 'build me up buttercup' song!"

deej, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 07:43 (seventeen years ago)

To tell the truth, I like "Build Me Up Buttercup". (Is that odd? I don't really know if it's well-liked or not.)

Now that I think of it, Rickey posted a later EWF song that wasn't so bad a few days ago.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

I don't see the connection between "Shining Star" & "Build Me Up Buttercup", though.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

its one of those songs that has been hammered into my subconscious since i was old enough to see movie trailers
