Laughing Stock by Talk Talk is brilliant late at night with the lights off.

Any 70s Tangerine Dream is great for this kind of setting. I also find Laurie Anderson's Big Science to be well-suited for the kind of spaced-out mind I get late at night.
You might also like some Gas stuff by Wolfgang Voigt. Search, well, everything he did under this alias.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've had trouble getting into Popol Vuh - any particular album I should start with?
I love Gas, but pre-"Pop" stuff is a bit too eerie to fit into this category for me.

When you're overtired, hazy, bleary-eyed and nearing that tipping-point of emotionalism (like I was at 3 am, working under emergency deadlines), I'd say Avalon, by Roxy Music.
I felt like this guy, sans the Keryoke Bar, whisky and chicks.

Sia, SO definitely Roxy Music and yes of course The National. Also you might like some Aaliyah and if you love the slinky bass prevalent on her stuff you'll LOVE some Interpol its very introspective and soothing. Listen to some jazz or blues or something Nina Simone-esque, always works.
