I think that by and large Mark is just fucking with the way in which certain over-simplified musical terms (rock, influence, etc) are being defined. Messing about with folk's pre-conceptions is often amusing and enlightening and I imagine that Mark is attempting to (re) formulate his opinion on rock and influence and etc through and against everyone else's responses.

What is rock? Whatever you want it to be. What isn't rock? Whatever isn't for you. There are no right or wrong answers and over- thinking about the lot of this stuff is only going to give you a headache.

in the Dylan thread: "rock’s central and defining achievement that this ideal [type of star/fan relationship] is established as something public"

but vat is zees "public" that does so much central defining work here? what about Luna Summers and how siouxsie sioux "gets inside her head" because it's so "dark"? this is a fairly private connection (though made possible by publicity and enhanced no doubt by the knowledge that there is a silent unknown goth army of kindred souls out there - but how is listening to rock different in this aspect of its publicity than, say, reading the new york times? is the NYT rock??)

What is rock? Whatever you want it to be.
Isn't that a really easy solution to the problem? A cop-out? I think so.

nathalie, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can read as a cop-out, I suppose, but I fail to comprehend how anyone can come up with any hard and fast rules that basically define genre names (soul, rock, etc) around certain acts. Even the earliest of "rock" acts were influenced by other genres (rockabilly, western swing, blues, etc). Where do you draw the line? What makes this unequivocably rock and this not? The easiest answer is (in this case anyway) the best answer and the only honest answer, "I think it is rock, because it rocks."

Waiting for this answer and last it arrives: I think it is rock, because it rocks, Ahmen to that! "Let all the analysis fall away like yellow aged newsprint..."
