We are filled with emotion today. Good songs and great albums can still be made and get out there to the public without having to be a part of the corporate machine.

After we posted this entry yesterday on the brilliant Eric Hutchinson, his new album - Sounds Like This - not only jumped out of nowhere onto the iTunes chart but it raced up all the way to #9. Number nine! All this without being on a freakin’ label!!!!!!!

well, i'll respond to the first person.

I think that is the whole point, isn't it? I am certainly more of a fan of Bangs, and I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that Bangs was much more talented.

But, to put it another way, excepting maybe a half dozen articles, does Bangs deliver writing that is both classic and independent of the music he was writing about?

So, in response to everyone, I agree, it is much better to live in a world of a Lester Bangs than a Perez Hilton. I just find them similar, is all.

Who is Perez Hilton? I thought that was just some sort of ILM handle.

perez is a gossip columnist. there were gossip columnists when lester bangs was around and way before that.

perez isn't a music writer. he just basically says "oh hey check this band out i like them"...the britney coverage is celebrity coverage, it doesn't matter if she does music or not.

Perez is Belen Jesuit Preparatory Academy's best graduate. I saw him on South Beach a couple of months ago, queening it up.

you know, i admit defeat. i've been looking over Psychotic Reactions for things to prove my point, but not only am i not finding anything, i forgot how much i liked the guy and the writing.

Perez is the new Harry Knowles: the eccentric personification of an recently exploding internet trend (Knowles represented the growing power of movie gossip websites, Perez the growing power of celebrity "gossiporn." This type of celebrity news can be ruder and cruder than traditional supermarket magazines because it's audience isn't as conservative and the medium itself makes it easier to avoid lawsuits and break stories immediately.) Like Knowles, Perez Hilton also has the look of the creepy cultural fringe character that makes him seem ideal for "The Man Hollywood Is Scared To Death Of" pr campaigns that he'll get.

Lastly, like Knowles, Perez seems all too willing to ditch his original fanbase/background go completely mainstream Hollywood, despite their initial posturing as being "anti-Hollywood." It'll only be a matter of time before he becomes synonymous with "Hollywood Gossip" and his site becomes irrelevant.
