Echoing Deej here.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 September 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I Want You Back...it's so perfect a song!

Abbott, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Near-impossible. I went for "Uptight" because "Ain't no football hero/ Or smooth Don Juan" just inches it ahead.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

split along gender lines???

and what, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Much as I like "I Want You Back", it's no question: "Up-tight" for me. it's just so relentless and joyous and singleminded. I could listen to those two chords bashing away all day.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

IWYB by a long nose.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

split along gender lines

I was wondering the same thing, but Jon Lewis knows what's up.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

IWYB is like a jackson 5 tetragrammaton

Uptight

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

both have two of the best sung "baby"s ever committed to record!

i'm going with "i want you back" - the z-trip remix in particular

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with "Uptight" is that "For Once In My Life" is even better (and the best song by anyone ever, too), so I kinda forget about it sometimes. "I Want You Back" has that progression and 12-y.o. Michael. It wins.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

The moment of "OHHHHH baby give me 1 more chaaance" makes me flip the fuck out every time.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

when I was sixteen, I mastered "IWYB's" very-Jamerson-but-not actually-Jamerson-himself bass part after much effort. it was a fukking bitch! and it was a very good year!

tough to choose, but "I.W.Y.B."

Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I had no idea that wasn't Jamerson. Who is it?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

how 'uptight' (the phrase) went from something good to something bad is a story i'd like to see.

IWYB is a better song, though

IWYB. The only song that can compete is Groove Is In The Heart.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

When I first glommed onto "Uptight", it seemed unbeatable. However, after being overexposed to it, I can't get particularly excited about it, anymore. Curiously, this has never happened with IWYB, even though I've probably heard it just as much, if not more.

"I Don't Know Why", however, is the best song ever recorded in the history of the universe. No question.

dell, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

gff, yeah, I was always curious about that etymological twist as well.

dell, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

IWYB = one of my favourites on Singstar. Damn hard but awesome fun. Sadly Uptight isn't on there.

I Want You Back, a difficult and enjoyable quandary

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

"Uptight"

2for25, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Uptight", but not by much.

Euler, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

I must be the only person who doesn't particularly like the Jacksons until they went disco.

No, I am a fan of Euler (the math guy), but I've only ever used the name here (and in the sack).
