Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

we love you but this pushes the boundaries of our friendship

Edward III, Monday, 10 September 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh that's right, Idolator's live-blogging this...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 September 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

I've just turned it on to see Britney lip syncing very poorly.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Do we go over to Idolator or comment here?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever works. The comments over there are already in overdrive.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

umm, Matthew is destroying both this board and Idolator with his VMA liveblogging.

no he's not

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just grateful there are so many places on the internet to tell me what i'm watching as i watch it.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think we're going to need all the help we can get this year. This is incomprehensible.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

love the 'robot' theme of this show...hilariously unecessary

why are the highlights washing out of her wig

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

he milked that out too

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!?

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

WTF. "Fergie's not here, so here comes Ludacris. Ludacris? Ok, I'll just take the award then."

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

this is REALLY awful this year. whoever came up with the suite music perfomance idea should be fired and flogged.

swinburningforyou, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

This is the worst it's ever been, easy, and the last couple years were pretty bad.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

When Britney's performance started, and she did that nod to the Elvis comeback special, for 15 seconds I thought this might go somewhere. Then i saw her body...

Its really been down hill since, except for sarah silverman

swinburningforyou, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

Britney's body looks fine. A bit thick-er than her heyday, sure, but there's nothing wrong with some thickness.

As far as her performance... well, I'm still holding on to the small chance that it was a big prank and she's going to come back out and ROCK IT.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

Alicia Keys is chunky now too.

swinburningforyou, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

And she looks HOT.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

you know, its not that thickness is a bad thing. when you saw britneys body, everyone should have realized what we've already suspected: She has no interest in putting the work she used to put in, but still wants all the attention.

Her being attractive isn't the point

swinburningforyou, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

BEST VIDEO

Tape Store, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Detox baby, it's coming!"

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

LOL yeah right.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

hey 30 seconds of Mastodon w/Josh Homme

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

how much is hayden pennaertte regretting having to host this bullshit "fan lounge?"

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

who?

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

idk. this final thing is a disaster.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

Fat Britney is my fave Britney yet!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

"my highlight was alicia keys"

BAN SWAY

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm watching the replay of Britney and I'm now convinced she thought this was the rehearsal.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

mtv is all about † btw.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, it was a weird and disappointing performance but the song is so fucking awesome that it'll still be a hit. So long as the video is great, she's set.

And yes, Alicia Keys was pretty much the hilight. And Kanye/T-Pain.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone involved with this show shoulda said they had diarrhea.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

lol mark ronson

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

It really wasn't that bad. Have you seen the last few VMAs? This was a total improvement...

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

And yeah, Mark Ronson is so annoying.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

Chris Brown's dancing was a highlight. Alicia worships the '70s. The tribute to Dr. Dre made it seem like he was dead.

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

lol quadruple threat award.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

kanye west "social activist"

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have cable and I wouldn't watch this shite if you paid me. Have fun.

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

"9:40 p.m. This whole show, including the ads, is like an S.O.S. scrawl into a beach on a deserted island: 'WORLD OUT OF IDEAS. PLEASE SEND HELP.'"

idolator otm

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

so true.

Chris Brown's dancing was a highlight.

OMG YEAH! FIRST HE CAME OUT AS CHAPLIN (OR HITLER WHO KNOWS) AND THEN HE IMITATED THE WATER FOUNTAINS AT EPCOT AND THEN HE DID TWO SECONDS OF "BILLIE JEAN" (SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN NE-YO DOES)!! OMG!!! THANK GOD FOR MY SHORT ATTENTION SPAN OR ELSE I'D REMEMBER USHER!!

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

Have you seen the last few VMAs? This was a total improvement...

yes I have and RONG RONG RONG. Those were lame. This was incompetent.

marmotwolof, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

mastodon and kanye/t-pain were pretty much the only good parts i thought

bstep, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

Me and my friends were gonna watch Trolls 1 & 2 tonight, MTV distracted us just enough that we only got through the first. We missed Kid Rock promoting his album evidently, but we did catch Dr. Dre wearing George Michael's muscle suit.

xpost we also missed kanye/t-pain but we caught the true rock beardos (kinda reminded me of when Megadeth shows up at the end of Decline Of Western Civilization II to remind us of REAL metal)

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

train wreck of a show. i hope it dies

carne asada, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

in an era when fans can watch concerts on their cellphones and spy on hours-old gigs by way of YouTube, it’s harder than ever to arrange a performance that feels like a big deal.

what the fuck, chief? evidently, people are watching performances on youtube and on their cellphones (maybe), and so... that makes it hard to be a big deal how?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

hip-hop producers be yoked up these days.

carne asada, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

I think the big problem with the show was that it was tailormade for cellphones and YouTubes. They should have went A BIGGER BLOWOUT instead of having intimate performances of Fall Out Boy for people to download later.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

It's so weird that they got rid of a bunch of old award categories just to replace them with new ones with really stupid names. "Monster Single"? "Most Earthshattering Collaboration"? "Quadruple Threat Of The Year"? Even the presenters couldn't say those phrases with a straight face.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

how many awards did they even give out? three? not that these awards are even relevant, but they did seem very secondary.
i think the whole production crew must have been drunk. it seemed like more of a mess then usual.

carne asada, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

There were 11 awards this year. Last year there were 23.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

X-Factor performances dominate YouTube's most watched clips in the UK. so mediocrity of VMA performances would be in good, popular company.

blueski, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps they'll have to democratise the awards more to maintain budget interest over the next few years? not that this would result in different winners really tho.

blueski, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Dude they're having the audience vote on their fave clips and that's the version they're re-running.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder when Kelefa's deadline was, cuz ]And the channel promised to cut down on the usual endless reruns; “Happening once and only once,” the commercials kept announcing, with a hint of desperation was kinda disproven when the show immediately was re-run.

Also, Sarah Silverman was not the host, which was kinda obvious after the first half hour.

da croupier, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

It didn't really have a host. 2004's didn't either.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

umm, Matthew is destroying both this board and Idolator with his VMA liveblogging.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

No youtube of Alicia Keys performance? I wanna hear that cover.

Jordan, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Our cable guide thing said Timbaland was the show's host.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 10 September 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

The Maestro

carne asada, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, all he did was perform at the end and in pre-taped hotel suite segments, and do a half-assed DJ intro to Linkin Park. Oh, and accept Justin's award for him.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Judging from this show's treatment of Tim, Kanye and Dr. Dre, I'd say rap producers officially have way more showbiz juice than any rappers these days.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

I think Dre ate Carrot Top

carne asada, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

iow would they be this famous if they didn't front tracks?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

When Alchemist and Agallah came out to a standing ovation, I was like "You got the juice now"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

I know they're rappers, too, I'm just saying, the producer/rapper/auteur model has won out over the MC-who-also-pretends-to-be-a-businessman model.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

OK, so not the best performance in the world, but come on "out of shape Britney". Frankly, that's absurd. Who wants to see a sack of bones sliding around the stage anyway?

- Sarah, London

gabbneb, Monday, 10 September 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

i thought Britney looked OK but i'd have preferred it if she'd dressed up as an alien geisha on stilts frankly.

blueski, Monday, 10 September 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

TS: "Britney Spears, put a shirt on!" vs. "Mick Jagger, put a shirt on!"

omg

HI DERE, Monday, 10 September 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

was that performance that time when britney carried a snake on one of the VMA's? cause that was great even though i don't like her usually.

pisces, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

So this is what's considered "fat" now?

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, its really fucking disturbing to read all the reports of how "fat" she was.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Britney was not fat.

However, she didn't look good in that outfit. It had nothing to do with her actual size and more to do with the fact that she isn't very toned anymore. Had she actually been wearing pants with that ensemble, it would have come across much better IMO. (Also, if she hadn't seemed like a drugged-out zombie throughout the performance, how she looked in that outfit wouldn't have been as much of a deal.)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

no she is not obese, but in the world of britney/dancers/people wearing underwear on stage, not toned = fat

curmudgeon, Monday, 26 August 2013 02:08 (twelve years ago)

Was happily watching a movie, flipped this on for a few minutes. They give an award for best video with a social message? What is wrong with the youth of today?

clemenza, Monday, 26 August 2013 02:11 (twelve years ago)

I don't know the Macklemore & Lewis song that won that. But yea, never heard of that award before. Justin just briefly brought up 'Nsync but now its back to solo stuff --"Suit & Tie"

macklemore's speeches were incredibly painful

Rev warned us about Macklemore back when he was just a NW phenomenon, but we didn't listen. Now he's whole-country famous and we have to ride it out until nobody cares anymore.

I liked Katy Perry's "Fireworks" but her new one, done in a boxing ring set up in front of the Brooklyn Bridge was a nothing closer to the night.
