Awww... I was going to attempt a best song poll... but then all the hardcore fans would moan that I missed some rare live gem.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

If we were including EPs I'd have gone for Prospect Hummer, just for the title track, but Sung Tongs it is.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

That band sold out on their first record. Their best stuff is the rehearsals from their first week of practice, and Panda Bear's jr high piano lessons.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

no Wastered, no credibility

sanskrit, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Wastered isn't by Animal Collective, strictly. And come on, it's not very good is it?

the next grozart, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

campfire songs is my favourite

r1o natsume, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

sung tongs for me, too. Although, if Avey Tare & Panda Bear's Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished was included I'd be tempted to go for that.

campfire songs. i've come to the conclusion that i really don't much like these guys, but that one works somehow.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

Campfire Songs. It's in a different league. I can't believe the same people had anything to do this latest album. No really; they all might have played some instruments, but I don't believe the same person/persons who made Campfire Songs could have made Strawberry Jam.

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

campfire songs yeah. here comes the indian a nose behind.

resolved, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

I love them all, but I've never understood the appeal of Here Comes The Indian - can anyone explain? It's just screaming and bleating and really upsetting white noise to these ears.

ian, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Sung Tongs, followed closely by
Sung Tongs,
Sung Tongs, and
Sung Tongs.

Way back there vanishing somewhere in the rear view mirror, Campfire Songs & Here Comes the Indian. Fuck the rest.

word. lately I've been starting to suspect that I don't actually like these dudes all that much and have just tried to talk myself into liking all the other stuff I've heard just cuz that song is so classic. "Fireworks" and Panda Bear's album are pretty great though, so maybe I just prefer the later stuff?

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

GET REAL
by miles davis

I definitely enjoy Sung Tongs, but the thing that gets me about all this Animal love is that it seems like nobody realizes these guys sound fucking WEIRD. Like so weird that I guarantee you that you, if you think they're great, will listen to them in five or ten years and wonder what you were thinking.
And I'll tell you what you were thinking. You were thinking: it's better for it to sound new than for it to sound good.
The production is abysmal. The singing is often grating. The compositions are strong. The guitar and percussion can be pretty amazing, though.
It's just not enough. If you want to listen to timeless weird, check out "Bitches Brew" and stop listening to music that sounds -- honestly -- like a bunch of kindergarteners on acid stuck in the middle of a black hole.

_________ on acid.

but I've never understood the appeal of Here Comes The Indian

This record is beautifully scary and startling and a grade A pot smoking record. I wish they still made records that were more like this.

kwhitehead, Thursday, 13 September 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

"Sung Tongs." But I'm the Jam is really growing on me and it might eventually overtake.
