This morning, cancer. Was involved in some of the best and worst of music called jazz.
Haven't found anything in English yet; if you speak German, http://derstandard.at/?url=/?id=3029789

I'm not that familiar with him to rate his playing, but he was a brilliant composer. Rest in peace.

RIP. One of the world's leading keyboard players is no more.

I'm sorry to hear that. He produced an old Salif Keita album ('Amen') that I picked up the other day. Very nice it is too.

R.I.P.
One of the masters.
Glad I got to see him about a decade ago at the Blue Note in NYC, and bumped into him on the stairs.
― Joe, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)
Mercy mercy mercy, indeed.

In addition the famous stuff, I was pretty into this record awhile back, cool West African-sounding fusion stuff:

Such a bummer. I played "Arrival in New York" when I DJ-ed last week.

As I said in yet another Beth Parker Redundant Thread, I loved Weather Report.

His music has brought me more than my fare share of smiles and happiness. RIP, Joe. I'll see you at the great jam in the sky.

Papa Zawinul, inventor of hip-hop!
Great player.
― jim, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
Zawinul was something of an Austrian national hero, and the coverage in Der Standard has been really quite good, including some amazing old photos. Well worth grabbing a German speaker or firing up Babelfish and checking out the first link in this thread.
― Nubbelverbrennung, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
That was always the impression I got from an Austrian sax player I knew in grad school. Nubbelverbrennung, are you Colin M33d3r?
― James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)
I am that I am.
― Nubbelverbrennung, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)
So much to thank him for...
― Capitaine Jay Vee, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)
Sucks. He made major contributions, of course, to In a Silent Way, one of my very favorite records.

Joe Zawinul made lots of very fine music and I am sad that he is gone.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)
Don't want to hijack the tread, but I just remembered, Colin, that I saw a really good Austrian bass player the other day, Hans Glawischnig.

Looks like Willie Tee also just died. Apparently he was a big influence on Zawinul.

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy is one of those rare songs that just makes you feel better
