I thought it was odd that Kanye claimed to ask Timbaland to re-do the drums on "Stronger" because of this song, of all songs. I mean, yeah, obviously Tim does drums better than Kanye, but the beat on this isn't really anything special.

Admittedly my access here has been increasingly infrequent during the past couple years. I probably didn't see your qn.
I wouldn't say it's undying, though her album is probably the one I am most looking forward to hearing right now. (More than Teedra Moses and Rahsaan Patterson, at least as far as R&B goes.) She has a pretty high batting average with the songs she writes/arranges/etc., and of course I have absolutely no issues with the sound of her voice.

'don't stop the music' is ok i suppose, but it still doesn't excite me particularly. and i don't at all mean this to sound like i'm pulling rank or flipping the fetish back over on anyone but isnt it funny how the only european on this thread is the only one hating on the cheesy europop?? maybe it's all a bit too close to what i know or something. (the lex was fucked off about this stuff too was he not)
you could also try say i was a hypocrite for liking stargate and old xtina milian and those freemasons mixes of beyonce, but then that transaction's the other way around right? conversely i probably enjoy 'cupid shuffle' and the new nina sky single and whatever other freestyle tinged thing comes out way more than i should, so maybe there is an element of idealized othering there after all

i.e. i'm cool with synthy beats when tim isn't doing stale fricky fricky routines and nate dogg impressions over them
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
the way i are is just so cheesy and sentimental... for some reason i imagine it being the lat thing timbaland ever does, like the track at the end of his greatest hits when he falls off a yacht next month
― and what, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
ha ha al agrees with the lex :P
re hilson, yeah her voice is fine on the okayish stuff she's put out but this is more about her as the face of the clutch isn't it? there's something i distrust about their formula (and it is a formula) that i can't quite place yet, but that video games song sounds like another good example
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

in other words, he's still on every other Aftermath and/or major West coast rap release, neither of which come out as frequently as they used to.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)
Eh. I've been paying more attention to NorCal stuff lately, and he's not really there at all. Actually, I'm kinda glad he's on chilla. A few years ago I was at the point where I never wanted to hear him again.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)
So I guess this is the time for him to plot his comeback, now that people such as myself are getting over the Nate-Dogg on every record era of the early '00s.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

what is the Clutch's formula, as you hear it, then? usually I think I'm pretty good at picking up recurring motifs in a producer or songwriter's work but I haven't really noticed anything like that with them, maybe because I identify most of their hits as a Timbaland or Polow production first and not so much the melodic/lyrical elements.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

What's the name of the mix? I can definitely imagine that there are some killer mixes of TWIA out there.
― musically, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)
there are loads of TWIA remixes out there. The Icons Remix is a pretty great house remix, but the OneRepublic remix is pretty great dance rock remix as well. OneRepublic's "Apologize" is also the second best song on Shock Value.
― danzig, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)
haha i've probly bitten off more than i can chew with that clutch dig, it's way too hard to pinpoint! if there even is anything to pinpoint. certainly on stuff like icebox/promise ring/videogames/anonymous you get the impression theyve worked back out from a single metaphor or cleverclever hook, and that's probably the main stuff i pick up soonest. but then a million people do that. ne-yo for instance (like with 'gallery' and 'mirror'), except when he gets it right his is realer and much less superficial. so 'irreplaceable' could never be a clutch tune, but then really i mightve said the same about 'like a boy' and '4 minutes', which did turn out to be them, a little surprisingly. at the same time though, they still seem way more recognizable than truly anonymous undetectable hitmachines like sean garrett and johnta austin. so i dunno?
there's just too many of the fuckers to get a proper handle tbh. when you go thru the crew solo a zillion more tunes come tumbling out, check out candice nelson! and j.que claims to have written 'yeah' and 'throwback' by usher.
don't wanna think about this anymore!!
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)
This song is number 11 on my top 50 list, and it's probably my favorite single on radio right now (I don't hear "Umbrella," "You," or "Who Knew" very much). I don't even remember it being on Shock Value.
But yeah, GREAT track...It's one of the most gorgeous hyper-ballads I've ever heard (a traditional ballad, that is, where guy delivers verse, girl delivers verse, both guy and girl perform together...Also, there's the whole question-answer format and loads of repetition! I want to bring this to Lit tomorrow!). Also, I love that part where the synths drop out, and everything feels so ethereal. And then the "Push It" synths comes back, and the party starts up again. AWESOME
― Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)
there isn't a thread on the entire album, is there? I was hoping the success of this track would inspire a reappraisal, people getting over the lack of next level whatnot and getting into the fun of it.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)
i'm really into this now. love keri hilson on this track. and the rehashed everything else about it.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)
most of the discussion has been here: Timbaland is mediocre, ADMIT IT
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)
i like this a lot more than that "my love", but not more than "give it to me" which is more by the numbers timbaland to me viz going all of the way back to something resembling the song structure tricks in aaliyah tracks + it sounds so good in the mix. it's timbaland's delivery and lyrics and the vocal interplay that almost clinches it though. i love whatever he's doing to treat his vocals, too.
