Tillis based the song on a couple who lived near his family in Florida. In real life, the man was wounded in Germany in World War II and sent to recuperate in England. There he married a nurse who took care of him at the hospital. The two of them moved to Florida shortly afterward, but he had periodic return trips to the hospital as problems with his wounds kept flaring up. His wife saw another man as the veteran lay in the hospital. Tillis changed the war to the more recent Korean War in the song, and departed from the ending that happened in real life: the man killed his wife in a murder-suicide.[citation needed] This is however alluded to in the song, with the singer avowing, "If I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground."

I dont't think I've ever heard any of these, though I'm always mixing up Kenny Rogers and Kenny G. Which one is the saxophonist?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

I give in.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Lucille" or "Islands in the Stream."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

kenny g is the one you find when you type "saxaphone kenny" into google

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

he also appears if you type "saxophone kenny" as well, weirdly enough

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

but not if you type "millwall steve"

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

"The Gambler" may well be the only decent song I’ve ever heard by him, so it’s absolutely no contest for me. However, "Lady" must be destroyed, post-haste!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, if "Condition" had made number one...

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Islands In The Stream, no question. Got ruined by that guy from the Fugees.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 52 for saxamophone kenny. (0.31 seconds)

blueski, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

Got ruined by that guy from the Fugees.

"Lady". 27 years later it still sounds the way butterflies feel in my stomach, pure worry.

Euler, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

duh, no "condition", no cred.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Ruby

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

I voted "Ruby." But "Daytime Friends" and "Coward of the County" also good. "We've Got Tonight" pretty sweet tune if you're predisposed to that kinda stuff.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Condition" didn't make #1, alas. Neither did his Kim Carnes collab, which would've gotten my vote. "Islands" it is.

Kinda surprising that "Gambler" only hit #16, considering how ubiquitous it was.

(I think I need a good First Edition collection)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

"Islands" by virtue of "Condition" not being on the poll.

aldo, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

I sure hope his elbow holds up for the Tigers to have a chance.

Jake Brown, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

He never got better than Ruby (Go Tigers!)

"Lucille" is a great and genuinely sad song.

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

meaning song that genuinely makes me sad.

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Ruby" by a mile.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

"Coward of the County" is a nasty, manipulative, exploitative, reactionary piece of shit.

It's got my vote, though.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

I have a weak spot for "Coward Of The County".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

(Although I do also kind of agree with the former poster's criticism)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

"ruby," but i like a bunch of them. a girl i knew in college thought the guy in "lucille" had 400 children and frogs in the field.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Coward Of The County" is seriously WTF. "We've Got Tonight" is owned by Seger. "The Gambler" is mawkish but also beautifully-crafted and pretty much unstoppable.

TS: "The Gambler" vs. "Coward of The County"

(Not the songs - the made-for-TV movies)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

my bobby bare station on pandora has played 'coward of the county' for me no less than 20 times in the last two weeks and i've never skipped it! still not my pick.

tremendoid, Thursday, 13 September 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

This live version of "Ruby" is my favorite video of the summer:

Aww Kenny, why'd you have to go and lose the earring?

I actually saw him play with the First Edition at Knotts Berry Farm, '71 or so. I was too young to care, mostly, but I do have a vague memory of "Ruby."

Rock Hardy, Friday, 14 September 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

His defunct fried chicken was darned tasty.
