I can't possibly be the only ilxor that loves Janis Ian - Between the Lines, right? Right?

Ok, maybe it's possible. Due to buying the SNL season one DVD set, I was reminded of how good this is (and not just for the razorblade triumph of "At Seventeen"). Any other takers?

I can't answer with much conviction or authority in this matter, having procrastinated checking out her stuff for a long time now (along with Phoebe Snow, whom I for some reason (and probably unfairly) lump in together with her)). I do know that way before she did that record, she did "Society's Child", which is a kind of amazing song from the sixties about an interracial romance.

Oddly enough, Janis Ian - first episode of SNL season one, Phoebe Snow, episode two (the Paul Simon musical revue, mostly ok, some crap, lots of uncomfortable Garfunkle creepy staredown moments).

Also A: yes, "society's child" is gr8
B: Billy Preston also on first episode, also amazing.

At some point, I might just indulge in a "music of SNL season one OMG" thread. This will be mitigated by the goat like singing of Esther Phillips in episode 4.

But enough of that. Janis Ian?

Wow, weird. Yeah, with that beginning I can imagine the rest of the season's music lineup being pretty amazing.

three weeks pass...

So is that the best place to start with Janis Ian?

Yeah, it's a good'un. I'm actually more partial to her first coupla late-60s releases too but that may be a matter of taste.

nine months pass...

Bought it today at Borders for six dollars and change?!?!

The album cover's beautiful. I'll need an hour by myself to properly digest the album [I live in a house of six and I'm rarely the only one there].

It's worth remembering her rather brilliant anti industry/pro filesharing piece: http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html
