Genius of Love

...is a song by the Tom Tom Club, from their 1981 self-titled debut. I absolutely love this song, but listening to it, I can't shake the sensation that I'm hearing a connection to another tune I can't name. Is there a well-known hip-hop song that samples this beat? It sound very familar to me, but in a slightly different form.

Mark, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for any help. And how is that second Tom Tom Club album, by the way? Do you like Genius of Love?

Mark, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love love love this song.

yes, i've heard it sampled somewhere too... i think it might be on the most recent black eyed peas album. this is a very vague and possibly fabricated memory tho.

'wordy rapping hood' is sampled on that 'absolutely flawless' song, i know that one for sure.

minna, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh! and mariah carey stole a verse from 'genius' in one of her songs! maybe sampled the tune too?

minna, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mariah Carey bit it for one of her big hits--don't remember which.

Lee G, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it was fantasy.

minna, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't it end up sampled for the M/A/A/R/S single?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also used by grandmaster flash and the furious five as the basis for their post-1978 (barely) hit "It's Nasty"

(I like how ODB rhymes "mariah" with "pacifier")

fritz, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mucho bettah than Talking Heads. I even liked The Good The Bad and The Funky.

nathalie, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Such a great song, so full of elation. I remember a lot of R&B/hip- hop stations in the early 90's using this as the background music for the DJ patter between songs, so I always associate it with that flavor.

Dare, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

X Clan sampled "Genius Of Love" on the last song ("In The Ways Of The Scales") of their debut album.

a quick google search mentions the song sampled by Naughty By Nature, X-Ecutioners, and Mariah Carey.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i vaguely remember hearing about but not reading an article a couple years back, i think in Village Voice, about all the times GOL has been sampled, roughly 17 major examples cited then, probably plenty more since.

But GOL was taken in large swatches from a Bohannon track, was it not? Which one?

robin, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what became known as the 'Compass Point sound' after the recording studios near Nassau in the Bahamas. main practitioners besides Tom Tom Club were Sly & Robbie - check Grace Jones Nightclubbing album for more of this sound or - even better - Island's 1985 Gwen Guthrie remix-athon mini album Padlock for full-on Larry Levan at the top-of-his-game beautiful madness.

also check the NYC Peech Boys album (Levan's main project) and singles "Don't Make Me Wait" and "Life Is Something Special". plus West End monster hit Taana Gardner/Kenton Nix 12" "Heartbeat".

lots of other side stuff has/references close to this feel, especially from Funk-Jazz scene including Tom Browne "Jamaica Funk", possibly tracks by Wally Badarou (who appears on some of those Compass Point recordings), Azymuth - "Maracana", maybe even back to stuff like George Duke "Reach For It" (don't have it to hand to check)...

Bohannon? the Keep On Dancin' album is essential - one of the greatest Funk albums of all time. monster bass, repetition and dynamics!

and no, I'm not to be confused with DJ Martian the walking music reference library - whatever happened to him - been quiet lately?

Paul, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
what is it with this song??? why is it so good? you can point to a bunch of little pieces that in any other contest would be so annoying but it doesn't matter here! Like even the way she sings jeen-ee-us OF love, why the fuck would you normally put up with that? but it's brilliant! likewise Frantz with his wacky shouts.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

This song has been sampled a LOT! From the-breaks.com:

Tom Tom Club: (Sire 1981)
* “Genius of Love”
     Almighty RSO’s “Badd Boyz”
     Ant Banks’s “Roll 'em Phat”
Above the Law’s “Dose of the Mega Flex”
     Boogiemonsters’s “Bronx Bombas”
Busta Rhymes ft Erykah Badu’s “One”
Cam'Ron ft Kenny Greene’s “Me, My Moms & Jimmy”
     Dr. Jeckyll’s “Genius Rap”
Dream Warriors’s “And Now the Legacy Begins”
     Fresh Kid Ice’s “Roll Call”
     Funkdoobiest’s “Natural Fun”
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s “It's Nasty”
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s “We Will Rock You”
     Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy”
     Mellow Man Ace’s “Linda”
PM Dawn’s “Gotta Be Movin' on Up”
Redhead Kingpen’s “A Shade of Red”
     Redman’s “Brick City Mashin'”
     Second II None’s “N----z Trippin'”
     Threat’s “Give it Up”
     Tupac’s “High Speed”
     Wascals’s “Class Clown”
X-Clan’s “In the Ways of the Scales”
Yush 2K ft Dangerman’s “Face N Da Shape”

And I can think of at least one more right off the top of my head.

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what is it with this song??? why is it so good?

There are so many reasons why this song is genius. Let me list a few:

1: That riff! It's certainly one of the greatest synth riffs of all time.

2: The riff again! Sonically, all of the interweaving synth lines are really amazing and unique.

3. As you mentioned, the way she sings "jeen-ee-us OF love" has a very english-as-a-second-language quality to it that is endearing and somewhat mysterious (who are these people singing? they are tough to picture.)

4: There is a tension created between the icy coolness of the vocals (heightened by quality mentioned in #3) and a sort of spirit of raucous goofiness (James Broooooowwwwwn).

5. There is also an interesting tension created between the sparseness and minimalism of the groove and the density of ideas contained in the song (weird chanting, references to other musicians, lyrics that go all over the place).

6. The song has kind of a strange structure. The incredibly strong hook ties the whole thing together and it's mainly what you remember. But all of these different little vocal parts are pretty different from the average verse/chorus structure of a pop tune. It's also interesting that the song title itself is the part you mentioned that sounds very awkward. The lyric "Genius of Love" is interesting and could have made a cool vocal hook. But instead that line is sort of thrown away awkwardly and the memorable vocal hook on the record is the crazy "James Broooooowwn" part.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there are other reasons for its greatness.

Don't forget the insane animated video, either...

Telephone Thing, Friday, 28 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It was actually "PLEASURE Of Love" that had the animated video. From the second Tom Tom Club LP, not the first.

(Unless I'm ignorant and "Genius Of Love" has its own animated video as well. In which case, please chastise me.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 28 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought this album last weekend after hearing "Wordy Rappinghood" for the first time and being blown away. I love how the verses are semiraps about words, and then the chorus is nonsense vocalizing.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 28 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Genius" has an animated video too- done in the same style as the first LP's cover art. The JAMES BROOOWWWWN part is, well, fucking awesome.

Telephone Thing, Friday, 28 January 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Annie's 'Chewing Gum' sounds so much like this, it's almost a straight tribute. It's in the beat, the spoken-bits about having fun, and bleeping.

anyway, wonderful song.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 28 January 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, many people have noticed that Chewing Gum is heavily influenced by Tom Tom Club.

They also do a surprisingly good version of "Under The Boardwalk."

Chicks on Speed did a good version of "Wordy Rappinghood" and there is a excellent Trevor Jackson/Playgroup remix of Common's "New Wave" that rides the synth hook from WR.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 28 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i've seen the connection before, but wanted to add it to the thread here.

three years pass...

Thanks for your message. The guess of Icelandic is close because Tina and her sisters lived in Iceland for several years in the mid-sixties when their father was stationed there with NATO.

But, no cigar because, in fact, that is not a sample. That is Tina's sister Lani speaking in a "made up" language that she invented to amuse herself when she was younger. She recorded the voice in one or two takes and we loved it because it was so weird.

Hope this answer helps.

Warm regards,

Chris Frantz

fantastic number, lousy sound quality. Listen to how the original dynamic is compressed in this digital reproduction, like all digital sound to the public is today. Sorry but I am an old hifi nerd from the hay days of pure reproduced analougue recordings, when there were nasty expensive equipment to record and and reproduce sound with. It could be heard in the sound quality and I miss those times, listening to music. Comments is welcome

Nod to Walterkranz, but I think this song is so good because it sounds like a party. A party in the sunshine in a grassy area with wine drinks and fruit drinks and girls in swishy skirts. A party at which children are welcome (and probably do most of the actual dancing) but which is, paradoxically, not horrible. A party at which there is likely to be some discreetly sexy business, but at which no one will bong any beer, use the word "bro", or make gross comments about your sister's anatomy. A party featuring at least three generations of at least one family, and plenty of delicious foods which are small and attractively presented. A good party that greets you with a smile and open arms.
