The Bulgarian Women's Choir

This is very beautiful stuff. I only have 1 CD -- Tour '93 -- but I've been getting to know it for some years now, and I can honestly say it is one of the most pleasurable things I own to listen to. And it is so intricate and long that it hasn't gotten old yet. The harmonies, and the energy in the rhythms is just rapture.

I also have a Trio Bulgarka album, which is also beautiful, but I'm not sure if they are affiliated.

Heard this?

John Justen should be coming along shortly...

HI DERE, Saturday, 15 September 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

They're fantastic. I'm not at home right now, but when I get there I'll have two others to recommend (Mystere de voix des Bulgares? vol. 1 and 2) on nonsuch. Should still be in print, and were available as a cheapo box set with a mediocre third CD for a while.

xpost hahaha!

yes it is definitely time for me to explore their other stuff... i've heard of "mystere..."

Ive had "le mystere de voix bulgares" for years and it is wonderful. Total "hair up on the nape of the neck" chilling beauty.

"Mikr Stanke Le" was used to great effect in the movie "Jesus of Montreal" to my recollection.

see also Eva Quartet, which is a four soloists from the choir as a quartet -- I actually like this better than the choral stuff

Dominique, Monday, 17 September 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

oooh cool

Surmounter, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

I love that Eva Quartet record

I didn't realize that Bulgarian Women's Choir was the same group as Bulgarian Voices Angelite, a spinoff from the 80's Mystère Des Voix Bulgares lineup. Angelite has two fantastic records with Moscow Art Trio & Huun-Huur Tu -- the first one 'Fly Fly My Sadness' has longer improvised pieces where they stretch out, 'Mountain Tale' is a more focused attempt at crosspollination, shorter songs, the tuvan / bulgarian harmonies a little more worked out but still very strange, I love both of those records

the original Mystère Des Voix Bulgares lineup on Johnny Carson, 1990 -- 2nd song is 'Polegnala E Todora' i.e. the one

Thats awesome! God their voices give me goosebumps.

I am a fan of youtube user k8fan, it's the same person who posted the 80's Mary Margaret O'Hara clips

Surmounter, Trio Bulgarika were another Mystere spin off group. I bought 'The Forest Is Crying' when Kate named it as a Desert Island Disc years back, close miked trio harmonies (similar to the Eva record in a way, but less 'cool' more fire -- they're the group on Sensual World & Red Shoes

.

& this record pales before the real thing but it's still technically brilliant & worth hearing:

GEINOH YAMASHIROGUMI
Chi No Hibiki - Sings East Europe

Way before Mystere des Voix Bulgares, in 1975 a group of 50 or so Japanese singers had studied and mastered Bulgarian and other eastern European singing styles. Extraordinary at the time, and even though we can hear the real thing easily enough today, still a remarkable pioneering project.
