record sleeves that show only a portrait picture of the artist - classic or dud?

it's the most boring thing ever isnt it?
(and some might say narcsist)
are there any good examples of this?
maybe this one:

I pretty much hate the band, but the new HIM album cover is cool:

Tuomas, Sunday, 16 September 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Zeno, Sunday, 16 September 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

ledge, Sunday, 16 September 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

ledge, Sunday, 16 September 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

I think artist photo covers can be cool, but only if they don't feature the typical ponderous face of a Serious Artist:

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 16 September 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

from her to eternity? I don't know, the way they all look ill on that album makes me feel uncomfortable. Classic album though, it's just the cover

King Boy Pato, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

Er, what's the major difference between those two Aphex Twin covers that makes the other one rubbish and the other one great?

Tuomas, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

I say classic.

Everybody should put a photo of themselves on something they are selling. It says "I'm the fucker who made this/sold you this, and it's me you take issue with if it's shit"

Not doing this I consider to be evasive.

PhilK, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, they're both obviously going for the "i'm a bit crazy and evil, me" vibe, but the first one just looks like the crap painting it is. The second one - the expression, the cropping, the photoshoppery, it all works. xp

ledge, Sunday, 16 September 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Classic unless the artist is holding the instrument he plays

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 16 September 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

Does Lionel Richie play the chair?

I guess the general ILX feeling is that oil paintings > photos?

some record covers that show only a portrait picture of the artist are good. some are not so good.

some record covers that show only a portrait picture of the artist are good. some are not so good.

OTM. There are zillions of great ones. And given the choice between an album cover showing a band or a singer, and one showing, like, nothing, my general tendency would usually be to prefer the former. Especially if they look cool, or just interesting, and if I don't otherwise know what they look like.

xhuxk, Sunday, 16 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

(Though, on the other hand, I guess I've never much distinguished between "portrait picture" and some other kind of picture. I like pictures of people! But maybe not so much "portraits", per se, I dunno.)

Portraits are not the enemy. Abstract art designed to show how, you know, SMART the musician is, now that is the enemy.

"Hey, I'm not in Pavement any more. I'm a serious artist with a new sound, oh wait..."

I think this cover's kind of classic in its own way because it's almost taking the piss out of the whole idea of him going solo.

That expression on Frampton's face is like the funniest thing ever

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

There's a tiny village called Frampton near where I live and for about 10 years I've wanted to drive there in the middle of the night and write "Comes Alive!" in thick black marker under the roadsigns. But I'm too lazy to get up in the middle of the night.
