Bollocks. Can't work out this random anti-embedding shit.

Legendary English rock and roll band THE GODFATHERS had hoped to tour the USA for the first time in 20 years through February. And it is with sincere regret that the group have to announce that this tour has now been severely curtailed due to the ongoing credit crunch.

In the financial Armageddon currently laying waste to banks and financial institutions there are plenty of innocent victims. CD and record shops, music retailers, venues and record companies are all struggling to survive the collective belt-tightening of a world living in fear for it's jobs and security.

The Godfathers' projected US tour in February is the latest victim of this financial meltdown. Only announced just before Christmas, the seismic shifts in the world economy and general doom and gloom in the music business has unfortunately led the tour to be radically restructured.

However, the band can confirm the first ever American Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre show with The Godfathers at The Metro in Chicago on Saturday 14th February is still happening. This will be the first American Godfathers show in nearly 20 years with the classic, original line up of Peter Coyne, Chris Coyne, Kris Dollimore, Mike Gibson and George Mazur. This will also be the first ever Godfathers Saint Valentine's Day Massacre show outside London since its inception in the notorious London Dungeon in the late eighties. The London Saint Valentine's Day Massacre shows have become legendary events in English rock and roll folklore and The Godfathers are delighted to stage the first American Massacre at The Metro, which was always a favourite venue for the band to play in their early US tours.

Kinda dug Hit By Hit, cept maybe the Cold Turkey cover. LOVED the Angela/Love Is Dead single, but not so much the Birth, School, Work, etc. LP. Vic Maille did really well by unremembered UK hard rock bands in the late 80s. Godfathers, Birdhouse, Screaming Blue Messiahs, etc.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 16 January 2009 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Aw but Birth School Work Death is their A-Bomb.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well, it was 20 years ago, so maybe I'd hear it different now. I literally could not make it all the way through the title track, though I did put When Am I Coming Down on a mix tape once.

I'm pretty sure I saw them in the mid-90s during a comeback attempt? or maybe it was just members in a new band. a buddy of mine was their gtr tech, the only reason I was at the show.

They are goofy, but "Unreal World" is a classic of that time period in my book. Watching the video conjures memories of 120 Minutes. I always loved the way he says "a hungry man is an angry... man". Goofy group in a lot of ways, but the guitar player wrote some cool hooks.

I've been listening to the Sid Presley Experience Anthology which is possibly of unofficial origin. Some brilliant stuff including most of the 6 track album put out by the Unholy Trinity - they guys left behind when the SPE became the Godfathers. That shit is HOT. Best track, apart form the original SPE single tracks is the Unholy Trinity's version of "Bad Boy" (the Beatles number). UK garage rock has never sounded this good.

Listening to their live album, Dope, Rock 'n' Roll & Fucking in the Streets, now. So, so inferior to the Screaming Blue Messiahs. These guys were basically Dr. Feelgood with big '80s drums and a much less interesting guitar player.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but Dr. Feelgood had a great guitar player! So that's high stakes. Anyway, I haven't heard the live album, and I prefer Screaming Blue Messiahs (at least their debut) too, but not by that much. Scott and I discussed the Godfathers earlier this year, starting here:

Rolling Past Expiry Hard Rock 2010

Also, talked about the Messiahs' second album here, fwiw; it's good, but don't think it's any better than the one Godfathers LP I've heard (which Scott seems to say isn't the best thing they ever did):

comes with dvd of the show as well, but not yet ventured that far as i'm a little concerned re middle age spread ruining my memories of the gang in tight fitting suits.

still, such a great band.

[and yes, mark g, i know re their lyrical limitations - but i care not !]

The concept of the latest Mars Volta album includes a character who is obsessed with the group The Godfathers. I tried to introduce them but it never happened.

Anyway, this is great:

i had heard that re the new mars album but i found the concept somewhat hard to accept

also, thats the one track i "endure" by the godfathers.

ilm folks may hate'em, but the new self released, self produced godfathers album, jukebox fury, is a lot lot better than i would have ever expected in 2013.

of course there are the mark g baiting single line repeated over and over again issues, and the lack of vic maile production tweaks means that there is not the same sonic oomph as with their 'classic' era, but that said, for a bunch of oldies, this is proper full on old school roughed up, attitude heavy r-n-b, which if done by a bunch of youg'uns would have a lot more love from nme et al (hello strypes etc)

and in 2013 thats a lot more than i ever expected.

summary : i still love'em.

mark e, Thursday, 7 March 2013 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

only bell-ends hate the Godfathers.

do i want to hear a new record in 2013 tho? i don't know, probly yes when the mood takes me.

Hmm, I got mentioned a fair bit on a thread I haven't posted on..

Anyways, fear not, I did love this band also (in that lower down region that meant I never bought the records but would enjoy them live)...

But, c'mon, you know me: Wire, obv.

Mark G, Thursday, 29 August 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)

haha ..
well, to be fair, you did mention the lyrical limitations of the band on a few separate threads (i was probably the only f*cker who noticed !)
that said, i aint denying such accusations ..
in fact, its part of the bands charm.
hit a slogan, hit a riff, and lets go ..

mark e, Thursday, 29 August 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)

A few? Looks like I missed one.

Not complaining, it's nice to be remembered for something I actually said,
