i don't even know what that means. i usually just skim press releases that i get wirh CDs, but every once in a while something sticks out. usually something dumb. anyway, this knowledge was dropped on me from a very great height with the new album by *Grayskul*. when people write stuff like that it makes me not want to listen to whatever they want me to listen to.
"Back as their alter-egos Count Draven and Count Magnus, Grayskul provides a conceptual masperpiece; reverse brainwash music for today's contemporary hip-hop fans, typically force-fed imaginary genres."
fuck a guidance counselor.

I got lost at "reverse brainwash music", but should have gotten lost at around "alter-egos".
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)
I take it that by "imaginary genres", they mean the various "regional rap" sub-genres that occasionally poke their noses through to the mainstream, which are basically what are driving the rap creativity arms race at this point, so unless I'm grossly misreading what Grayskul are saying, fuck 'em.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)
"today's contemporary"?
― max, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Take note: if you name your band for a particularly lame line of children's toys, you do not have the right to trash talk anyone about anything.
I mean, shit, even "Micranots" was better.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not 100% sure, but I think Grayskul are from Seattle. If so, their attitude perfectly typifies what passes for our rap scene.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)
And what do you know, they are.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe you can't blame these guys for their press release, but surely to God all this "campaign for real Hip Hop" bullshit is dead by now?
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)
BWAHAHAHA! No, not at all.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)
The Reverend: exorcising the ghosts of REAL hip-hop since 1998. (Or do I have that wrong?)
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)
Actually, Rev, we need to invent YOUR imaginary genre.
Micranot were pretty great.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)
I sometimes feel "force-fed imaginary genres" by ILM's dance music contingent, by regional hip hop not so much.

TBF I was woken up in the middle of the night last week by a dude with a funnel and a big barrel full of Hyphy.

"All rap...all soft stuff."
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
> Micranot were pretty great.
If you say so - I barely remember them. I was just talking about the name.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
So let's see ...
regional rap = imaginary genres alter-egos Count Draven and Count Magnus = keeping it real
If I find that confusing does that makes me yesterday's contemporary hiphop fan
― dad a, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
i listened to their myspace. it's not great, okay i guess. it sounds kinda like goth rap indie dudes doing their version of commercial type beats.
