"Let's Make the Fat Kid Dance then Laugh at Him."

This is Nitsuh's chilling description of the attitude of some Wesley Willis fans, but somehow it struck me as much more than that. Sometimes all entertainment seems like a game of Let's Make the Fat Kid Dance then Laugh At Him. That we want all our artists to be crucified by their own freakiness, there-but-for-the-grace-of-god-go-I court jesters who we expect to be nuts or drink or drug themselves into oblivian.

But maybe that's too afraid of craziness. Can't the Fat Kid like to dance, even if some assholes are laughing at him? and who makes the Fat Kid dance anyway?

"we're not laughing at you, we're laughing with you."

"but I'm not laughing."

1. are celebrities actually more nuts, more addicted self-destructos etc. per capita than average joes or do we just hear about them more because you and I don't make into People magazine when we puke on our shoes?

fritz, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want my celebrities to be boring, and the musician ones to be pathologically shy workaholics.

2. Is the adoration of people who don't know you bad for your brain?

fritz, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

come on now fat boy bust a move!

bc, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you mean that, Tom? Isn't that part of the fun of getting into all the NME hype bands, the outrageous personalities & antics?

Mark, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I make a band, it's going to be called Let's Make the Fat Kid Dance Then Laugh at Him.

Ally, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the semantics of the phrase "make a band". MTV --> people's BRAINZ.

Everybody's a fat kid, not everybody can dance good or even poorly tho

NME hype bands, the outrageous personalities

Problem is with the NME hype bands is they seem to think having outrageous personality = saying we're going to be the biggest band evah and everyone else sucks = just as boring a cliche as the 'if anyone else likes it it's a bonus crew'.

Yeah I do mean it pretty much. It's not that I actively want musicians to be boring, it's just that the range of 'interesting' personalities we're offered is so limited and mostly so worn-out - and it's not helped by interviewers who want to get a soundbite or two rather than help in the contruction of an original pop personality. I love bands who present an image and attitude but that's not contradictory - it's just like going to a fashion show and being into the clothes not the models. There are very few current acts which match great music and image with an interesting personality or group dynamic - this is part of why ILM and other critical places roll over so much for Outkast or the White Stripes (though the White Stripes don't make great music).

I danced. Laugha at me, bitch

Chupa-Cabras, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the white stripes aren't nearly fat enough.
