My neighbors complained when I was smoking spliffs and repeatedly blasting the Duckula theme.

deej, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not really sure how to make this better. maybe i'll just turn down the subwoofer? i'm certainly not stopping listening to music @ night

deej, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it'd be the nocturnal bass that is emerging from your subterranean lair that would be the main irritant I'd guess.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

The only time I got a letter from the council or whoever was years ago when a next door neighbour complained. The only album I played on the night in question was 'And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out' by Yo La Tengo, which is near-impossible to make 'loud'

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 20 September 2007 08:02 (eighteen years ago)

When I lived in my first post-college apartment someone called the management company and/or cops on me at least twice a week. Never found out who it was, but it got to the point that I had to listen to all of my music on headphones and sit a few feet away from my television so I could hear it. It got to be pretty ridiculous. Each time the cops came over they were dumbfounded as to why they were called since they couldn't hear any music from outside or the common area. The management company started threatening to evict me, but I think even they eventually realized it was some cranky/hyper-sensitive person since it was always anonymous.

s1ocki, Thursday, 20 September 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ Oilyrags

Practically every apartment I've ever had has been on the 3rd or 2nd floor, and two apartments ago the family below me was really passive aggressively bitchy about the noise and left notes on my door. I felt bad about it and tried to be conscientious about listening to music after 9 or 10pm, and still got notes or banging on the ceiling now and again. Then, after I'd tried really hard to be quiet for like a year, my ex-roommate came to stay for a couple days, and was playing Doom or some other computer game all night at insane volumes after I kept telling him to turn it down. And the neighbors, who of course didn't know I had a guest and just assumed I was being a jackass, called the fucking cops on us.

My last apartment was awesome, the room where I kept the stereo was directly over a garage so noone could hear me. My new place is over another apt. again, no idea yet if they can hear my music or care, guess time will tell.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I have no great desire to play the tightass little old lady scold here, but I know I've suffered some hearing loss from stupidly loud listening habits, and I've blown out a few woofer cones in my time. Now, at 38, I don't exactly regret those excesses of youth, but I do miss being able to pick out a moderately spoken conversation in a loud room, and one of the main reasons I seldom see live music anymore is that high volume becomes pain rather than pleasure.

Also, I've had housemates and neighbors drive me crazy with their insistence on cranking tunes when I'm trying to sleep. It really does suck. Obviously, if you've got company earphones aren't an option, and almost all music sounds better when it has room to move through the air anyway. Even so, it's more important to be a considerate neighbor than it is to hear and feel that bmmmmph bmmmmph at 1:30 in the morning.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

I bet I'm going to get a noise complaint within two weeks, between drumming on the practice pad and normal tv/music playing. I'm on the second floor and left my tv on when I went to do laundry, and in the first floor hallway I could pick out the dialogue. :(

Jordan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

If there are several tenants in 1G, it's almost certain that these hours were arrived at by only one, so DIVIDE AND CONQUER.

Most likely than not you signed a lease saying that you aren't permitted to listen to music at night if it's disturbing other tenants. But yeah, generally the bass is the big issue rather than overall volume.

I hate people who are inconsiderate with their stereos.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

Clearly, you need to ask them to let you into their place (if they don't mind) so you can hear what they hear when you're playing your music!

David R., Tuesday, 15 April 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

my upstairs neighbor actually did that about two weeks ago; it was friday evening at 7:30pm and i had my stereo absolutely CRANKED - she came downstairs, knocked on my door (for like the 10th time in as many weeks - NB i never listen to music loud after 10pm) and had this look of shock and disgust on her face and asked me if i wanted to come upstairs. i did; she was alone in the house, watching tv by herself. i could BARELY HEAR the fucking music. it was just a low rumbly noise. i looked at her like she was insane.

Theres your answer for getting with the girl, deej!

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

i lived one place where the woman downstairs was working on a masters thesis or something and expected the entire house (which had 11 apartments) to be library-quiet all day and night. she used to go nuts with the broomstick banging on her ceiling/our floor when we played "all things considered" at normal radio-listening volume at 5 p.m. i complained to the super about her, and the super was just kinda like "yeah, she's crazy, sorry."

that said, i have also been the call-the-cops guy on another downstairs neighbor, who worked late shift at a restaurant and would bring his restaurant buddies home to drink and blast the stereo at 3 a.m. (NB i only called the cops after repeatedly knocking on his stupid door and getting no response.) my only expectation on either side of this divide is a certain amount of reasonableness and courtesy.

autechre karaoke would be sweet.

Creeztophair, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

I'm of the opinion that if you decided to live in an apartment, you've forfeited your right to not be subjected to unwanted noise before 10pm on weekdays and before, say, 1am on weekends. Obv if someone is CONSTANTLY bumping some obnoxious music, they deserve to be shot.
