Oooooooh, a toughie!

Tom D., Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I used to think it was "Livin' Thing." But nowadays, I'll take "Sweet Talkin' Woman" for the disco break from 3:12 - 3:16. Please, Beardo (or edit or whoever) folk - extend those four seconds into forever for us. Thanx!

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I can't get "Can't Get It Out of My Head" out of my head

Tom D., Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Sweet Talkin' Woman

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't "Birmingham Blues" a single?

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Not according to wikipedia, which is where I got the list from. May be wrong of course.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Blue Sky but really I wanted to vote for Four Little Diamonds

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Turn to Stone" is my ELO jam. Hear it on the radio every now and again.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Shine A Little Love and Last Train to London are pretty amazing.

Romeo Jones, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit .... I'M A-LIVE is getting my vote

Romeo Jones, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

"Livin' Thing"

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "Wild West Hero". "Mr. Blue Sky" is the runner-up.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Just listened to "On The Third Day" today btw. Their version of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" is amazing. One of the best classical music adaptions ever!

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

"EEEEEeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeeeVIL woman"

snoball, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Don't bring me dow-how-own–BBBBBBBBBBBBBBbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbROOSE!

Abbott, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea 10538 Overture was ever a single. Was this just in the UK?

Abbott, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Strange Magic for me, but I'm sure I'll love whatever wins

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Four Little Diamonds" is their best song, even if it is a complete ripoff of "Don't Bring Me Down."

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Although my all-time fave is prob. "Mr Blue Sky," I know in my heart that "Evil Woman" is a better song. Thus, my vote.

Davey D, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

you're looking good just like a snake in the grass

The Good Dr. Bill, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Secret Messages might not be the best song on here, but it just might have the best video:

"Four Little Diamonds" is their best song, even if it is a complete ripoff of "Don't Bring Me Down."

I don't agree. And I don't mean with it not being their best song (it isn't either), but with the similarities between the two of them. If there is a ripoff of "Don't Bring Me Down", then "Hold On Tight" is it. Both are 50s rock'n'roll pastiches, while "Don't Bring Me Down" (which even starts with a shout to a "Paul" in an obvious scouser accent) sounds more like early an Beatles effort.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

They really were pretty much flawless up to Xanadu, but Turn to Stone gets the nod.

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

It was downhill after 10538, basically!

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

Mr Blue Sky is my favourite but I suspect that'll get enough love so I voted for ... Rockaria!

"I thought I saw the mayor there but I wasnt really sure".

Jeff W, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Certainly uphill after 10538. Their first two albums remained their two worst until 1983.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Don't Bring Me Down

PhilK, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

this is too difficult. 'sweet talking woman' or 'living thing' are the obvious choices, but their ballads are SO good, 'strange magic' or 'telephone line' could easily win too.

stevie, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

Mark G basically OTM, but ELO was still v. awesome and this wasn't an easy decision.

I do want to rep for "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" tho

will, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

'ma ma belle' kicks ass

stevie, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, give you that one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

man who knew they had so many singles?

mitya, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

i chose 'strange magic'. i m softee.

stevie, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite ELO song is actually the Jeff Lynne vocal version of "Xanadu" - it is heartbreaking! I voted "Sweet Talkin' Woman" but I could have easily picked 5 others.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I should probably know this, but where is the Jeff Lynne vocal version of Xanadu available? I've never heard it.

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's on a best of from like '98. Not sure which one.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 27 September 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Boo! No ONJ = No Xanadu!

SeekAltRoute, Thursday, 27 September 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Wrong winner anyway. "Don't Bring Me Down" is a rather ordinary 50s rock pastiche, only with a bit of synths and a modern drum sound added.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 27 September 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

It was bruce wot won it.

"Turn to stone" is amazingly high up there!

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2007 08:09 (eighteen years ago)

'ang on!

"Do Ya" was a Move single!

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

'ang on!

"Do Ya" was a Move single!

It was an ELO single too, although only in the US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Ya

In the end I went for Rockaria!. For the fluffed intro, the bluesy guitar assault at the start, the accapella bridge in the middle and the instruments fading back in leading to the 'far, far away' refrain before it all tumbles down in that joyfully Dylanesque ending.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 27 September 2007 09:25 (eighteen years ago)

insane; this is like 'do it again' winning a beach boys single poll!

stevie, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't agree. And I don't mean with it not being their best song (it isn't either), but with the similarities between the two of them. Geir, wtf? The ONLY similarity "Hold On Tight" has with "Don't Bring Me Down" is the big drumbeat. I can hear the Beatles but DBMD isn't even a fifties pastiche, where HOT is way Jerry Lee'd out, particularly at the outset. If anything, the similarities are between HOT and "Four Little Diamonds," both of which are classic.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. And I now noticed I did a typo. "Four Little Diamonds" is the one song that sounds to me like The Beatles, starting with that quote even.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 1 October 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

You want an ELO megamix? Here it is.

Apart from a really clunky edit at 3'43 and 4'22 it works far better than it has any right to.

Billy Dods, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Woohoo! My love of "Bruce!" put it over the top.
