It's true, a dude can get a lot done on ye olde trap kit, but are we ever going to stop taking it for granted? I guess I wish more Western bands would experiment more with percussion arrangements or multiple drummers.

trad kit w/ personal touches and modifications is ultimately what I feel most comfortable playing, but I definitely want to mess with more creative or experimental percussion ideas.

What were those toys called that were drum sticks that made an electronic snare drum noise when you waved them in the air? Hot Stix or something? They came in pink?

Rock n' roll is made with a standard kit, just like chocolate pudding is made with chocolate pudding mix. If you make it with anything else, it's something different.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be all Louis "why isn't the world living up to my crrrrrazy creative ideas" Jagger here, but I like it when shit gets treated a little more percussionistically (which is maybe a little weird, b/c I'm a drummer and I don't really do hand or classical percussion). And when you really think about it, the modern drum kit is kind of a weird thing to have become so standardized (playing bass drum with your foot, making some cymbals open and close over here, etc.).

Jordan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not discounting at all the benefits of other kinds of percussion, just saying that rock music which is the predominant style throughout western culture sort of necessitates the continued use of a basic drum kit.

I had those drum stick thingees! Might still have them, actually. They sucked hard.
Drum kit is classic AND played out. I think a) more "western" artists should incorporate at least a motherfucking bongo or djembe more often and b) why more non-western bands should use trap kits more often. Cause a sitar and thumb piano over a filthy breakbeat is awesome.

Jordan, is this what you mean?

yeah, but see, that's what I like about it, it is kind of ridiculous-looking, like those one-man-band set ups where every limb is connected to an instrument. the hi-hat is my single favorite thing about drumming. usually it seems like the foot pedals are the hardest thing for non-drummers to figure out, even if they have a good sense or rhythm to begin with.

Hit Stix is succeeded by Hit Stix 2, which incorporates sound selection via sliders on each drum stick. The left stick adjusts the tone while the right selects either snare, tom, bass drum or phaser.

Jordan, Friday, 21 September 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

The standard drum kit doesn't need fixing because it does most things fairly well.

It lets you produce a low thumping sound, a punchy crack and hi-pitche ticks that cut through everything.

That's all you need.

mei, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

The contemporary drum kit is basically a crystallization of the more *creative* percussion kits of old, is it not?

Hurting 2, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I had Hit Stix, they were terrible. I had the first edition, which only made one sound, so everything you played was like "TCHK TCHK TCHK ... TCHK TCHK."

I don't think drum kit is played out, tho over the last several years, have seen a move towards the simplest set up possible. bands w/pretty amazing drummer, who in years past might have had big, flashy kits, are now just going w/snare, hi-hat, kick, maybe one cymbal, maybe one tom -- but often bare basics is enough them.

in any case, actual playing of drum sets doesn't seem to be going anywhere. in fact, I was talking with a drummer friend yesterday about how growing up hearing aphex twin, autechre and squarepusher records has produced a lot of insane drummer kids who play that stuff w/out a hint of gimmick or "hey look at me I'm playing electronic beats on drumset" irony.

Dominique, Friday, 21 September 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

have you been recording real drms for your project?
