NEW ALBUM IS REALLY GOOD
― chaki, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
Go Into the Water is awesome - I'd love to Mastodon cover it. The rest is meh. I found myself hitting >> about a minute into each song.
I hate how just because it's a novelty album, they have to crank the vox up loud in the mix - so you can hear the "funny" lyrics, I guess. But the vox are whispered so it kills any illusion of heaviness.

It really clicked for me the fifth or sixth time through. Before that, I was underwhelmed. But after that, totally awesome. Now I just need a copy without the stupid voiceover.

Hey!
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)
They play tomorrow for free at UCLA... but you can only get in if you're a UCLA student. Apparently even the animators are having a tough time getting in.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
oh that sucks. the uc berkeley show is open for all. sorry ned thank you for contributing to this dying thread for the greatest band in the world.
― chaki, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)
THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME.
a couple of people i've played it for have whined about the funny lyric thing, and my response has been "dude, have you ever sat down and read a Dio/King Diamond/nameyourfavoriteband lyric sheet?"
― John Justen, Friday, 9 November 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I was really surprised when this album turned out to be far better than I'd ever expected. The songs were cool in short form on the show, but now that they've been expanded and polished a bit, it's even more impressive. Funny how kids talk about how "brutal" this album is, when it's actually pretty tame musically. Bu Small definitely exhibits some chops...dude knows his metal.

The Easter eggs on the DVD are awesome, including 15 minutes of Nathan Explosion reading Shakespeare. Brilliant stuff. My really jokey, really short review of the album for a local free weekly is here:

uh yah ill avoid reading that.

SCREW YOU DILDO
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)
OK, I'll admit that that doesn't make it sound too appealing, but when you only have 150 words, there isn't a ton you can say beyond just trying to make people laugh. I'm working on a longer, more in-depth and less jokey review for a website.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)
the xtras on the dvd are tits though. i posted one (and a DECENT article / interview) upthread.
xpost oh i didnt know you wrote it dude. im sorry. i was dissin campus circle.
― chaki, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)
that review was not bad at all! i totally read it!
― chaki, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)
Ha, thanks.
They gave me my start, and have been very cool to me, so it would be impolite for me to say anything mean about them. That said, it's really freaking hard to write a review with any sort of meat whatsoever in 150 words. I'm also reviewing the DVD for them, mostly because, hey, free DVD! I'll post the link to my longer review when it goes up.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)
Did you write the interview you posted above?
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)
i write everything
― chaki, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)
I hadn't bothered to search for all the hidden bits on the DVD, but it looks like I have to now. Sounds cool.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
The hidden bits are pretty easy to find -- just press up on the title screen of both discs, and you'll see parts of the logo highlighted in red. Each of those is a special feature. Also, in the "show episodes" section of the second disc (but not the first), there are five hidden things off to the side if you press right or left as you scroll down the menu.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)
yah the interviews hidden on disc 2 are funnier than alot of the episodes
― chaki, Friday, 9 November 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
My friend tried to sell me on this. Did nothing for me. I am not metal.
― The Reverend, Friday, 9 November 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)
Just emo.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)
Well there you go.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 10 November 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)
Show's awesome, album sucks. The vocals suck, even for death metal standards.
― Reatards Unite, Saturday, 10 November 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)
i like em

METAL TO FALSE DEATH
― Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 11 November 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)
Man, this album is awesome. Listening to the bonus disc right now. "Kill You" has the best lyrics since "Used to Love Her."
― Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 11 November 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)
"Lost Vikings" is my personal fave. The fact that they're not metaphorically lost but literally lost is such a goofy joke, but I can't helps but laughs.
Those DVD extras are all really well done. The Skwisgaar video shoot is hilarious.
― A. Begrand, Sunday, 11 November 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)
Good lord--this thread is almost making me want to get this!
― JN$OT, Sunday, 11 November 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)
Almost?! If I didn't already have it, this thread would make me want to run to the store and pick it up right now! Which is what you should do. And get the deluxe edition, the bonus disc has some great stuff on it.
― Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 11 November 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)
Great show - I'm wondering if this album isn't going to be a gateway into "real" metal for a lot of people.
― Tantrum The Cat, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)
It did debut at number 21 on the Billboard chart, so I would imagine so. And I can think of worse places to start.
― Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 11 November 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)
Haha--just heard this for the first time (by somewhat less than legit mean, I should note). I gotta say I liked it quite a bit--in spite of the fact that I'm not much of a death metal head (to say the least). Oh, man--the ZZ Top blues imitation was way cool and made me laugh out loud; more like this--and "Kill You," too--pleaze!
BTW, where does J0hn D stand on this one?
― JN$OT, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)
oh shit, dethklok played in town last night and i didn't even know about it! :/

― Nate Carson, Saturday, 26 September 2009 01:22 (sixteen years ago)
I'll be seeing them as dual headliners with Mastodon in November.
I'm mostly going to the show to see Mastodon and don't really know what to expect from Dethklok. I really like Metalocalypse, but I think sometimes the music is the weakest part of the show.
So what's the deal? Is Dethklok live funny? Do they rock? Or are they just a second-rate metal immitation?
― Moodles, Saturday, 26 September 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)
They play in the shadows beneath a big monitor with the virtual band performing and delivering all the dialog. It's pretty funny.
Mastodon live--I'm totally over it. Make sure you arrive early as the openers are stellar.
― Nate Carson, Saturday, 26 September 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)
And yes, they do rock. It's melodic death metal played by pros.
I've heard a couple songs and they were fucking awesome
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 26 September 2009 02:17 (sixteen years ago)
Couple songs off the new album, that is.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 26 September 2009 02:18 (sixteen years ago)
San Jose? Bah, foiled again. Mr Veg wants to see them, we missed the last tour. He'll be excited that there's a new album.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 26 September 2009 02:25 (sixteen years ago)
