Hello
I am dj'ing a school dance in a few weeks. The kids will be between 16-18 and I've been told there will be booze.
What do I play? I have some idea's but in general I just don't know what they're all listening to right now. What are the older (and with these kids, that probably refers to pre 2000) songs I can play? Do they know Groove is in the Heart or Prince or even Music Sounds Better with You? I've been told that they would like some trance as well as the popular favourites.
Thanks very very much

A 12-hour nu-grave set should suffice.

Woop, that went a bit wrong. That's the soundtrack from Skins, so careful not to belittle anyone. Hahaha.

Be sure to play the kind of music that's discussed at length on ILM.

I wasn't aware any kids listened to trance nowadays? Maybe then mean nu-metal trancecore e.g Enter Shikari

Indeed. The erection section is due for about 10.20.
― Matt DC, Friday, 21 September 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)
why don't you ask the audience? when i played a mate's daughter's prom a couple of years ago i primed myself by asking the kids to fill in a short questionnaire about their taste in music. it was extremely illuminating (although they were like 12 not 16-18).
― CharlieNo4, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)
can't they just get 16-18yr olds to DJ at these things?
there should be an ILX Junior board

Is this a group of US 16 to 18 year olds? Cause if so, you betta have a whole lotta Soulja Boy, Sean Kingston, Rihanna, Rich Boy, Akon, Justin Timberlake/Nelly Furtado/Timbaland-y stuff, Shop Boyz, Fall Out Boy, Fergie, T-Pain, T-Pain, and T-Pain. Although the fact that they might even have a remote clue what trance is suggest this is not a group of US youngsters. Surely at least a bit of the above list would apply for you too, though.

i think djing for a bunch of drunken underage kids would also be considered a bit suspect in the states ... what strange nation is this kind of thing not frowned upon?
― deej, Friday, 21 September 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
matt2 OTM
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 21 September 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)
xpost - yea I was wondering that too, it's a school dance and alcohol will be served? for the kids or for the dj/chaperones/etc?
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)
older stuff, even if you and i know it's really good (e.g. Prince) probably won't really resonate with kids that age
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah the oldest you could go ("I remember this from elementary school") is N'Sync or Destiny's Child (cause JT and Beyonce are still so prominent) and maybe some Nelly or Jay-Z or something. I dj at a college radio station (clarification: I'm 29 but if you were a dj there as a student, you are allowed to continue to dj there kinda like a community radio station. I ain't tryin' to hang with the college kiddies past my time you dirty minds, about 1/3 to 1/2 of our regular dj staff are as old or older than me anyway). Anyway, back to the point, I was asked to dj our annual 80's Dance (yes even current college kids are still strangely fascinated with dressing like Madonna and MJ) as an actual relic of the era last fall. Now the current college students who dj at the station are presumably "music fanatics" but I was appalled at the music they didn't know. To them, the ONLY Prince song that ever mattered was "When Doves Cry" (I was literally asked not to play anything else by him. I wasn't digging deep either, just wanted to pay "I Would Die 4 U" ) and Depeche Mode, Yaz, Gap Band, Cameo, Kool and the Gang, Shannon, etc pretty much do not exist in their minds ("I've never heard any of this. Don't play it"). And these folks were 19 to 21 years old. So, so bizarre. My points being, Mark Clemente OTM and it's incredible how quickly we all become relics.

we had a karaoke night in sixth form one time and the teachers let us bring beer in which was great.
― blueski, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)
A lot of them are probably into My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco, but I realise those are hardly dancefloor killers.
― Geir Hongro, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)
Justin and Justice.
― Spencer Chow, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)
I did the same thing a year ago (also kids aged 16-18; some of the girls were slightly indie-y, as you can tell from the list), and luckily I still have the e-mail:
Songs we like:
Junior Senior – Shake your coconuts Har Mar Superstar - DUI Foo Fighters Franz Ferdinand The Streets Scissor Sisters Strokes Robyn – konichiwa bitches Hi tack - say say say
Songs we like from the 90s:
Backstreet boys Five Mmmbob, Hanson S club 7 Rednex Vengaboys Scatman Try me out
Songs we like from the 80s:
Madonna Girls just wanna have fun Michael Jackson The Clash Wham The buggles, video killed the radiostar Rivers of babylon The cure
Songs we like from the 70s:
jackson 5 hippy hippy shake Beach Boys Beatles Elvis Aretha Franklin Ramones Knock on wood Boots are made for walking
Songs we are sick of:
Sean Paul Beyonce + destinys child
Also, the list below = disaster. Just so you know. I mean, "Ah Uh Mi Hed"!!! (Great song, though.)
Roots Manuva - Witness The Fitness The Hives - No Pun Intended The Fall - Totally Wired John Martyn - May You Never Shuggie Otis - Ah Uh Mi Hed Broadcast Hammer Without A Master Brian Jonestown Massacre - You Look Great When I'm High
― Jeb, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks for suggestions so far. This is not in the US but in New Zealand - the kids are basically listening to the same things though. Yeah, with the older stuff I don't want to fall into that "I don't know this, I won't dance to it, this sucks" trap... Depeche Mode, Yaz etc... would sadly not go down well.
― randomrules, Saturday, 22 September 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)
They'll flip out if you put on DJ Sammy's "Heaven." MAYBE "One More Time," "Starry Eyed Surprise," or "Days Go By." Otherwise, crank dat soulja boy.
― Tape Store, Saturday, 22 September 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)
oh, in NZ I have no idea. If it were the US rap would be the only way to go.
― Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 22 September 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Rap will be very prevalent but I'm stumped on the trance. They want something with a good beat, I'm guessing it needs to be recent.

Starry Eyed Surprise
SO TRANCE
― Tape Store, Sunday, 23 September 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)
that's a pretty great one and i know for a fact that everyone knows it. any other ones like that, other than the ones you listed prior?
― randomrules, Sunday, 23 September 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

You could definitely play some Fatboy Slim...and this would, too.
Also, this one would probably be a hit.
― Tape Store, Sunday, 23 September 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)
this would work*
― Tape Store, Sunday, 23 September 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)
ok, word is that i need wordless hip dance music, techno/trance kind of stuff. these kids appear to be pretty hip.
― randomrules, Sunday, 23 September 2007 06:58 (eighteen years ago)
Sounds like this could be the way to go. Find more crappy electro house which is everywhere at the moment (in Auckland at any rate, where are you?).

In my experience, if you just play the whole of the Pendulum CD and then go for a pint, you will have made their nights come true.

I hear that My Chemical Romance are "this generation's Nirvana".
― King Boy Pato, Sunday, 23 September 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)
Ice Cube - Put Your Ass Into It ODB - Baby I Got Your Money Blackstreet - No Diggity TLC - Creep R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix)
-These are always standard "retro" hip-hop/R'n'B here
Violent Femmes - Blister in the sun
-I have yet to go to a teen disco that didn't play this song
Fergie, JT, My Chemical Romance, The Killers, Britney, Xtina, Usher, Something from High School Musical.
― I know, right?, Sunday, 23 September 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

I find it funny how the 00s picks are considerably more cutting edge than the 90s ones. It seems like those kids still like what they used to be into as kids, not quite discovering that there was more to the 90s than that. :)
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)
But, if they can still say with a straight face that they do like Rednex, Vengaboys, Corona and Scatman John, they I guess you should go for something similar from the 00s, as that would obviously be more danceable than Foo Fighters or Franz Ferdinand.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)
Surely it's a case that novelty records appeal more to little kids than adults and that the cheesy songs they remember as kids stay with them into adulthood
― the next grozart, Sunday, 23 September 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)
seriously Tricky? wtf i wouldnt even dance to that list and i love some of those artists
i dont know how 'dancey' you mean
if you want dance then just go for remixes of popular songs
Killers - Mr Brightside, When You Were Young (JLC remixes) Fall Out Boy - Dance Dance (Lindbergh Palace Remix) etc.
if you want music kids dance to then just play Killers, FOB, MCR, Rihanna, that Sean Kingston song etc. in there original mixes
Im in Auckland too and I have a 17 yo sister btw
― splates, Monday, 24 September 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)
the only older songs they might get
Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Chronic 2001-era Dre, maybe some Boyz II men for slow jam moments, stuff like that
― splates, Monday, 24 September 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)
splates, what would you say are some other remixes of popular songs that'd work with these kids?
― randomrules, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)
DJ Shyboy - What Goes Around The World (Daft Punk Vs Justin Timberlake) Fall Out Boy - Thnks Fr The Mmrs (Lindbergh Palace Remix) Justin Timberlake - LoveStoned (Kaskade Remix) Rihanna - Dont Stop The Music (Wideboys Club Mix) Killers - Read My Mind (Pet Shop Boys Stars Are Blazing Mix) Mason Vs Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) Sneaky Sound System - Pictures (Tonite Only Remix) Rihanna - Umbrella (Jody Den Broeder Lush Mix) Timbaland - The Way I Are (Axwell Remix), (Icons Club Mix)
theyll go down alright, but i suspect youll be better off just playing them 'smells like teen spirit' or something
― splates, Monday, 24 September 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)
theres a mashup of Nelly Furtado's Say It Right with 'Children' thats hilariously cheesy but surprisingly fun floating around too
