They much cop?
There's one on 50 Skidillion Watts, which I had previously thought to be Jad Fair's label, when in fact, it seems it was run by Penn Jillette, of Penn & Teller fame! Crazy!

there's one called i think "i stayed a week there the other night" that is pretty good, though i haven't heard it in a long time -- guest stars galore! all of the velvets, sonic youth people and a bunch of others. my favorite thing on there is her ultra slow version of waiting for the man ... what is moe up to these days anyway? retired?
― tylerw, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, i have i stayed a week, it's really good. i also have a great promo compilation called hot gig-gettin' numbers (which i guess she used to solicit gigs) that has stuff from the solo albums plus her version of "be my baby" and a few odds and ends. don't know what she's doing now, her website hasn't been updated in 5 years. i saw her play in 1999 or 2000, she was fantastic. ended with a 10-minute plus version of "bo diddley" that is one of the greatest things i have ever seen/heard.
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
Life In Exile After Abdication is pretty good. Great version of Goodnight Irene.
― hugo, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
i saw her play drums behind some kinda lame band in LA way back in 96 or 97. a weird show, to say the least. probably about 20 people there, most of whom i can only assume were there to see Moe play the drums ... for a not very good alt-rock band. But yeah, the best part was where she came out from behind the kit and sang and played noisy guitar on "Bo Diddley." She hung around afterwards and was super-nice.
― tylerw, Monday, 24 September 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
The one with "Hey Mersh" is classic, haven't heard the others. I saw her tour that album with Half Japanese, what a double bill.
― sleeve, Monday, 24 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
Magnet, tyler?
― Mr. Hal Jam, Monday, 24 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
yeah! honestly, maybe they were OK, I really have no recollection ...

The nicest famous person I ever met. But you know that, right?
― Mark G, Monday, 24 September 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)
I saw her tour that album with Half Japanese, what a double bill.
Saw that one too, great show. Years later, I realized that Sonny Vincent was in that edition of Half Japanese.
― bendy, Monday, 24 September 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, saw that tour as well. They went to the Powerhaus in ~Maida Vale. Thought that might be my only chance.
Until she came back with Sterling in the band, and went and played Reading Uni.
Well, it would have been rude not to!
― Mark G, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)
Half Japanese played Reading Uni??? When was that?
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 08:19 (eighteen years ago)
Or Moe Tucker solo? Either way, WTF!
No, not the halfjaps, that was the Moe/Sterling band.
That was the time we all got to meet Moe and Sterling after the gig. I got my gig ticket signed, others had thought about it and brought in their VUBanana lp sleeves...
When? Blimey oreilly. Aroud the time of "I spent a week there the other night".
― Mark G, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)
AMG sez that was 1991. Ah well, I was there 94-97 (and lived there after uni til 2001).
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)
Sounds about right.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)
I have Life In Exile After Abdication on CD, which has an EP she did with Jad Fair tacked on as bonus tracks with a great version of Guess I'm Falling In Love (Jad singing).
I Spent A Week and Dogs Under Stress are worth getting too. I've never been able to find her earlier 80s stuff.
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)
Her "Playin' Possum" album is awesome. Reminds me of the Shaggs and Moldy Peaches.
― nicegeoff, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)
Life In Exile After Abdication is a seriously excellent album. For sheer intensity and wit, "Hey Mersh!" and "Spam Again" kick Lou's ass from here to Thursday.

Found Playing Possum at the community station last night. I found Life in Exile months ago but didn't see Playin, I didn't think we had it. The version of "Round and Round" on Playin Possum is my absolute favorite. Oh shit! her version of Heroin totally rules, too.
― Trip Maker, Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, i think the argument could be made that Life In Exile is more Velvet-y than anything Cale or Reed did in their solo careers. Maybe after this NYC talk they're giving next week, Moe, Lou and Doug will get a band together.

Sundazed has benefited greatly from the vinyl revival. Plus they cater to an audience that still buys physical copies of stuff.

So very fucking cool, thanks! Here's still hoping she does her own book. Anybody heard that Sundazed boxette?
― dow, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:51 (twelve years ago)
haha, yeah the stuff about her and warhol is fantastic. it would be great if she wrote a book or something. in a band full of unlikely stuff, her story might be the most unlikely of all. still need to get that sundazed anthology though.
― tylerw, Thursday, 23 January 2014 02:49 (twelve years ago)
i'm listening to Abdication for the first time and it sounds so far ahead of its time, even with "Chase" which is basically a SY track ca. Bad Moon Rising
― shoot skag listen to sotl (rip van wanko), Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)
yeah, i love all these albums but even though VU is so crazy well known and investigated by trainspotters, her solo albums seem to be mostly off the radar
