Kind of the opposite to this thread... 100 great unaccompanied songs
Some days I think this could be applied to every song ever.

Anything by Tool. I can't stand Maynard's voice; I'd be a big fan of the band if I could just filter out his awful vocals.

G-Funk to thread!!!!!!!

(provided no one rapping either)
I heard a jazzy version of God Only Knows that lacked nothing the other day.. it was lovely.

i'm not sure this would actually work, 'cause i love the song as is, but a good example of this might be rem's "star me kitten," in which the vocal line apes the lead guitar line nearly note for note.

i listen to the instrumental version of the last UNKLE album a lot more than the proper version with all those guest vocalists. does that count ?

any of joanna newsom's songs, i guess.

everything by the smiths. a smiths in dub album is a long held fantasy of mine which i might make myself one day. i've already made myself an instrumental version of 'how soon is now'.

I think so, I listen to the instrumental version of Dr. Octagoncologyst more than the original even though when it came out I thought it was...er...the future of rap or something.

Radiohead

Yoko Ono's "Why." I'd love to hear an instrumental version of that.

Pretty much everything I've heard by Turzi.
Strategy's Future Rock would be 100x better without them. Everything on the new Deadbeat.

Most Björk songs have some magnificent standalone electronica backing tracks that would work better on their own, as her songs don't tend to fit with the arrangements behind.

everything by the smiths. a smiths in dub album is a long held fantasy of mine which i might make myself one day.
I felt that way right up until grade 11, when I realized that the vocals are crucial.

Might be a little out of left-field but I admire Timbaland as a producer but of the billion or so tracks he produces a year about half I prefer as instrumentals.
― Anthony Walsh, Thursday, 27 September 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)
Calvin Harris' "The Girls" is a great instrumental track. I'm sure there's a dub version somewhere but I've never been able to find it.

"Short Shorts" by the Royal Teens. Once you erase the silly vocals, it's like a great lost Link Wray track.
― Rev. Hoodoo, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)
King Crimson. A lot of Sonic Youth.

sorry guys, Bardo Pond is all about the (non-vocal) music.

Just got Communication by Karl Bartos and it is completely ruined by cruddy robot voices throughout. One or two tracks would have been ok but every single track - the same rubbish dr roboto voice. Arrgh.
― Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 29 September 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
Each and every released studio release from AC/DC should be accompanied with a sans-vocals edition. I don't despise the music, but i'd never turn a backwards glance to those cat-choking-on-a-coughed-up-hairball voices ever again.

Bon Scott sounded OK IMO.

BAN VIOLINCELLOS
― M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
of their two leadsmen, i prefer the sounds made by Ronald over those generated by Brian. I just genuinely hold the opinion that the backing tracks outshine the output of either and would like to hold the option of hear what the tracks sound like scrubbed of the overlying vociferating.
― violoncellos, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)
alter that to:
to hold the option of being able to hear what the tracks sound like scrubbed of the overlying vociferating.
