Ten Years Gone

Someone explain Ten Years Gone to me, please. I see it cited variously as the highlight of Physical Graffiti, as *the* Zep classic, and occasionally as the most beautiful song of all time. But to me it's an unnecessary mix of Rain Song noodling (my least favourite Zep mode), Plant at his blandest, and too much repetition, with Dear Prudence draped all over it. I can see that it's nice enough, but what am I missing?

its about remembering lost love. i don't know, i love the melody, the words, and the slow build to the crescendo-esque final chorus, all the multi-tracked harmonies and ever-rising sad guitars.

lost first love, as plant clarifies on some bootleg i have somewhere. i think there's something very vulnerably, very happy-sad nostalgic about it, whimsical but heavy too somehow. i think i prefer it to 'rain song', but would never want to choose between the two.

three years pass...

the verse into the solo into the bridge is one of the best moments into their catalog.

Just posted that on the other thread. Indeed.

the post-bridge solo I don't like as much as the pre-bridge solo.

Yeah, get that. It is more a guitar-symphony Pageism, not a real solo. Pretty, but as essential, just works for me really well leading into the pause and the monumental return to the verse riff.

That was meant to say "not as essential" as the actual pre-bridge solo.

A rare, very direct and unambiguous Plant lyric. No arcane references to bustles in hedgerows or Tolkien or tarot decks. Just an elegy to a lost first love from ten years earlier.
