oh yes. even better (worse?) was "whose law is it anyway?", otherwise known as the VVMCPS Abolish Copyright Anthem...

I did have the Infinity 7", I imagine it got sold to some crappy 2ndhand record store during one of the great "must sell records to eat" selloffs circa '92-'93

Minna, you must show caution! Some of these songs could KILL you. ;-)

His '1990's, time for the guru' was a blessed release for all of us wondering who to follow once 'voice of the eighties' Julia Fordham was out of time. Was often referred to as 'the raving dentist'

Believe it or not, but that song was what posessed me to buy my first CD. A pop compilation titled 'Hot Or What', track listing follows:

  1. "How Can We Be Lovers", Michael Bolton (oh god)
  2. "I Don't Know Anybody Else", Black Box
  3. "Walk On The Wild Side", Jamie J. Morgan
  4. "Mona", Craig McLachlan and Check 1-2
  5. "Black Betty", Ram Jam
  6. "Blame It On The Rain", Milli Vanilli (!!!)
  7. "Escaping", Margaret Urlich
  8. "I Wish It Would Rain Down", Phil Collins (hahhahahahhah)
  9. "This Beat Is Technotronic", Technotronic
  10. "Shake", Andrew Ridgeley
  11. "Love Is", Alannah Myles
  12. "Roam", B-52's
  13. "Infinity (1990's, Time for the Guru)", Guru Josh (Yeaa!)
  14. "Passion", Bang The Drum
  15. "Love Will Lead You Back", Taylor Dayne (end the terror!)
  16. "I Remeber You", Skid Row
  17. "Dancing In The Storm", Boom Crash Opera

This is probably what convinced me to stop listening to pop music. A pretty good first purchase, I think.

I heard that in the mid 90s John Peel got mad keen on some 'underground' techno bod and played him lots on the show and the listeners got behind uncle John and voted this ravey anthem thing into the festive 50, and then the bloke behind it turned out to be Guru Josh!

Tom, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i just had a leaf through the festive fifties online, and i couldn't see which one that could be. anyone?

gareth, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(Andrew, you'll be happy to know that Bruges is now even worse off. No broken up streets, but an unfinished theatre bldg.)

nathalie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did you like the photos, then?

Andrew, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No alas Gareth it looks like you were right. Another treasured second hand anecdote bites the dust.

Tom, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom = willful spreader of urban legends. ;-)

i used to be friends with his sister. she said he's made nuff money from infinity to set up a studio in berlin, fill it with synths and play around 24/7. there's probably barrowloads of faceless techno on the shelves (and wheels) of the world that is produced by the man himself. infinity sounds wack now, but it did the job in 92. and the music press latched onto it cus the guy had an image (blue sunnys and hippyshit). (hence the speedy development into facelessness...) all in all, i find it less offensive than all the eurodance pap that floods the uk charts every summer. and that not just cus i used to be friends with his sister...

"Infinity" was where my eight-ten year old self and dance music parted ways for a while. After keenly following Technotronic, KLF, Black Box and C & C Music Factory, I remember being confused by "Infinity" and frankly frightened by its attendant video. And saxaphones were uncool even then.

Any truth in what I've been told about Guru Josh's career grinding to halt due to him coming out in support of the Poll Tax?
